That depends... Are you getting one of the first gen PS3's? You know, the ones that were backwards compatible[footnote]CHECB01, CHECA01, CHECEO1[/footnote].

If so, then get Katamari Damacy and We <3 Katamari.
If not, then get a PS2 instead.

*Kombat.

What have you played already? Because that opens up pretty much every multiplat from last gen, which will make things a bit difficult.

HA!! My bad.

We're a PC gaming family, with a lot of strategy and RPG games, which are my favorites. We're getting a PS3 for variety in games and multiplayer stuff that we can play together. We have Mass Effects and Dragon Ages and Skyrim and and other than that... Mostly PC exclusives I think really...

But yes, we're looking for different games and stuff we can play together.

Bayonetta and Vanquish are the best hack & slash and TPS of last gen.

Uncharted 2 and The Last of Us are the 2 must-play Naughty Dog games; Uncharted 1 is just a bad game and Uncharted 3 was really disappointing (very bad story and characters) and there's no overarching story with the Uncharted games.

Perhaps try to get into the Metal Gear Solid series if you haven't already, every game is playable on PS3.

Heavenly Sword is better than God of War 3.

Heavy Rain is a pretty unique experience for the most part.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen has the best action combat of any RPG ever. The big creatures feel like big creatures, you don't kill them by just hacking at their chins and draining their HP bar like most games. The magic is awesome; tornadoes, meteors, etc.

Binary Domain was a lot of fun, starts out kinda slow, has it's flaws but really turns into as much fun as a great sci-fi action flick.

The Batman Arkham games are great (at least the 1st two, I haven't played Origins) if you haven't played them.

Mirror's Edge is probably the best 3D platformer on PS3/360.

FarCry3 Blood Dragon is AWESOME!!!

Mostly all the other great games like Dishonored, Bioschocks, Borderlands, XCOM, Telltale games, etc. are all on PC. Even a few I mentioned I know are on PC as well.

More importantly, it got rid of the post-game skins and spawn-a-gun abilities. I got it free on PS+ and put it down permenently when I learned that. Those were my favorite things about Uncharted 1 and 2.

OT: ModNation Racers is way underrated. If Mario Kart didn't have the brand recognition and MNR had better items, I think it'd be in the running for best kart racer.

Little Big Planet gets a lot of praise, but I'm not a huge fan. You might like it though.

And while it maybe improper to say 'round these parts, any Call of Duty. Playing online gets you screaming 12-14 year-olds, but 4-player split-screen deathmatches are wicked fun. I recommend Black Ops personally. Gotta love that Nuketown.

Well I'll be the first "that guy" and recommend giving demon's souls a try.

Uncharted 3 was a rushed game, a couple weeks before going gold, the game wasn't even working on fat PS3s. Then, Naughty Dog fucks up the aiming and forgets to put in motion blur on the gold version. I hated Uncharted 3 because the writing was horrible, the whole game was trying to give character development to Drake and there's no character development whatsoever as the game reverts to status quo at the end. Sully in Uncharted 2 contradicts Uncharted 3's Sully. The boat chapters make absolutely no sense. The villain is actually good (I should say had lots of potential) but so underused and the game ends like a repeat of Uncharted 2 pretty much. Naughty Dog also has no clue on how to balance multiplayer, the Summer beta of Uncharted 3 was the best MP any Uncharted ever had.

Can you do co-op on Blood Dragon or is it single player only?
It's just single player.

If you like JRPG's I recommend NIS America. (I'm Heavily biased)

Not a game in particular, okay maybe Disgaea, but just NIS in general.

Valkyria Chronicles. It's a strategy rpg, Jim, but not as we know it. Seriously, it's one of the most unique games in the genre and on the PS3 in general.

InFamous and InFamous 2. In case you have an itch for a superhero/villain open world game.

Seeing as you've included a couple HD collections, might I also recommend any the Prince of Persia, Metal Gear Solid and Sly Cooper trilogies as well? Between them and the ones you've already included, you'll have some of the best PS2 games of the era at decent value for money.

Last of Us is also a must-have, and Uncharted 2 to a lesser extent. On the subject of Metal Gear, I would strongly suggest giving Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance a go; you don't need to be a fan of the series to get into it, and it has some really fun hack and slash combat and a kick-ass soundtrack.

