About this time last CoD release we were seeing plenty of gameplay footage, trailers, and behind the scenes for Black Ops. Currently all we have for MW3 right now is a 2 minute trailer. While Battlefield 3, set to release on the same day as MW3(quite a ballsy challenge), has the faultline gameplay trailer, and an interview with the back to Karkand DCL map designers. That leads me to believe 1 or more of the following options; 1: Internal problems are causing the game to behind schedule 2: The designers are taking a different approach to create discussion and suspense across the internet by not posting anything and letting the community go crazy 3: They have gotten so full of themselves that they believe no marketing is needs this early. 4: By setting a release date they will end up pushing the game out too early leaving glitchs, less detail, etc... finally making an overall worse experience for the gamers 5: And the obvious push back of the release.
Granted I will play the campaign for MW3, I'm only buying BF3. I've found Call of Duty to be making the same game for moneys sake and not taking any leaps you might see in BF3. For the community of gaming and FPSs, I sincerely hope that CoD multiplayer takes a dive and BF3 picks up the slack revolutionizing the FPS genre.
P.S for those interested in a different look on CoDs "domination of the FPS" see this article I stumbled upon a few weeks ago.

Give me your thoughts, and be gentle fanboys of each side.

You should really wait for E3 to actually happen before deciding this. I'm betting they will have their usual press conference segment with a gameplay segment and information.

They have a two year development time and Activision has a handful of studios to pull people in from, they won't pass up on this cash cow now that Guitar Hero has taken a set on the back burner.

No. It will release on time, always. Because Activision only cares about money, and they know that if they release it full of bugs and glitches, they will still make a lot of money. For otehr reasons too, but don't feel like listing them.

Basically this, they're probably going to try to make a huge splash at E3, and are content with letting people wait until then for some actual details

This.

They could put dog shit in the disk case and it would still sell more than Battlefield 3.

I hopw by now the 12yr old Xbox live playing kids have wised up to Activision. If MW3 is like the last few COD games. I hope it fails. BF3 on the other hand looks good. I have enjoyed the BF series lots and this looks to improve on that.

This.

E3 is next week and is perhaps the single biggest event of the year for Gaming news (and corporate saber rattling).

Any game that was ever in development and will ever be development could miss its release date so what exactly is the point of this thread?

I would say that it is number 3, and that they are correct in that assumption. All they need to do is say that the game will indeed be out, and they'll outsell BF3 no problem.
