I'm still not getting the point of why anyone would want to do something like that, do they not have anything better to do with their time?

Anonymous is a bunch of small nerds that wish they were big, to put it bluntly. They try to scare and threaten people through the internet because if they did it in real life, they'd get the shit kicked out of them (or stabbed, or shot, etc). Don't fear them, just pity them.
I don't think you know quite what you are talking about. Anon is responsible for many ruined lives. Even if many of them are small nerds who "wish they were bigger", they can easily make you regret insulting them, in ways other than physically.
Who? Who's lives have they ruined? Do you have any serious proof or is this all word of mouth? (Not counting the animal rights criminals).

Also he shouldn't be so afraid irl, well unless they have his home address in which case he should expect many pizzas if he manages to rile them up enough.
What if you like pizza and happen to be fabulously wealthy?

True Anonymous wouldn't be bothered to harass your friend so he just attracted some small time members. I recommend your friend to NOT attract any more attention.
Anon is fucking crazy and potentially even dangerous, it was a stupid idea to insult them in the first place. You don't want you name and information plastered all over the place.

So he should just stay away from them. Don't go to places like 4Chan or anything. I've seen way too many poor people ruined by them. (although most were asking for it, by acting like huge attention whores)

Urgh, I hate the whole Anonymous thing. To me I see a bunch of people who were picked on at school and use the anonymity of the Internet to finally fulfil their childhood tough-guy fantasies that general ineptness robbed them of back in school.

I do like the Anonymous "character" though for want of a better word. Honestly you couldn't make up a cooler comic book villain, it's like that scene in "Fight Club" where Ed Norton keeps coming across all those people who turn out to be Tyler Durdan's lackeys... I'm sure they'd love that description of themselves because of the whole "rule 1 and 2" thing. But really they kind of ruin it for themselves you know. I mean here they have the persona which could be a really cool "villain" and all they use it for it spamming websites and mesage boards, hacking people's Facebook accounts to leave "im gay lol hurr" wall posts and protesting, of all things, Scientology.

I'm not saying they should go further I'm just saying it's stupid for a great villainous character to talk like a lolcat, make gay jokes and look at anime child porn all day.

Should you/your friend fear them? No. They're just bored Internet patrons as are we all. Sure their boredom seems to be qualmed by, in general, being ginormous dickheads to others but nothing they can do can really harm you, more annoy to the extent of wanting to headbutt your monitor. Eventually though they'll get bored.

My view on Anonymous is: stay away from them and they stay away from you. I don't fear them, but I'm not going to insult them. The internet is a big place, and they're just bullies in one part of it. As for advice to your friend; if he really fears Anonymous, tell him to take a break from the internet. You can live without it (unless you, like me, sold your soul to the Escapist) tell him to take a vacation. it's almost summer (in the northern hemisphere anyway) tell him to take a holiday. Eventually Anonymous will get bored. They do not forgive and they do not forget, but they do get bored, and they do move on. So should your friend.
Also, good answer.

About the worst I know of was that one guy that had his myspace hacked and received prank phone calls. Scary shit, right there /sarcasm. I've never heard of any physical assaults or the like.

I think this all this Anonymous fear is from word of mouth. People tend to exaggerate and overstate things as a matter of human nature, and thus a story easily grows into a legend, then into a fact whether it's true or not.

My advice to your friend is to never let bullies of any sort scare him. Fear is funny, in that the worst thing someone can do to you is make you fear them. Fear of their actions, not their actions, is what gives them power over you. The threat of harm is always worse than harm itself.

Nothing is scarier. [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NothingIsScarier]

Scariest films and games have always been the ones where the fear is psychological. What you imagine is scarier than what could happen.

Burn everything connected to that youtube account. Cancel the account, suspend the email address, dont use it again, etc. Just make sure you don't do anything else stupid that they can link you for. Chances are, it's one guy who did it for a laugh. The chances of a large portion of 4chan going against him is very slim, unless he said some really stupid stuff (like that joshUtuber kid. Annon got him suspended, if not banned.)

If i were him i'd delete the hate video and try not to attract anymore attention.

Anonymous for the most part aren't very dangerous, if you run into the wrong people though... you're fucked quite frankly :p

I see.

I'll just say this:
Never bend to an enemy.
Never make an enemy of someone who previously had no reason to bother you and that won't be much of a problem.
ANON is an enemy to everyone.
Therefore, everyone should make them their enemy in order to root them out.
Have you ever met one in person and actually talked to one?

and after making one Youtube video insulting 4chan, he was attacked by anonymous.
*sigh*

It's like poking a beehive... Why would you do that unless you're begging for punishment? Would you jump in an MMA ring and start insulting the champion?

You realize your friend went out of his way to antagonize a large and provenly powerful group of people that had absolutely no beef with him prior to that, right? Whatever he gets, he had it coming.

Anon is different from terrorists in a few ways actually, when you think about it, terrorists only really do things to your surroundings. Your surrounding nation, things like that, where as Anon will attack you as a whole. Not just with false photos, but they have also been known to do "Police Raids" which means that a lovely squad car shows up at your house believing you've done a crime. Same with every other kind of delivery service; however, like everyone else has said just don't poke the bear.
