Personally it was Hayate The Combat Butler. It's such a silly series that even jokes about itself.

After watching that I got back into anime after years of not watching any.

My faith in anime was shaken when I saw how Blood + ended, where they really dropped the ball on the ending, but was restored with Gundam 00. See, it irks me when a series picks on a specific country (like America), because there's an audience there, and I like it when they take on big ideas that resonate on a far-reaching scale. And if there's big boobs, Guns Akimbo, crazy-awesome violence, and humor, then everybody wins!

Honestly, my faith was revived with this thing called Free!

You know it as "that swimming anime." But I'm already enjoying it if only for the ladies to get a little bit of sleaze aimed at them!

Personally, I lost faith in the Bleach/One Piece/Naruto stuff, but I never gave up on the classics I grew up with

Series like Big O, Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurōni Kenshin, GUNDAM, Cowboy Bebop

Lately, I've taken it upon myself re-watch/watch series(es) that were on Toonami (Tenchi, Outlaw Star, Casshern Sins etc.)

Then there's also series I've managed to happen upon, like Bakemonogatari, Katanagatari, Tatami Galaxy, Tiger & Bunny, Berserk and of course, Ah! My Goddess (Yeah, what? I love that series ~ it's adorable in every sense of the word.)

Full Metal Alchemist got me into Anime, and rekindled my interest again when rewatching it 3 years later.

I really liked how it didn't really have any power levels, the powers in that world were basicly like physics, a measurable science, "super secret power techniques bullshit" didn't really fly because the rules of their science disallowed it.
funny then, that the show is largely about the object that DOES enable one to do super powerful bullshit, YET NOONE OBTAINS IT!

Despite liking Dragon ball z growing up, I prefer characters within the show to overcome adversity by cunning, wit, skill and tactics, not because they're simply just that amazing.
anybody got recommendations for that? besides Deathnote?

Well, for skill, have you tried Rurouni Kenshin?
~ Just looking at him, you'd never know how skilled of a swordsman he is. He's not superhuman, he doesn't have super-strength. He's just damn fast, brilliant with a blade and perceptive.

Personally, I've been watching less action-oriented series as of late.
Try Bakemonogatari or Tatami Galaxy if you're feeling adventurous ~ They're both brilliant

With Shingeki no Kyojin, it seems a bit more confusing and there's a lot of questions that don't rise a lot of interest. Is this the future, past, or an alternate reality or timeline? Are the swinging attached cables on their bodies a gimmick or central to the plot? Why are they fighting giants who seem to have no clue what's going on or are not harming anyone? What ARE the giants? I would probably want to check it out, but it's not that appealing to me.
As far as I can tell it's a alternate world that is similar to our own.

Also the cables are used to fight Titans, the Titans rampage through human villages, eating and killing anyone in their path with grins on their faces. They don't speak or have any sort of intelligence, they just eat and kill. The titans in the past nearly wiped out Humanity and are now getting closer to doing that again.

It's not even a matter of humans going into their territory, Humanity's territory is walled off and now the Titans are starting to break down the walls and move further in.

As for what the Titans are, no one really knows. It's still a mystery in the Manga which is further than the anime.

To elaborate on the cables, they're used to almost "climb" up to the giant, because without them killing them would be difficult.

Ok, chalked up some more series for my anime hit list when/if i ever get around to finishing watching Shakugan no Shana.

I always found anime based on light novels generally are better than anime based on manga, at least for animation quality, but they can still be a far cry from anime originals.

I didn't watch any anime for years bacuse of manga. So many of the adaptations were worse, seemed worse and took longer to process than their manga counterparts. So instead of watching them, I read a lot of them. Last year, I got back into it again for three reasons. One, I had watched a lot of the DC animated stuff and liked it a lot, but wanted something different. Then I watched Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann with my roomie who had never seen it before. Secondly, I had read the first arc of Magi and saw there was an anime coming out, so I asked if he'd like to watch it with me. Ended up watching a lot of shows together with him, and saw some on my own time. This winter I even tried following along with the season and watched a few of the current shows, like Kotoura-San, Maoyuu and Jojo.

Gotta say, there is no quicker way to lose interest in anime than to just watch everything, because most stuff in anything isn't very good. Magi became a disappointment when I discovered Aladdin was literally the savior, his enemies literally darkness and evil and dungeons littered the world by design rather than just being interesting places with lot of exciting adventures going on. Kotoura-san was horribly predictable when the crime plot began, even if I quite liked the characters. The UNLIMITED Hyobu Kyosuke was equally predictable, which is a bigger shame because it's more plot-oriented, and had very boring powers and fights despite some initial promise. I suppose that's what happens when it is a spinoff with a villain from the main series, there's no room for any changes to the status quo. Fractale let me down the most, a show that reminded me of Ghibli in the first episode ended up having a really jarring tone, a very annoying sidekick and a terrible final act.

