Freespace 2, open space tends to make you lose your perspective, so any time you fly past a capital ship it reinforces that those things are huge, especially impressive when there are two of them blasting away at each other.

Far Cry, when I saw the water, that beautiful rippling water. My god it is still a good looking game. I had just played HL2 but visually Far Cry blew it out of the water.

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood has some very impressive scenery, unfortunatly it looks like shit when you get close to it. This despite running the game a maximum.

Oh, a couple other things. This time from Mass Effect.

When you first speak with Sovereign. Sent chills down my spine.
When you talk with Vigil. Just felt so... enlightening.
Talking Saren into killing himself. Just... wow.

I am simply awesturck Escapist, just awestruck. Minecraft's world is estimated to be 8 times the size of the earths, I thought I had colonized a relativly large chunk of it when I decided to venture off into the distance with nothing on me just to recon the sorrunding area near one of my bases. I climbed over the nearest hill top and simply felt my breath leave me. Facing me, sitting there for what must have been miles, was a desert. Infinite and unyeilding, sitting there staring at me. I quietly slipped back down the hill and retreated into my base for the remainder of the day.

So my question to you Escapist, have you ever been simply awestruck by a game? Recount your tales for us.

I must ask you, how the hell do you find your way back to your base? Do you just make a new one? I have these problems all the time.

Shadow of The Colossus, definitely, especially when you come upon the huge lake.

First time I stepped outside the vault in Fallout 3. I mean, it got diminished over time, but that first glance at the desolate landscape... Wow.
This pretty much sums it up for me as well, such a shame that you didn't get that same feeling with New Vegas.

Oh and God of War for the PSP (the first one) just because I was amazed at what they managed to get done with the small machine

Jumping the broken bridge to get to the Gerudo Valley in Ocarina of Time for the first time, it just kicked ass.

Spore.

You think 8x the size of earth is a big deal? spore has over 100 million planets.

The average planet takes around 3 hours of in real time to walk across across the equator.

EDIT: When 343 guilty spark called MC a forerunner caused this reaction, even though we now know that this us not true.

The truth is even more mind blowing.

In test drive unlimited, just driving along an extremely straight, empty desert road in my Trans-Am just felt so good and natural.

Red Dead Redemption. Watching the sun come up over the mountains, slowly lightening the vast plain in front of me. Wow.

Also, when you first enter Mexico after the mission on the river. Beautiful.
HELLZ YES.

Also it's very important to note that in RDR, pretty much everything has a shadow. Every hill, every building, every goddamned cactus, they all have dynamic shadows, which adds so much to the world that it's just amazing.

I have a system of nether gates that all are very near one another in the nether, but lead to several different 10 by 10 skybases, each is set up in just such a way that I can see it from a fair bit away. That and the hill is only a few 30 to 40 blocks from my most recent entrenchment.

A fairly recent game, Just Cause 2.

Casually parachuting around, I get to the top of a nearby mountain and turn around and get punched in the face by this spectacular world.
That game is awesome, I have long missed a grappling hook in games and with a parachute, it only become better. And yes, the world is amazing, I really like the gentlemen's club, that's just casually flies around...

Seeing the first colossus in Shadow of the Colossus. Then climbing it, and staring at everything around me. Birds were circling overhead, the colossus was walking around, trying to get me off.

Just... holy shit that was amazing.
Those eyes haunts me in my nightmares...

Stepping out of the escape pod for the first time at the beginning of the 2nd mission of halo. That's when the game began to be truly great.

Also shadow of the colossus. Nothing in particular, just shadow of the colossus.

A few that jump to mind are...
The backgrounds in Bad Company 2 are amazing... just be careful not to get snipped looking at the scenery.
My first carpet bomb and bunker buster in Mercenaries one.
Many God of War bosses.
The train level of Uncharted 2
And most of MGS 4, the final act especially.

I remember some of the locales in ME 1&2 being beautiful, but the one that sticks out is the wrecked ship on the overhang. Just the ruined-ness of it and the lonely red light blinking in the distance...

The pure epicness of God of War 3 and the beautiful scenery of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.
