I was going to buy a laptop very soon but now after my dad has tried out the Ipad 2 at my uncles house he is convinced it is better than laptops and computers and that it can do way more than them. Apparantely my uncle (who is an IT technician for the company both him and my dad work in) says that its the best thing to get. I just dislike iPads really and apple updates their products way too much, there is just something about a computer/laptop and how its formatted etc that I just like.

I need to convince my dad that its not better basically, suggestions?

Also, do you personally think it would be better to get a iPad2 rather than a laptop? If so, explain why please :)

way more than a laptop? your dad isnt very tech savvy amiright?

Laptop > iPad 2 every single time.
iPad is overpriced, underpowered, and DOESNT SUPPORT FLASH. /caps
The screen is obscured when typing, no tactile feedback.
It requires a computer to sync data with, making it something that also requires a computer to use. Why replace a computer with something that needs a computer???
the iPad 2 will be obsolete and outdated within 6 months anyway... :|

And finally, glossy screens are harder to read, especially in sunlight.

For the same amount of money, you can get yourself a fairly high-end laptop, which is stand-alone, relatively futureproof, and quite likely to be able to run a fair number of games. Also, most laptops have matt screens. Less pretty/shiny, but practical.

Any more reasons needed?

No offence, but your Uncle is either a Apple fan-boy or a sheer idiot. iPad's ONLY advantage over a laptop is its smaller, compact and perfect if you're a business person who ONLY checks the net and writes documents.

But still, even with that, there's the HUGE drawback of requiring a Computer to Sync with that has iTunes, lower battery life, crappy gloss screen, breaks easy, doesn't support alot of things including Flash which ALOT of things use. Plus it'll be dead soon with the iPad 3 coming out in a few months, thus making it an old piece of technology (again) like the iPhone generations.

I feel so sorry for you.

Things you can say to convince him

Typing on an Ipad is much slower for you. Touchpad keyboards are absolute garbage in regards to ease of use and speed. The work you'll be doing on an Ipad will take 2 hours to type out as opposed to 1 hour on an ordinary laptop.

The Ipad is EXTREMELY limited. Like other people have said, it doesn't support flash. So many websites are flash sites. Guess what youtube videos require. Flash support. The websites you can use will be greatly limited. Many educational websites use flash as a part of them as well.

For the last 3 years I've been using a laptop for work. It was fantastic to use for school. It had great functionality and I was able to get my work done in a fast efficient manner. Mainly due to having a proper keyboard to type on. Doing school work on an Ipad would have been EXTREMELY irritating and would have taken much longer to get done due to the awkwardness of the User interface that the Ipad has (touchsreen). The Ipad just doesn't cut it. An ordinary laptop has a proper keyboard which is much better and has A LOT more functionality. Put it this way, if a class requires you to use a specific program on your computer. Your Ipad won't run it, period. Getting a laptop is the only way to be sure you can do everything your school asks of you. An Ipad just isn't built for this kind of thing.

Again, I feel gravely sorry for you and I really hope your dad comes to his senses. Don't give up in arguing your case, like I said, you'll have a much better time doing your work on a laptop, and this is coming from someone that has experience with these things. Anything less than a proper laptop (none of that netbook garbage) and you'll be severely underhanded when it comes to doing your school work.

...yeah whos money is going towards it? Yours or his? If hes buying it, then try to convince him with what everyone else has said. If it's your money, buy what ever the fuck you want. Its your damn money.

Yea, there is no way in hell it is better to get an iPad than a laptop. Unless you are a business person who just needs to do basic things such as emails on the train to work or something. I have been at university for the past three years and have just had a little Asus Eee netbook for the past year and a half. Before that I had a Compaq notebook. The thing is, I have typed hundreds of thousands of words on both computers. I could never have done that on a tablet.

Netbooks are a good middle ground. They are smaller and more portable but still maintain the general functionality of a notebook.

End of the day, just show him these posts.

I've got a 1st gen iPad, and that's only because we got it for free due to insurance.
All they are are a gimmick; for the love of christ I hope you can convince him othewise:/:/

Ipads are great... for certain things. Not as your go to for school or whatever. It's a supplemental device that's great for surfing the web while you watch tv. to actually get work done? get laptop.

Would that convince him? I mean an iPad is great... but not for what it is that you need (from what I understand)

Now I would enjoy an iPad... but it would be to screw around on line, read my RSS etc.
