I don't like the traditional Big Brother, American Idol, and Survivor style reality shows. I love Mythbusters and the British Top Gear -- which, face it guys, are just as much reality shows as American Choppers or Pawn Stars.

I also like the various BBC shows starring Gordon Ramsay; for a celebrity chef, the dude's a badass. For those who have only seen the American versions of his shows, he's not an asshole, he just gives tough love where it's needed. Fox likes to play up the swearing and cut out a lot of the context.

Most reality shows, however, are only slightly better than infomercials -- which is pretty much the slot in the network's budget they're filling.

Reality shows have been scraping the bottom of the barrel for like 15 years. Remember temptation island? No? Good lord what a terrible concept. Remember who wants to marry a millionaire?

Heres what makes me furious: reality television has extruded its tentacles into every other channel, especially those who want thoughtful programming. The "Learning Channel" went reality mode like 10 years ago. The history channel is now nearly entirely reality programming-- ice road truckers, top shot, ax men, pawn stars, swamp people, american pickers (or whatever), american restoration. So much for "modern marvels," all you get on demand is all that reality garbage.

Animal planet is now all animal cops/animal horders/etcetera.

Discovery-- mythbusters was OK at first, but now all of their shows are based on the mythbusters/fucking crab fisherman archetype.

NatGeo is mostly "lets watch prisoners shank eachother" or "the dog whisperer"

Finally, even the lofty science channel has succumbed, with their asstounding Junkies and survivalist garbage "stuff with hackett" or whatever the hell thats supposed to be about. Yeah, I liked idiot abroad too, but boy did that open the floodgates.

Reality shows r as real as wrestling, so what do you expect?
Besides, the recent failure of big brothers return in the Uk shows that people might actually be getting bored of the damm things at long last!

Pete's PA, a show about Pete Burns finding a new new PA, also Paris Hiltons New BFF, wha... wh... why would anyone want to be friends with this woman? Also why would you want to watch people wanting to be friends with her? Actually half of ITV2s lineup is shitty reality shows, or was up until recently.

Operation Repo seems to be a pointless show, people recount stories of their repos, then reenact them, but it can be entertaining sometimes.

Yeah TV's in the crapper. Although the pawn shop shows I find entertaining. Hardcore Pawn is my favorite so far.

Some shows are ok, i quite like Pawn Stars and American Pickers atm as i like taking guesses at what the deal price will be and some of the stuff is quite interesting. Others are at best tolerable and and worst torture. Really it just depends on how interesting the premise and stars are and how much of an effort goes into the show.

I will say my pet hate is that we're just getting halfway through the X-factor here in the UK and now Strictly come dancing has started on the BBC (You'd hope they'd be better than this wouldn't you?) and Britain's Got Talent is just about to start auditioning. My TV experience now consists almost entirely of Law and Order since their is absolutely nothing else on.

I just hate how reality shows go in a wave. You'll find a single show about Repossessions. Then more will pop up on other channels. American Pickers starts up on History. Now there are some other guys doing a show about it and now a few chicks have their own show.

My TV is off for about 6 days and 22 hours a week. The only time it is on is for Doctor Who and Qi.

I watch everything else online.

But yeah Reality TV is pure garbage.

I like some crime dramas. Okay, just one. NCIS is great, though.

Bridal-plasty. It's where a bunch of soon to be brides compete in random challenges in order to "earn" plastic surgery.
The thing that horrified me the most about this show was when a bride was kicked off the show they said "Your quest to become the perfect bride has ended." As if they had to have plastic surgery in order to be a good bride!
Clarification: NONE of the women had actual diseases or any sort of medical condition that would require plastic surgery, they were all vainity based.

Worst Reality Show? Well there is one about cakes (though I forgot the title), but the worst would have to be "Worlds Ultimate Gamer".

In defense of The History Channel, they kind of ran out of ideas for new episodes of Modern Marvels about five years ago. It used to be stuff like the Hoover dam and the Empire State Building. Now it's stuff like sausage, the toilet, and packaging -- all of which are real episode subjects. No defense for the rest of it; the Military channel now has more history than the History channel.

Oh, I don't know. I enjoy some of them mindlessly. Toddlers and Tiaras is my guilty pleasure.

Sometimes it's just nice to switch off and watch something without much brain.

Reality TV killed TV for me.
Everything since Survivor and Big Brother has been this slow, perpetual slide into shitsville.

That is, the number and quality of TV has just slipped further and further down the drain as time has gone on. For every half-decent show or sitcom we get a Jersey Shore, American Idol and a Survivor knockoff.

Oh wells. At least Burn Notice is still good.
Someone else watches Burn Notice!? I didn't know any other people who watched it. I feel better now.