The Infamous series sold me on PS3... Ok well they were the first games I had for it (late bloomer). Also Demon's Souls is quite a romp and if you've already played Dark Souls I definitely recommend picking it up. Also invest in Playstation Plus, the longer you have it the more your free digital library stacks up. I've got a shitton of decent games I wouldn't have played otherwise and knowing that I have access to them as long as the service is active is pretty cool. It'll be a sad day for my library when it goes away but then I've already got my money's worth on the service in the amount of games I've played because of Plus. Sucks though that you missed out on a lot of great freebies but then there'll be more coming, remember the shelf-life of the PS2 was well into the last generation so there's that.
Other recommends:

Red Dead Redemption (if you haven't played it, its worth the romp through Rockstar's unique brand of the old west, and a good story to boot)
Hmmm. I know I have more on my list but I can't rightly think of any at the moment to recommend. I'll revisit this thread later when I take inventory of my games.

Demon's Souls gets my vote - it's more Dark Souls than Dark Souls 2. If you are into old-school hardcore Action-RPGs, it's the choice for you.

Bioshock.
Bioshock.
Bioshock.
Did I mention Bioshock?

Seriously, Bioshock is my favorite game ever, and the PS3 version is the best version of it.

There's also LittleBig Planet 2 (it's superior to 1 in every way, so just go with that), Persona 4 (downloadable PS2 game, and easily my favorite RPG ever), Infamous, Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Collection (if you haven't played Kingdom Hearts before, this is a great intro to the series. If you have, then this is the definitive version you should play), and BlazBlue (or if you play Persona 4 and like it, Persona 4 Arena. Don't play arena if you haven't played Persona 4, though).

Check out Demon's Souls. I contemplated buying the system just for that one game. (I did not, but still)

If you are looking for a multiplayer game to play together, Little Big Planet 1 & 2 would be good.

I also recommend uncharted 1-3 to anyone with a Playstation who likes Indiana Jones. And I mean really likes Indiana, not just "1 and 3 were good". 1 and 3 had as much BS in them as 2 and 4 and Uncharted is the same. everyone loves 2 so 1 and 3 are often called lame. But 2 is really good though.

I gotta ask since you have so many collections on your list have you had a PS2 or a PS1 before?

Anyway here are some suggestions

Uncharted 2 and maybe Uncharted 3. Uncharted 1 sucked, Uncharted 2 was AMAZING. Uncharted 3 was good I guess, but nowhere near as good as number 3. You could play 3 first and then 2 if you wanted.

God of War collection. Then God of War 3, then Ascension if you can find it cheap. God of War games have amazing combat. They strike a really good balance of making you feel like a hugely powerful badass and making it feel like a challenge at the same time. They do it better than any other game I've ever played. The combat doesn't really get stale too unless you binge through multiple games.

Infamous 1 and 2 (trust me 2 kicks all sorts of ass, and 1 isn't bad either)

Katamari Forever - Unless you've already played a katamari game and you hated it, get this game, it's a lot of fun and it's a pretty good Katamari sequel

Rathcet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time - if you're going to get any PS3 ratchet and Clank games (other than the collection) get this one. It is one of my all time favorite games in the series. It's really good and it feels like you're playing through a pretty good kids movie. It's fun though even if you don't care about the story.

Twisted Metal (PS3) or Twisted Metal Black (a PS2 game you can buy off PSN). As a fair warning don't expect to play either of these games with online multiplayer. One of them doesn't have it (Black) and the other one was riddled with connection issues since day one, was never entirely fixed and is now mostly abandoned. Still the single player and local multiplayer are good enough to warrant buying them. If you like really dark stories get Black, if you like a ton of options and don't mind putting in extra time to learn how to play get the PS3 one.

Problem is that this gen not a whole lot of local multiplayer games.

But anyway I mentioned Twisted Metal before, that has local multiplayer. Then there's fighting games. The two fighting games I like the most are Soul Calibur and Super Smash Brothers. But Smash brothers are Nintendo exclusives. Sony tried to make a game similar to smash brothers called Playstation All Stars Battle Royale, it's not as good as Smash but it's fun with local multiplayer, especially for casual play (there is depth to it though).

Then there's a game called sportsfriends which you download which I think is fun.

Also I'm not sure if you can get it off PSN or not but my brother and I love the old PS1 kart racer Crash Team Racing.

Seconded. Though it can fall a bit short compared to -say- XCOM, Valkyria Chronicles is still a great game. InFamous never really got me, but InFamous 2 was a great game, I think they really hammered out some of the wrinkles that bugged me about the first one, but the first one is worth playing, especially for the two-pack deal.

I am not a big fan of 7th-gen gaming overall, and I usually use my PS3 for the PSone/two classics, so I can reccomend a few there if you are interested.
