I just got COD: black ops so put it in and play a bit of zombies with my brother then go to play online. i haven't connected my xbox to the internet in a months so predictably theres updates. the update finishes and it immediatly red rings (bottom right ring flashing) and says system error 74 i look it up on the net and apparently that means AV cable error, i change av cables and still no luck. Any ideas?

Unhook all the plugs and let the system sit for a bit. As long as you don't have the three rings you should be okay.

My old 360 had a similar problem. It wasn't serious enough to prompt an error message, or red rings, but there was something wrong with the physical construction of the console so I had to get another one. Luckily all I had to do was buy a (then) $200 Arcade version of the system and just put my hard drive on it.

I would suggest a new set of cables, but I'm not really sure that would help a whole lot.

E74 error? I had that not too long (few months) ago. I had to ship my Xbox to Microsoft to get it repaired, though I do believe ther are ways to do it yourself. I think E74 has the same extended warranty as the RROD.

Anyway, go here [http://support.xbox.com/en-gb/Pages/default.aspx], click "Repair Console" on the bottom left and follow the instructions if you want to go the official MS route. Google around for guides if you want to try fixing it yourself, but I can't speak to their veracity or safety.

Oh, and if you do go with Microsoft: Get them to e-mail you the shipping label. Don't get let them post it to you. I spent almost a month waiting for two separate shipping labels that were "sent out" until I finally called MS a third time and got them to e-mail it to me.
