How about stop listing off games and talk about why they must be played?

As for me, I havn't a clue why nobody said Syberia.

The envirionments were awesome, and the story as a whole was really engaging and interesting.

Command and Conquer: Red Alert.

It's probably the most "pure fun" RTS game I have ever played, as well has having some of the best production values from its time or ever. Despite how old it is, I can heartily recommend this game to anyone and know they will be impressed and enjoy it.

laikenf I gotta agree. First example of Zelda direct sequelage (thx Yahtzee) with the trippiest storyline of any of them. Never finished it unfortunatly. N64 broke down.
I'm afraid that honor goes to Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.
Also... Zelda's adventure was a direct sequel of Wand of Gamelon (If you'll permit me to blaspheme)
Bugger, did not know that thank you. And you wouldn't be referering to those games made by some third party who managed to get a hold of the license way back when? Damn straight that's blashpheming :)

As for less mainstream games you may not have played, Shadow of the Collosus definatly. Also I would recommend the multiplayer pac-man game for the GC. For the life of me I can't remember what it was called but one player controls pac man on a GB SP and can see the whole map while the other three are ghosts and have to track him. Best. Party. Game. EVER.

Rez. It has to be Rez. Why has no-one else said Rez? I know the Dreamcast wasn't exactly popular, but it's Rez. It just came out on Xbox Live, so there're no excuses. It's the best... What genre is it? Eh. It's better than any music-based game I've ever played, it's better than any on-rails shooter I've ever played... Whatever you want to call it, it's excellent. The best 800 points you'll ever spend.

I'll go with more obscure titles, since I doubt you're using this forum if you don't know that it's a good idea to play GoldenEye:

- Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64)
- Shenmue/Shenmue II (DC/Xbox)
- Panzer Dragoon Orta (Xbox)
- Sid Meier's Pirates! (PC/Xbox)

Dare I say it, I have a suggestion from the past year. Contra 4.

Lots of hardcore gamers criticize the DS for being a "casual" platform. Try Contra 4. That game is HARD, but lots of fun. You just blast everything that moves. And the bosses... FREAKING INSANE. What other game lets you kill a beetle almost as tall as both DS screens, and as wide as 3 of them, while on a hoverbike?

ok my games and reasons,
sid meirs alpha centuria;
what other turn based strategy game lets you stock pile enough super nukes to literally remove a country from the map. oh and you can have your citzens live in a matrix world to keep them from rebelling under your stifling regime.

wonderboy in monsterland;
i can't really explain why i loved it, but boy was it fun fighting that crazy question asking
sphinx.

i'll second baldurs gate and planescape torment;
both are the best roleplaying games out there, i loved mass effect but those classics are still miles better than any more modern roleplaying games...

...and that is not a rose tinted view, they are just that good
DAMN YOU IRENICUS!!!!!!

You hear that? Its my reaction to your list of games so far (except Majora's Mask that game was creepy but in a good way and Kirby's Adventure). You people seemed prone on getting the games that everybody knows about and think is epic. Normally I dont flame games that I havent played, but after playing Bioshock and being bored of it, I'm going back to my old ways. Time to add some freaking variety in this board.

Mega Man Maverick Hunter X
PSP
$20
Remember Mega man? of course not you PC players. This game is a remake of the action classic which premiered on the SNES. In actuality its a freaking remastery. Everything is back, better with new stuff to boot. It even has a new script, story with voice acting thats perfect,a new game mode and an anime movie to boot. Most importantly its SIMPLE and FUN! Anyone with a PSP has no excuse not to get this game(except knowing Capcom they are maybe hard to find) Its short like 3 hours, but I have played that game for much longer than that.

Sure complexity in a game may make it seem intuitive and dramatic, but simplicity is truly genius. Unfortunetly with these next gen systems games need to have an "epic" story, an "epic" music score, and an "epic" "art" direction and more complexity in order to be one of the greatest games of all time and thats not right. Thats why true gem games like Odin Sphere and this will probably never be on a greatest games of all time list, but they are great in my book.

Well enought ranting back to subject. Go play Maverick Hunter!!!

If someone came up to me with an open mind and I could select just one game to give them, I would look over my game collection and grab Odin Sphere. Released last year in english for the PS2, it is a deep and epic story following 5 characters through the same world at the same time. Also, it is a sidescrolling 2D Action RPG with a leveling system unlike anything I have ever seen before. The world and characters are animated sprites. It has an easy to use, but still mildly complex alchemy system. Also, in all of the gardening you can do in the game, there is a bush that grows sheep. This makes it automatic excellence.

The game has once huge flaw. Get more than 2 enemies on the screen at once and start maiming them with your polearm and the game goes into slow motion ready to explode mode.

For an RTS fan I would give them Starcraft. I still play it daily. It's balanced, and the map editor opens up almost endless possibilities. The UMS games are limitless.

Maverick Hunter! Man, that was a gutsy move on Capcom's part. They remade a classic, but then they moved all the powerups and gave you a couple new ways to play. I already had Mega Man X for the SNES and the PS2, but I bought it again for the PSP, and never regretted it. It was a well made port and played like a first class mod. Very well done with great replay value.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who enjoyed Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, the point-click(?) adventure game for the DS. There were some funny moments in there, and the game played very well. I always felt a sense of urgency at the climax of each trial, and I found the game on the whole very fulfilling. I can see where people are coming from saying it's a bit repetitive, and not even I could play through it twice, but I guess that's the downside of the genre. Not an amazing game, but one I would definitely recommend for the contemplative gamer.

Oh yeah Phoenix Wright should be played as well. But make sure you start with the first one. Part 2 was not as good as one or three, but still has its charm. Practically no replay value, but worth the try.
