Right now, at this moment, I can hear my stepfather watching a show in the other room, where guys compare how awesome their cars are, argue about it and then do modifications to them to compete doing random crap. I'll give you a play-by-play of a scene I just heard. "Oh my truck is better than yours" "Nuh-uh" " uh-huh!" "Fine, lets do a burn-out competition to see who's truck is better CUZ WE'RE MEN!" "Yeah! Great idea" *next day* "Okay, lets do this" *guys starts doing a long ass burnout* "Oh man, you're awesome! You win! Good job!"....

I mean really, what happened to shows that had a plot, or anything resembling entertainment value... I just can;t believe shows like this and Storage Wars actually exist anymore...

Whats the worst reality show you've seen/heard of?

Do you like reality shows?

Let me tell you a secret. Do you remember that writers' strike in Hollywood, in 2008?
It fucked the industry.
The studios thought that because they had no writers they could not make any new content. They planned months upon months of re-runs... but then the salvation came in the form of a reality TV show, in which absolutely no serious writing is involved - therefore there was no need for seasoned writers.
Here.
That's the result of those dark, dark times. It even gave birth to the horrible Transformers two, where they didn't even work with a proper script at the time. Just think of it as a reality TV show, with giant robots. And Megan Fox.

replying to the topic: they scraped it so much, that they got to the earth, after which they started digging, and hit rock bottom( and most likely got a drill out, and continued digging)

to sum it up... yes i agree with you

I used to actually find Big Brother kinda interesting. Though I'm not sure how much of it was thanks to the ol' mother always having it on.
They put in a bunch of people and seeing which ones you liked, didn't like and how they all got on served as some entertainment.
Then they thought "Hey, we should just throw in the most unlikable, horribly irritating freaks of nature that no one could possibly like in!"

Then I went back to old cartoons if I felt like I had to watch something.

Reality shows?
Probably the only shows that rate lower then those cheap soap operas, because they have even less work behind them... never did think it was possible.

The worst one to me is still Big Brother, those fuckers do nothing, they sit on a god damn couch and people at home go sit on a couch to watch them...
Are you all barking mad or something?!

Cheap, mindless entertainment. TV.

For the most part all of it is just like that. There are gems to be sure but from what I've experienced personally I can say they try to make everything into a show.

Now I'm off to make an indie film with my totally radical, left wing pals down at Starbucks.

Sarcasm?

Because two rednecks comparing their shitty trucks sounds like the polar opposite of Top Gear.
it was more the person 1 has a vehicle and person 2 has a vehicle, they can't decide whose is better so they compare them in ridiculous but entertaining ways

The only realities shows that I've actually liked are Master Chef and Solitary. Solitary in particular is great fun to watch because it's just 9 people shoved into small rooms and seeing how long they'll last against each other. Oh, and they have no contact with one another, just a computerized voice that mocks them and tells them what to do.

Anyways, I agree that most other shows are just terrible. There's just too many theories on why they still exist and I find it just pointless to worry about it. Best policy is to just ignore they exist and hope others follow suit IMO.

Ah okay. NOW I KNOW!!

the number of times I've said 'AAAH, now I know...and knowing is half the battle..G.I. JOE' but no-one has known what I'm talking about, it's nice to know I'm not the only one that uses that reference.

Reality TV killed TV for me.
Everything since Survivor and Big Brother has been this slow, perpetual slide into shitsville.

That is, the number and quality of TV has just slipped further and further down the drain as time has gone on. For every half-decent show or sitcom we get a Jersey Shore, American Idol and a Survivor knockoff.

Oh wells. At least Burn Notice is still good.

To respond to the topic title directly: when did reality TV shows ever not scrape the bottom of the barrel?!

Is it really entertainment to observe the ignorance and stupidity of some of the members of our race? Alright, it can be, but when it's slapped in our faces so often, one really can legitimately despair.

So basically just robots then?

OT: I hate reality TV. I don't want to watch TV shows revolving around people I don't care about and their problems.

"Reality" TV shows have always scraped the bottom of the barrel, in my opinion. I think I've only seen two or three shows that managed to be entertaining, and they all got their start in the UK (Kitchen Nightmares, How Clean is Your House?).

The only reason why they're so prevalent is because networks can make them on a shoestring budget, thus requiring a far smaller viewing audience to turn a profit.

Personally, I don't mind it. Most of them are shit, but I don't watch most of them. Funny how that works.

So, anyway. Some of the new ones seem a little desperate, though.
