So I recently started playing final fantasy 13 about 4 hours in i'm having a great time. Then the party splits up because they're too different so i cope with it go through that for 2 hours then everyone is back together again. Now they split up again. I am told they are going to keep splitting up until chapter 10 so i have how many hours of gameplay before i can play the characters i want to? It's incredibly frustrating that they split up so often and i end up having to play a character i don't want to play for at least an hour. I understand they have large differences but can I get a choice in the matter before i pull my hair out?! The game is fun I like the game but I am so tired of being forced to split up over and over again. Along with this I am still almost completely in the dark as far as the story goes and i have yet to find any city or "outpost". This feels like an incredibly long tutorial and my patience is wearing thin. Is there Anyone here who share's my pain?

I've been sharing the pain since final fantasy VIII. Theres always been incredibly frustrating things all over the place in the FF games, IMO- the developers should begin writing movies rather than games, because the story has always stood out way past any of the gameplay.

My brother got his full party in the non-linear section in about 19 hours, I ground out a bit and took my time and go to the same section in 25 hours.

And yeah, losing Lightning repeatedly did kinda suck, but it does allow for more personalised characterisation so that was nice.

Still I don't believe I need what I consider the longest tutorial ever made. Characterization is all fine and good but not when it stops the player from having fun.

It was a bit too restricted at times that it got on my nerves a bit. But I'm about 30 hours into it now since the battle system is awesome, the story, IMO, is excellent and the characters are just as good (how the hell did I end up liking Hope and Vanille?)

I like Vanille however i do not like Hope.(please tell me he mans up later on) Still this is ridiculous it shouldn't take 10 chapters and 2 discs to choose my own character -.-'.

Hope gets a lot better later on in the game. But that's pretty far off unfortunately.

I did hate the party splitting up a lot but it wasn't really that bad. The parts I disliked the most were the Sazh and Vanille parts. I just found them incredibly annoying.

You know, the same sort of party splitting and separate storylines figured prominently in what many consider the best FF game made, Final Fantasy 6...

This sort of thing isn't anything new for FF.

The entire FF4 game was the game picking which characters would be in your party from beginning to end.

Stop the Hope hate! I just did a meta on lj on how people unfairly think Hope is 'whiny'.
If you have to hate anyone, hate Snow!

It is more of a matter of opinion i never liked those versions of ff and will always prefer 9. Regardless this made me rip my hair out and it seemed to be entirely caused by the main character thinking she is too good for everyone else. It is a fantasy game as long as it makes sense the characters shouldn't have to split up every 5 seconds so i can continue on with my tutorial while riding my 1way monorail to the rubber forest.(linear metaphor for whoever missed that)

I actually really liked that Lightning was so badass and independent. Made a nice change from Squall, Vaan and Tidus.

Zidane's still the most badass though, since his entire reason for going along with it in the first place was "Get into Garnet's panties."

Also he was a ninja with a monkey tail.

He's rarely opened his mouth to do anything but shout "Why me?!" or groan patheticly. That said, if I could throw any of the characters into a raging fire it would be Snow.

Because we all know losing your fiance to your most sworn enemy then being put on what is existentially a death sentence sure wouldn't affect you negatively. Hope lost his mother but he was a snotty coward to begin with he is getting better though thankfully. Lightning is starting to grow on me now that she shows signs of having a soul.

I share your pain. I hate that they keep splitting us up every which way.

However, I see their reasoning. They want you to learn the specific details of each character at a slower 2-person pace, rather than 3-person chaos. I see their point, but I think I could figure this out on my own without the training wheels.

Btw, I hated Hope too, but he grows some stones at around Chapter 7 (roughly 6-8 hours in).

Still loathe Vanille though:(

Interesting. i'm about 8 hours into the game, and i was thinking about how most of the tutorials were short and quick, when compared to some other final fantasy games. I just liked how they only showed what was really noteworthy, and left most of the complex stuff up to the player to figure out.

Even though it's still my favorite final fantasy, there are tutorials in FFVIII that are literally 20 minutes long if you take the time to read it all, then there's like 6 tutorials just like it, for other parts of the game. they had this bad habit of explaining every single little damn tidbit about a feature or system in the game, including all of the really complex shit that you wouldn't use until a few hour later, and would have forgotten by then.

Once Vanille learns Death, all is forgiven.

I'm not all smiles and sunshine!
Let's go, Hecaton!
Bring out the big guns!
*orgasm*

I like the last one the best. The only way Square could have been more suggestive is if all of Hecaton's tentacles ended with penises.

I actually lost the first battle where I used that cause I was laughing so hard.

Personally what I hated was the Upgrade system, I don't care if i have to spend 5 hours grinding out exp to kill off some super hard boss for the best weapons in the game, but don't sit there and tell me that if I want the best stuff, I have to spend umpteen gazillion gil for each character just to get stuff up to par [And in general, the gil is way, way harder to get than CP]

The upgrade system is rather tedious. Hey just got the best weapon in the game. But its only good if you upgrade it to level 99999999! Which reminds me I am still using my gladius level 12 because it is actaully better by 90 strength when compared to the edged carbine i just got.
