My girlfriend has just started to play games. What is best to start her on?

LittleBigPlanet is freaking awesome. May be slightly too "childish", but that is no bad thing.
I concur with this. If she just started, this simplistic, colourful game is perfect.

Portal. That's how I got a girl hooked on gaming (she heard Still Alive on youtube but didn't know where it came from until I told her)

Also if you have plans to expand past the PS3 I know a lot of girls who like Mario and Zelda.

People have said Portal. I will restate portal.

Introduced my now ex fiance to gaming through Portal 1, Hellgate, Timesplitters and Burnout (I had a PS2 at the time). It worked, she ended up playing some Free to Play MMO's whilst I chilled in WoW. And after a while it was sometimes a moderate challenge to shoot her in the head or beat her in Burnout, at least when I was stoned.

Don't pussyfoot around treating her like she is 7 just cause she aint gamed. Don't patronize her.

Give her Portal 1 and make her play through it. If she finds it boring, Get a new girlfriend. If she beats all the challenge levels and downloads a bunch more levels cause she wants more portal... Propose to her.
I'd actually say save Portal for once she's gotten used to games, and fps in general. One of the greatest parts of Portal was how it retrained you to think. If it's the first game you get into, that is lost.

Still a good game, though.

Nothing.

It's a bad, bad idea to have a girlfriend who likes gaming....Especially when she turns out to be better than you....Not that that ever happened to me.

Try something 2d first, then simple 3d, then you can start getting to the complex stuff. Use a logical progression of complexity. Avoid sandbox games at first, if you don't know what you're doing, they get disorienting quickly.

Am I the only person who managed to miss out on the fact that his girlfriend recently got out of a coma and has severe braindamage?

Seriously.

Female does not mean retarded.

Lizzie started on Portal and within a week was thinking with Portals better than I ever had. And other than the sims that is the first game she had ever played (I am making reference to my ex-fiance here). And hell, she got further into Hellgate: London than I ever did.

I have thrown in my bit and I am now avoiding this. So much of this is about dumbing things down for the girlfriend with down-syndrome.
The specific quote you used (and the rest of us, for that matter) is referring a good starting point for new gamers in general, regardless of gender. Open-world/sandbox games as a first experience for any new gamer may be overwhelming and turn you away from the industry because they leave so much open for you to do at any time. Something linear/straight-forward is his best option, even moreso if there's co-op local multiplayer (so that they can double the effectiveness by having the two of them spending time together on the hobby).

DooM. About the most simplistic game you can do. Shoot guys with any gun, pick up coloured key, go through coloured door. Win points available only in hell!

I still firmly believe that platformers are the best intro to gaming.
RPGs can be good too. I got my sister to play case 1 and 2 of Phoenix Wright on my DS a few years ago and she got so into it she pretty much played through all 3 games with very little time in between.

Dunno about you but my girlfriend seemed to enjoy GTA IV to an almost perverse level, strange how previously she had only player Mario Kart Wii and Super Paper Mario

LBP, Cubixx if she likes games like that, Borderlands is actually pretty easy and fun without all of the brown gritty nonsense you see in a lot of games nowadays would be a decent intro into shooters, Heavy Rain if she likes drama, Bioshock 1 and 2 would be good as well, although I liked 1 better than 2.

A lot of the games the the Playstation Store would be good. Tetris, Peggle, Cubixx, Super Stardust HD, Dead Nation, and other such games are cool.

Why dont you ask your girlfriend what she would like to play!? All we know about her is that she is female and likes lego indiana jones. Not enough information to suggest games. People either treat her as a girltard or they compare her to other females they know with their suggestions.

I think one of the Ratchet and Clank games is a good place to start. Though the most recent one might be a year or two old but it's fun, it's got a good story and the difficulty curve isn't too steep.

There is only one answer when starting a life of gaming: OCARINA OF TIME!
Bust out the 64, or the cube, and have her play through the greatest first. It's kinda like how you have to study Shakespeare a school.
