My fellow gamers, this may sound like some corny speech and some of you may say that it is, but that's not what this is about. This about OUR power: our power to try, re-evaluate, and succeed; our power to use our minds and experience in games to solve problems in reality;our power of determined will and perseverance, our ability to never surrender until we capture that flag, nuke those zerg, or kill that optional boss. But most importantly, our power over the publishers. Yes, WE have power over them, not the other way around. We as consumers are in control for we are the precious life-blood of the publishers of Valve, EA, Square-Enix and even Ubisoft. WE control the success of a game, and how it will live on in the memories of others and more importantly, how developers can see their flaws from their project and improve on them in order to appease our desires. Publishers have been fair to us, in an almost loving relationships. They give us memorable titles that we still speak of, even if they are over 30 years old, though this is not always the case.
Publishers use our fandom to their advantage, and don't pretend you don't know what I mean. They tease with promises of titles we love and wish to see remade or given a sequel in order for us to stay loyal to them, and appease their diet of printed salad. Many of us have desired to see a return of the popular Final Fantasy 7 game remade in glorious 3-D and HD quality, but we have never seen it surface. We are told that the developers would," explore the idea," and tease us with fake screen-shots of a project that solely exists as bait-and-hook for us gamers and to ensure that they still have power over us and ensure that we will follow them. Valve, creators of probably the greatest system of purchasing, storing, and playing games, have promised an Episode 3 to our Half-Life series. We get teased and mocked with surprises, so many of us at E3 2010 wished that the surprise was the fabled and desired third installment only to be replaced by the acclaimed Portal sequel, Portal 2. In so many games, so many things are left unanswered, left untouched, and yet the publishers use the unanswered questions and your desire to find the conclusion by releasing what looks like your sequel just to give you hope and keep the publishers coffers nice and full. SO where does our power play into this? Simple if we are the blood that keeps publishers fully sustained and healthy, what if we were to stop flowing? What if we refuse to feed the beast his daily appetite of printed salad? What if we unite and boycott?
I know, boycotting sounds like too much work for what may go unnoticed and treated as a nuisance by major publishers, but it WILL work. The feminist movement began as protests and petitions amongst middle-class women for simple rights to vote and have equal rights, now Hilary Clinton is Secretary of the State and women leading the way in fields of science, humanitarian aid, and wildlife preservation. We all know the recent boycott of Left 4 Dead 2 was at first something we looked at and thought," What?" but in the end Valve showed the members of the boycott the improvements in L4D2 and were extremely pleased. Not to mention the boycotting of the tea at Boston harbor, i.e. the Boston Tea Party, the even that led to the Revolutionary War, The Declaration of Independence, and the foundation of the United States of America! We, the people are, are the power of tyrants, business, and technological revolution! We are the blood of the publishers, WE decide to buy their product, WE decide whether to feed the publishers or not. If we want to see REAL proof of Half Life 2 Episode:3, refuse Valve their sum. If you want to see the nostalgic Final Fantasy VII in 3D and HD, stop flowing within the heart of Square-Enix and make them bend to your will.
For the publishers do not have power over us, WE have power over them.
If we desire what we desire, let us starve our suppliers. Let's make them realize that WE don't serve them money, they serve us good games that we want. That WE are in charge, not them.
