I don't think we can call it good story telling or publicity until we actually see it in the context of the story, so for now just ignore it.

"Hey guys, you remember last time when we had that No Russian level and everyone was all up in arms about it? Free press and all that?"

"Yeah, what about it?"

"If you could do something like that again and leak it... that'd be greeeeat."

Or at least that's how my cynical mind sees it.

Well, what I still don't get is that they make everything about the ''Allied forces'' as realisticly as possible, while Militia's all looks pretty much the same, besides maybe the color of their bandana. Also, civilian casulties was one thing I did miss in a game that is trying to be realistic as possible, as is dismemberment of bodies. Their all too clean, all in one piece. If I had to say what the problem is, I'd say they are being too cautious, bizarly.

Made purposely to stir controversy, but with that said, it does depict a (slight) reality that can occur during a terrorist bombing.

Controversy sells. Just see the success with No Russian. Modern Warfare 2 wouldn't have sold close as much without that being leaked prior to its release.

actually if you ask what people born between 1950 and 1992 fear most you would get terminal sickness, unemployment and loss of a loved one way before chemical bombs, war and radiation poisoning.

With writing that poor it borders on parody. It obvious as looking at the sun, it's a down right dirty way for getting media attention, and it is already working, in other words this thread.

The game comes out on the 8th, so talking about a major plot point that happens in the game on the 5th? Major dick move.

Not even spoiler tags..

Okay, first off: SPOILLEERRRRS.

Anyway, now that that's out of the way, What's the big deal.

I mean, since COD is usually good on the ROE it's gotta be the antagonist that does it.
Seriously though Villains gotta Vile, otherwise it's just a political conflict, and that's no fun.

You did read the title of the thread, right? If not, I'm sorry, but my sympathy is somewhat lacking then, as that should give a bit of a hint what the topic is going to be about..... :/ Plus, if I spoilered out all of.. one sentence that doesn't reveal too much, you'd have no idea what the hell I was going on about.

And its far from a major plot point actually - watch any of the trailers. This one will be far from a major plot point, as abhorrent as it is.

People are up in arms over nothing. It's not going to train children to be terrorists. It's not as if it's making fun of terror victims. Depiction of an incident should not be considered off-limits because it threatens to cause offence. This sort of mindless hysteria only increases the amount of people who will buy into the controversy.

Besides, only three tourists terrorists die in the explosion, so what's the problem?

There's still sufficient information in the title to spoil that event in the game. Anyone who sees it will know there is a "No Russian" -esque bombing event coming up.

It's impossible to say without context. Alone this video looks like controversy. It could easily be part of a meaningful wider context on terrorism or family or hopelessness, whatever themes mw3 is exploring.

dead link is dead :/
anyway, I say it's clever story telling, kind of like the A-bomb sequence in the first Modern Warfare, a good way of bringing emotion into the story. I don't really see why it would even be controversial anymore, I've seen faaaaaaaaaaaaar worse.

For the sake of not further upsetting anyone - as its obviously a bit of a problem - I've changed it so it reads "leaked" scene, and i've put spoiler tags in now.

The bigger pieces - such as combat on the London underground - got press attention pretty early on actually, so I don't think this was thought of as a particular money spinning piece. Emotional impact, certainly. For the sake of generating controversy, I don't think so. Or at least, the controversy generation is more of a secondary aim of it. If at all.

I don't buy the argument that because its not bloody enough, it therefore is obviously an attempt at cheap publicity. Do any of you really want to depict the parts of a mother and child in the street? There is a fine line between shock/emotional impact, and going way too far - and that would be crossing a line I think.

without the child that would be perfect but i think that they are going for similar shock and awe of the first game, good yes. controversial yes. its a big deal if civilians die because its against rules of the Geneva convention which is viewed as protection from the horrors of war- since they are doing it like this- its a good move to bring us in but isn't something i'd want for my children to play(under 5) i'd give them the more 'my country tis of thee' of older versions over this gritty realistic portrayal of terror warfare.

Good Storytelling ? BWAAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!! Im sorry, but that's just too much ! If your game can only be interesting by doing cheap controversy like this it's because either the developpers are fucking desperate for sales (coming from Infinity Ward and Activision that wouldn't surprise me) or that the game can offer nothing more than a little girl being killed. It's not brilliant storytelling it's being pretentious thinking that by killing a little girl you are playing an masterpiece that will be known for ages when in reality that's a dumb attempt for sales (and the campaign WILL probably last 4 hours anyway).

I am not offended by that, it's just that i don't see the point and to me, it's really fucking low. You know people will BUY this pile of military crap BECAUSE of this specific moment. It's controversial to the eye of people who don't play games but to us, that's nothing (to me, that's desperate).

You know what ? Im disapointed...i hope at least in Modern Warfare 4 (because you fuckin' know it's gonna happen and im pretty sure that Kotick ordered that will start working on it very soon) your character will be a member of Al-Quaida and you will pilot the actual plane and go straight through the World Trade Center (don't get offended this is sarcasm, im giving an example of how low these people can go for sales).

It's not great storytelling it's a cheap attempt for poignancy points. It's just like the children's drawing on the walls in Dead Space 2. There's nothing brilliant about the game ITSELF it's more about the marketing campaign because THIS part is only there for publicity and nothing else.

But i will tell this, if this game prevents people from creating ANOTHER topic on this forum about COD:M3 (or COD in general) or Battlefield 3 for AT LEAST a month or two than, i will be able to say that this game did something right.
