MW3 Dev Duties Hits Pause on Sledgehammer's Call of Duty Prototype

The opportunity to work with Infinity Ward was too good to pass up, says Sledgehammer.

Sledgehammer Games says that its original project, a third person action-adventure game set in the Call of Duty universe, is currently dead in the water, thanks to the studio's role as the Modern Warfare 3 co-developer.

Michael Condrey, one of Sledgehammer's co-founders, said that the studio had been working in the game for around six to eight months, and that the prototype version was coming along nicely. But nice prototype or not, Sledgehammer wasn't about to say no to Infinity Ward. "[The prototype] was pretty compelling, and it looked really good," said Condrey. "[But] the opportunity to work on the biggest thing in the industry with ... Infinity Ward ... was just an opportunity we couldn't [pass up]."

Condrey likened Sledgehammer's game to something like the Uncharted games, and said that he thought that there was a large audience for that kind of gameplay, particularly from a franchise as big as Call of Duty. I'm hoping that the Sledgehammer will be able to pick up where it left off once the work on Modern Warfare 3 is completed. A lot of the people at Sledgehammer worked on the original Dead Space, and I'd be interested to see what they make of a more contemporary setting.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 comes out for PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii on November 8th.

Hmmm... you gave up making a TPS COD game... to work second fiddle with IW?
Gave up willingly. Were forced too, what's the difference?

Remember, this is Activision, where they don't pay royalties to employees who at the time create the biggest selling entertainment property of all time.

Also, Activision probably saw it wasn't an FPS and freaked out. Wouldn't want to introduce something new to the series, that might make it worthwhile and give it more life.

I'll admit I play third-person game modes on CoD sometimes. Iunno, I like it.

But an exclusively TPS for CoD seems a bit poo-y to me...

3rd person action adventure set in the COD universe?

Interesting idea, but personally i can't imagine how that would work, but if Sledgehammer say they can get it working then good for them.

"CoD Universe"...?
As far as I can tell, the series is just a disjointed series of gunfights, explosions and the occasional bit of melodrama. Where the hell do you get "Universe" from? Half the games aren't even set in the same time period for god's sake...

1 - its only infinity ward in name, not in staff.
2 - you were already working with the "biggest thing in the industry" with the tps COD.

as the the first facebook user said;
"God forbid they do anything different with the CoD franchise."

I don't know about you, but the Modern Warfare series has interesting story and characters so I can see them making a CoD universe from MW.
