I haven't been to one as they don't come to where I live. The closest I've come is a couple of pop culture conferences I went to because of my dad's job.

Anime Central 2002, we got there a day early, and I must say it was a blast! It wasn't as crowded as the last few years have been, and mostly everyone we talked to was pretty cool. From the 24 hour rooms playing anime, to the fan run panels, to the amazing Seung Mina girl, it was a great way to spend a few hundred dollars and spend some time w/ 2 of my better friends. It helps that I am a fan of anime, it kinda helps. Random room parties, and the looks on peoples faces that didn't know why everyone was in cosplay was priceless!
That's the problem. It costs too much $ for me. :(

Never been, I know absolutely nothing about anime (characters, shows, culture), and am happy be ignorant, the only real influence of the culture are the wannabe otaku-tards that congregate near my hangout during lunch. If those conventions are swarming with similar people, the only reason I would enter would be to troll. Grow a beard, wear a gears of war shirt, talk with a southern accent and spit whenever someone says something in Japanese (that would be an awesome day)

Would said act possibly endanger my life?

I wouldn't advise that, you would be beaten to death by cheap plastic swords.

I feel sorry for you. Never been to a convention myself, but as a huge Star Wars fan, I've been wanting to go to Celebration V this year, but I'm stuck up in Canada.

If I may draw a comparison, what you experienced would be the equivalent of a star trek fan amongst the raging fanboys of hell.

Never been to one... It sounds scary, but eh. I might go one day. I really dislike most anime but I can tolerate and even like some manga. For example, I was addicted to Death Note for a while. I don't quite understand the gigantic following it gets, but some don't understand video games either, so to each their own.

My girlfriend got me a gigantic Domo-Kun pillow from an Anime-Con in Hong Kong, though. THAT is awesome.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Ive always had fun at them, especially when you bring lots of alcohol, really a slight buzz seems to help things but so does money, nothing makes you feel better about things then spending cash on useless crap you suddenly need

I'm not into anime and I also went to an anime convention, just like you I found my niche, Improv Comedy. My God The 404's are one fantastic group and played one or two shows a day that absolutely blew my mind, the dealer's room was fun because I had an excess of cash in my pocket but the Webcomic panel blew because it was people I had never heard of, but then I went to a VGCats panel, and hearing him talk shit to the people who were attacking him was hilarious.

NEver been to a full-on anime convention, but the 2 sci-fi/fantasy cons I've been both had anime rooms. Good times were had, til I had to sit through the abomination of AMV Hell.... Plus nobody wanted to watch my Tekkaman Blade dvds....

First con I went, I was dressed V, ala V for Vendetta, sans wig, which I couldn't find.

Went to Rising Stars 18 in Bluefield, West Virginia, and Technicon, at Virginia Tech.

Also, Osamu Tezuka's Buddha was an AMAZING manga.
