I didn't watch any anime for years bacuse of manga. So many of the adaptations were worse, seemed worse and took longer to process than their manga counterparts. So instead of watching them, I read a lot of them. Last year, I got back into it again for three reasons. One, I had watched a lot of the DC animated stuff and liked it a lot, but wanted something different. Then I watched Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann with my roomie who had never seen it before. Secondly, I had read the first arc of Magi and saw there was an anime coming out, so I asked if he'd like to watch it with me. Ended up watching a lot of shows together with him, and saw some on my own time. This winter I even tried following along with the season and watched a few of the current shows, like Kotoura-San, Maoyuu and Jojo.
Gotta say, there is no quicker way to lose interest in anime than to just watch everything, because most stuff in anything isn't very good. Magi became a disappointment when I discovered Aladdin was literally the savior, his enemies literally darkness and evil and dungeons littered the world by design rather than just being interesting places with lot of exciting adventures going on. Kotoura-san was horribly predictable when the crime plot began, even if I quite liked the characters. The UNLIMITED Hyobu Kyosuke was equally predictable, which is a bigger shame because it's more plot-oriented, and had very boring powers and fights despite some initial promise. I suppose that's what happens when it is a spinoff with a villain from the main series, there's no room for any changes to the status quo. Fractale let me down the most, a show that reminded me of Ghibli in the first episode ended up having a really jarring tone, a very annoying sidekick and a terrible final act.
Still, I'm happy I got back in. There's some fun stuff. Madoka was generally decent. Steins;Gate was exciting and less prolonged and cruel than When They Cry. Somehow, I find Joshiraku really funny. Kids on the slope was neat, even if the stuff near the end was pretty bad. Guardian of the Spirit showed me that you can have a show very everyone's a nice person and still have a lot of interesting conflict, even if the pacing wasn't that good. Samurai Champloo wasn't as varied as bebop, but a lot of fun anyway. Persona 4's anime is probably a better version of the plot than what the game has. I finally watched K-on!, and it turned out that wasn't horrible at all, despite my impressions of it being a very moeee kind of fanservice show. And watching some old shows again for the first time in a while, I was happy to discover that Ouran, Bebop, FLCL and Azumanga totally hold up.

Okay, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Attack on Titan becomes stupid after a bit. This is all I am going to say without spoiling it too much but the protagonist has supper powers, and there are others like him. There isn't much separating it from most other Anime.
Aww...too bad. I just hope it does not resemble Bleach/ Naruto levels of BS with regard to powers. I'm still interested in the mystery of the Titans though...where do they originate from and why are they the way they are. I hope the anime does not drop the ball on this front, that would be a shame.
It's not as bad as he mentions, if anything it only furthers the mystery of the Titans which despite the manga being farther ahead, has only gotten deeper with no clear answer.
Yeah, there's nothing to be worried about when it comes to the powers. I've read all the chapters(Because I couldn't stand the wait when I saw the trailer). It's shonen, but it's not bad, the powers are fitting and cool and not very overpowered. The 3D gear is still very useful, so it gets a good mix of that and the powers. What should worry you is wether the truth behind the mysteries is any good, bacuse they haven't revealed a lot about that yet. Also, whether the anime is going to rush to some dumb ending or end smartly when it catches up to the manga and make a second season later on instead.

Despite liking Dragon ball z growing up, I prefer characters within the show to overcome adversity by cunning, wit, skill and tactics, not because they're simply just that amazing.
anybody got recommendations for that? besides Deathnote?
It's all right if it's still shonen? Hunter x Hunter is good about that, the protagonists are generally weaker than their opponents and it's a lot less about powerlevels than it is about using your abilities cleverly. It takes the powers really slow and spends a lot of time naming and explaining the different aspects of them, and similarly to FMA, Gon and Killua don't actually get to beat very many opponents. There's an old anime adaptation and one currently running, so I'd recommend that one if you don't like to read.
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure similarly doesn't have very much to do with power levels and more to do with funny abilities. It's more dumb than HxH is and has more asspulls, but it's still very nice if you can get along with the art style and it recently got an adaptation of the first two parts(It works like Castlevania, each part depicting a new main character and not having that much to do with the previous one apart from the mechanics). It's not very well animated or anything, the manga is better, but it's still a nice ride. And the pace is bananas. It moves very fast, especially in the beginning.
