my idea for a game

basically the game is starts of in the future where you face an enemy cyborg muntant alien who is much more powerful than yourself and is intent on destroying the universe, you cannot defeat this enemy and he NEARLY kills you. after you are nearly killed, you come across an old man who gives you an item. this item is a time machine

you must use this time machine to travel through the depths of history inorder to master the art of combat BUT the catch is that you arent allowed to bring any future weapons into the past or the universe will implode. So armed with nothing you start from the begining (the stone age) you learn how to use primitive weapons and you have to fight a mammoth at the end of the stage.

there will be other stages and at each stage you must fight a different boss, eg if you are in the middle ages you will fight a black knight, if its in roman times you will fight a gladitor. other bosses would include samuri/ninja, gengas khan, william wallace, billy the kid etc

after each stage you get an upgrade on your skills depending on how you played. This means that your skills will match your playing style

once you have completed each stage and mastered combat throughout the ages you must defeat the final boss mentioned at the begining

what do you think?

Sounds ok, but everyone will wonder why you couldn't just go back in time and kill the main boss when it was born.

Edit: I also demand a pirate satge.

It sounds kind of like Turtles in time, but I like the new weapon aspect of it. Could it maybe be an action RPG? and you are given choices as to what you can master in each time period (lots of variation in choice and once you pick to master something you have to stick with it)?

That as well will need to be explained.

that would be what you find out at the end of the game, like a secret for completing

A mutated cyborg alien?

Not to be mean, but is he also a terrorist?
And why is he destroying the universe, please note that: "Shits and giggles" or "He's crazy because he's a mutant cyborg" won't work.

It's sort of... Eh.

I like the idea of working your way up through the ages, learning combat styles from each time period. Maybe there could be a feature pointing out the effect you're having on history? Even if you're doing your best to prevent time paradoxes, historians are bound to notice one person who seems to show up in every age to master combat.

I think that this could work.

But please don't make the main character just another muscle-totting thickie.

Also, do you actually plan to make this?

Reminds me loosely of Shadow of Destiny, only you're preventing your own death in that. Still, sounds good.

I think it's a pretty good idea, but we're already getting a game close to that. I forget the name, but you fight Romans and stuff throughout history with futuristic guns.
I like the idea of not having anything to fight with and using what's in that time and place to battle.

Though like Cpt_Oblivious, we need some pirates.

I'm not a fan.
Besides the fact that other have pointed out that idea of going back in time to kill the alien as he is born (Or even killing his parents or something), it otherwise seems spread too thin over too much. Start at the stone age? Working all the way to the modern eras? That's a lot of time to cover, especially when it sounds pretty repetitive:

- Go to new time
- Learn new skills
- Fight boss
- Repeat

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for new ideas for games and the like. But they have to be fleshed out, and really put to scrutiny. I just don't think that, over all, this'd hold up.

Try being a bit simpler. Less is more in some cases.
For example: Say the game is set in a specific time...something interesting and relatively untouched...say ancient China (Yes, it has been done, but not recently as far as I can remember). Now do a similar scenario: You fight a guy who comes and destroys your gym and family and nearly kills you. Bent on revenge, you explore the lands searching for other martial arts teachers to train you so that you can best this evil villain. The whole game could be massive sandbox, third person exploration (Think Assassin's creed) with horseback riding (And combat), weapons training, hand-to-hand martial arts, stealth tactics, and even use of gunpowder (Since the Chinese basically invented it). Plus this can all be happening in a dynamic world of feuds between different warlords (Like the different factions in Mercenaries...only double crossing and working with both would be much harder with real consequences).

I'd play it.

the main character obviously isnt just a muscle-totting thickie (unless you want to develop that sort of skill), more than likly hes gonna be a clever guy that has to work his way from the ground up. it would be better if the main character was customisable, eg you get a big muscly guy if you want to fight with big ass flaming axes and a little sneaky guy if you want a ninja style

i dont plan on making this as i have no clue how to make a game, i can make a quiz on true basic and could probably make a game based on quicktime events in visual basic but thats about it.

i just thought of it as an IDEA for a game, i thought it seemed pretty decent

Interesting, but as Baby Tea pointed out, it sounds like it could easily become an exercise in repetition.

A mutated, cyborg alien that employs fear as a means to manipulate people.

So generic it just might work!

i dont think so, each stage would be different. for example in the middle ages you will be storming castles, as a ninja you will be going stealthy and as a gladiator you will have intense close combat fights in small colluseum

but the stages should give the feeling of freedom eg in ancient japan you can choose to be a ninja and go stealthy or can can choose to be a samuri and slash'n'dash, in roman times you can choose different loadouts for your gladiator with alot of different weapons, in the middle ages you can choose archery or a knight etc

i dont think it would be repetitive

It's certainly an interesting idea but time travel is always a tricky subject to tackle in a story. For instance, don't you think it would change history if you were having epic battles against all these historical figures (as OP said, Genghis Khan, William Wallace, Billy the Kid, etc.)

Well, I like the idea, it'll be a hard sell of "Play in the Stone age" when I know mamoth has like a million hit points and I all can do it piss it off. But otheer wise it's sounds fun.