Still, I'm happy I got back in. There's some fun stuff. Madoka was generally decent. Steins;Gate was exciting and less prolonged and cruel than When They Cry. Somehow, I find Joshiraku really funny. Kids on the slope was neat, even if the stuff near the end was pretty bad. Guardian of the Spirit showed me that you can have a show very everyone's a nice person and still have a lot of interesting conflict, even if the pacing wasn't that good. Samurai Champloo wasn't as varied as bebop, but a lot of fun anyway. Persona 4's anime is probably a better version of the plot than what the game has. I finally watched K-on!, and it turned out that wasn't horrible at all, despite my impressions of it being a very moeee kind of fanservice show. And watching some old shows again for the first time in a while, I was happy to discover that Ouran, Bebop, FLCL and Azumanga totally hold up.

Okay, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Attack on Titan becomes stupid after a bit. This is all I am going to say without spoiling it too much but the protagonist has supper powers, and there are others like him. There isn't much separating it from most other Anime.
Aww...too bad. I just hope it does not resemble Bleach/ Naruto levels of BS with regard to powers. I'm still interested in the mystery of the Titans though...where do they originate from and why are they the way they are. I hope the anime does not drop the ball on this front, that would be a shame.
It's not as bad as he mentions, if anything it only furthers the mystery of the Titans which despite the manga being farther ahead, has only gotten deeper with no clear answer.
Yeah, there's nothing to be worried about when it comes to the powers. I've read all the chapters(Because I couldn't stand the wait when I saw the trailer). It's shonen, but it's not bad, the powers are fitting and cool and not very overpowered. The 3D gear is still very useful, so it gets a good mix of that and the powers. What should worry you is wether the truth behind the mysteries is any good, bacuse they haven't revealed a lot about that yet. Also, whether the anime is going to rush to some dumb ending or end smartly when it catches up to the manga and make a second season later on instead.

It's all right if it's still shonen? Hunter x Hunter is good about that, the protagonists are generally weaker than their opponents and it's a lot less about powerlevels than it is about using your abilities cleverly. It takes the powers really slow and spends a lot of time naming and explaining the different aspects of them, and similarly to FMA, Gon and Killua don't actually get to beat very many opponents. There's an old anime adaptation and one currently running, so I'd recommend that one if you don't like to read.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure similarly doesn't have very much to do with power levels and more to do with funny abilities. It's more dumb than HxH is and has more asspulls, but it's still very nice if you can get along with the art style and it recently got an adaptation of the first two parts(It works like Castlevania, each part depicting a new main character and not having that much to do with the previous one apart from the mechanics). It's not very well animated or anything, the manga is better, but it's still a nice ride. And the pace is bananas. It moves very fast, especially in the beginning.

Gargantia is great but Titan is terrible.
As for the topic, I "lost my faith" in anime after watching all of Naruto in 8th grade, but I got back into anime with Rozen Maiden.

Since I left college last year I haven't been able to bring myself to watch too much anime (job hunt related depression which also happened to coincide with multiple seasons of crap) though I still read manga like Naruto and Bleach (I know it's bad but I just can't stop), Genshiken, etc. and sporadically released OVAs of series I love (Gundam Unicorn, Code Geass Akito the Exiled) but Attack on Titan got me back into watching anime on a weekly basis again.

Also Evangelion 3.0, hell yeah. It's confusing as hell, but once you let it sit with you awhile it's actually really brilliant in the context of the rest of the series. Is this want you wanted, a badass Shinji? Fuck you, this is Evangelion, being a badass gets you nowhere.

Wait, is it like Bleach in that it starts out with a monster hunting premise, which is really just an excuse for people to have powers to fight each other with? A lot of manga seem to do that nowadays, start out with a crazy premise, devolve into battle manga. Though at least Bleach sort of brought back around so that the monsters got in on the one on one fights.

I have never lost my faith in anime as there always at least one very good series in each season, but I can't believe no one brought last season PSYCHO-PASS here, I mean it's the best anime I have seen since Idon't know Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in The Shell. Psycho-pass is inspired by a lot of sci-fi novels and works, but has it's own strong characters and history and art. And the best anime villain since Char. I can't really talk about what happens as it would create a lot of spoilers but I definitely recommend it.

ON Kyojin: The "superpowers" make sense for the plot from the beggining the series foreshadows what is gonna happen from nearly the beggining. (Rather it would be even contradictory to the series initial concept if not because of it.) The real question will be what the answer to the mystery is going to be. And if it is going to be any good. As for characters yeah you get good stuff.

Restored by a one-two combo of Shingeki no Kyojin and Suisei no Gargantia.
I was liking Gargantia up until episode 4. I was bored, to be honest, and I'm worried that it's going to be the meat and potatoes of the story... with content the likes of which we saw in 1-3 just punctuating the proceedings. Gen-san has lost his touch since he stopped dealing in gore and rocks-fall-everyone-dies plotlines (Fate Zero for example). Psychopass, his most recent effort before this, was also terrible.

Minor thematic spoiler.
I'll still watch, but I'm really not interested in the "soldier learns to have warm feels" developmental episodes, and I think there are going to be lots of those.

Personally, unless you were having serious fun last episode, I'd recommend switching to or supplementing your Gargantia with Kakumeiki Valvrave. It's a bit like Technoman Tekkaman Blade meets Gundam. It's very, very good.

Might I also recommend this season: high-fantasy-turned-urban-fantasy-anime Hataraku Maou-sama! and also-mecha-anime Majestic Prince.

Valvrave OP.

Majestic Prince commercial preview.

Edit: Actually, I'm doing MJP a huge disservice by just mentioning it in passing toward the end of a post. I think it's a little better than Valvrave, and I think that both the "other" mecha anime this season are somewhat better than Gargantia. But you must decide for yourself.
I don't really see in any way how Valvrave is better than Gargantia. Valvrave has incredibly cliched characters and plot and Gargantia is anything but that. Just because something has better action doesn't mean it's better and Gargantia hasn't had any pointless fanservice, at least not yet. Oh and yea Majestic Prince is really good so far probably the best CG in an anime since Karas and is one of the more overlooked shows this season.

OT: For anyone worried about what people are saying about Attack on Titan based on the manga I wouldn't worry about it that much. It took 2 episodes to do the story of 1 chapter in the manga and at worst the only problem is that it really doesn't do anything out of its "comfortable place" as long as you're in it for the action then I don't see any way someone could dislike it.

Soooo....to make this into a discussion. What, if anything, has restored YOUR faith in Anime/ Manga? Or, if your faith hasn't been restored, what would be able to restore it?
Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

As much as I like Fate Zero, it was a spin-off to a previously good franchise. Likewise the Evangelion movies. I hadn't seen any new IP in anime that I cared about for a long time.

And then along game Madoka, proudly proclaiming itself a "spiritual successor" to Revolutionary Girl Utena - and not being full of shit. Best anime I've seen in years.

I've always been pretty good at filtering out the crap, so I've never really had my faith shaken. However, shows like Princess Jellyfish, Usagi Drop, Croisée in a Foreign Labyrinth and We Still Don`t Know the Name of the Flower We Saw That Day make me proud to be a fan.

Did you see Mawaru Penguindrum?

And on Kyojin again: I think the good of the series is less the story but it's characters and how well it shows emotion both trough words and actions. To me one of the best moments of the series was this:
The chapter where Eren takes the rock to the wall, not because of the action but because of his answer to Amin and his toughts.

And since i didn't really give a context: Psycho-pass, is a sci-fi series which main concept is that a person psychological tendencies can be analyzed to determine for example a persons probability of commiting a crime. And if this sounds familiar is probably because you saw the same movies or read the same books as the creators. Two characters even discuss some of these works in the series. And like the best works it raises a lot of questions on the nature of life, society and law, and like the best it gives no concrete answer since there is not one.

I never really lost faith in anime as a whole, but I feel like Hunter x Hunter revitalized my interest in action shounen. It feels vastly different from other shonen titles like "The Big 3", although I like One Piece a lot, I feel like Hunter x Hunter is pretty much the best shounen there is at the moment, on going at least.

Unfortunately, the author goes on huge hiatuses, so even though it started in 1998, it only has 340 chapters out at the moment, and the latest hiatus has been going for over a year, due to health reasons if I remember correctly. The plus side to this though, is that since the original anime adaptation was cut short in around 2003-4, they started it over completely in 2011, but with higher quality, and a severe lack of filler like the first series had. There have only been 2 filler episodes so far if I recall correctly.

But yeah, I felt like I had found a real gem when I discovered Hunter x Hunter, and greatly recommend it to people who think the shounen genre has nothing to offer anymore to at least give it a try, althought it really picks up later, not at the beginning, not that the beginning is bad, but you don't really quite see the awesomeness of the series until later.

Oh, and I guess Sword Art Online brought me back to anime after what I felt was like 2 seasons of bland school life/ecchi anime, and dug up my .hack// nostalgia.
Uh, the original hunter x hunter series was pretty much filler free. As a matter of fact, the only filler was battleship island, which was AWESOME. HxH just got past the point where the original stopped, which means it's all new episodes.

Lately anime has been full of meh series. Sword art online got me pumped, but it's over now, but I hear it's coming back later this year with new episodes. I'll probably die of old age waiting for Hellsing: Ultimate to finish. Beserk the golden age gives me hope that we will see new stuff beyond the epic bummer of an ending that series got.
