First off, I feel that it is necessary to state that I love Game Grumps, both the EgoJon series and the EgoDanny series (and before you ask, yes, I have watch a few episodes of Steam Train and some episodes of Steam Rolled).

I watch it cardinally and the humor and wit produced by the group of talented individuals is both fun and enlightening. I love how they can both derive entertainment from the content that they are playing and completely digress from content and develop unique and hilarious material.

With that said, I feel that they have been lacking one key element that, I believe, is essential for every gamer to have/retain or have for some reason have been unable to conjure up: the sense of child-like wonder.

Furthermore, the sense of playing a new game, regardless of it's content and being excited about it while later making assumptions about the gameplay and the level of fun derived from it, are completely absent. Many of you might attribute this to 'they are playing an uninteresting, broken, joyless title; what do you expect?' I get that, and there have been plenty of games where that was the case. What I mean is that they tend to derive their sense of enjoyment and focus to a game based solely on whether they are interested in playing the game or not.

Imagine if Game Grumps played Vector Man: a gem in the Sega Genesis library about a polygon robot compose of balls, hands, and feet that shoots stars, can upgrade to other forms of shots, can shape shift, and has various endearing catchphrases and comical effects.

Arin, being a huge Megaman X fan, might write this game off as being slightly better than the Classic Megaman series, no where near as memorable or endearing as the Megaman X series, and solely a precursor for the Mighty No. 9 title that will be released in the future.

I hope that I'm wrong and that they get to both play and enjoy Vector Man in a future Game Grumps episode, but I really don't see it happening.

So Escapists, what do you think?

1.) Do you believe that Game Grumps has lost their sense of child-like wonder towards new and unknown titles that directly effects them enjoying new titles?

2.) Have you lost your sense of child-like wonder and it has caused you to ignore certain titles because you don't find them interesting, engaging, or within your particular sensibilities?

They're playing Kirby's Epic Yarn.

Have you seen them play that game?

If that ain't childlike wonder, I don't know what else to tell you.

I'm entirely indifferent about Game Grumps. I haven't watched a single episode from them and I have no plans to. I'm content to watch Game Theory and Jared.

My one real problem with them, mainly with Egoraptor, is how he seems to have a stance against tutorials, so as a result, he and Jon would skip a bunch of stuff that would teach them how to play the game and they would end up just going around confused and unsure of what to do. Their Glover videos for example.

His philosophy might work for more simple and self explanatory games like Mario or Megaman, but for more complex and intricate games, I don't think there's any shame in using something that teaches you the basics of the game.

Besides that, I haven't watched them much as of late. Their Civilization videos were pretty damn funny though. Especially at the end.

I personally think their problem is they have done hundreds of these videos daily and it's starting to wear on them. I mean, considering how many of these videos they've done, it's still pretty impressive just how funny I find them and how their quality has pretty much stayed leveled.

They have a problem with paying attention though, but that's just part of trying to continuously keep talking about something. Sometime their skipping over tutorials can lead to some entertainment, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't find it frustrating to watch them fail at something so simple (to me or anyone else that would read for 5 seconds).

But really, it's something I like to watch to pass the time. I just don't see their "child-like" wonder dwindling that much. Seems pretty similar to me. Danny certainly mixed that up a bit though, he seems to keep Arin from going silent at times. As long as it's obvious that they are enjoying what they do, then I'll continue to enjoy watching their videos.

I feel like they still operate the way they always have with most new series they play. I like that Arin and Danny focus more on the game now and not just talking about random stuff. They show their child like wonder when they play older games they played as kids for sure. This is probably why Danny's first few series were so fun since he would reminisce about playing those games(Mario 2, Punch Out, Out of this World) as a kid.

For me, it's hard to say, I get the most enjoyment from games by replaying my favorites constantly. For those I still have child-like wonder for sure. For newer unknown titles, it depends how much I'm enjoying myself while playing them.

Egoraptor is arguably the greatest flash animator ever artistically, and he's effectively taken a break from that in exchange for making jokes while playing games. Game Grumps is decent but it's nowhere near as valuable in any sense as Egoraptor's animations - Arin is betraying his art in favor of sheer fucking greed.

The reason for Game Grumps is cashing in, otherwise known as selling out - animations take a while to make and can only be produced every couple months, while several Game Grumps videos per day are produced. This means a great boost in Youtube revenue for Mr. Hanson.

Selling out is nothing new of course, but for an artist of Hanson's ability to do so is very disappointing. I suppose his reply would be "my bank account is not disappointed".

I don't think so. I mean, most of Skyblazer was them going "Holy shit this game is awesome, why have we never heard of this before?" And most of Epic Yarn is them swooning over how cute everything is.

I only have two minor annoyances; that they're a little too mean to Ross (I know it's all in good fun, but still, it kind of brings down the mood) and that they only update Epic Yarn and Sunshine lately. I kind of got bored with those a few episodes in. IMHO, since they release two videos a day, they should publish a one-off or short series, and alternate between episodes of a long series. (For example, Sunshine on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and Epic Yarn on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Sunday is the wild card.)

Also, don't you DARE say Vectorman is better than Mega Man classic. Them's fightin' words.

I like it when they say the most dirtiest things while the cheerful music from the game is playing in the background... (Don't judge me?)

OT: I didn't think Game Grumps NEEDED child-like wonder... I do believe that they should stay more positive on some of their more one-off series... I mean, I get the game you guys are playing is "bad", but you don't have to hammer that statement in every chance you get... no matter how "clever" you joke about it...

I feel the only one that even has a sense of child-like wonder throughout is Ross from Steam Train... although, there have been a "few" close calls... (I almost called him the next Jon of Game Grumps... the Jon during their still-incomplete Sonic '06 run, I mean... and I still don't know how I came to that conclusion...)

On the other question... Yeah... I'm still a child trapped in a young adult's body... (Come at me, maturity...)

Overall, I only watch it for Egoraptor... and if they start playing Kingdom Hearts, that's when my friend (who was only watched Game Grumps for JonTron) will start watching them again...

We have to note though that they seem to just do huge sessions of games at a time (with maybe short breaks between the ending of one episode and the start of the next), so they probably aren't at the games every single day. Plus it sounds like Arin and Jon had plenty of extra footage and games that they never released (and considering Jon's departure, they probably never will). Point is, I doubt the gaming is really wearing on them until later parts of any single session (I recall them mentioning being awake for Game Grumps late into the night during some semi-recent Super Mario Sunshine episodes).

Anyway, I'm not sure I see the lack of childlike wonder or whatever you're getting at. They seem to be having a good time with games like Kirby's Epic Yarn and Skyblazer.

But I do have to agree with some of the complaints here. It's mostly Arin, but they often seem to totally disregard tutorials and then complain that the game is unclear. And then Arin totally ignores what he main a long, ranting Sequelitis about and he fails to experiment at all.

Also, I have to agree that it seems like the main grumps have only been uploading Super Mario Sunshine and Kirby's Epic Yarn lately. I do like the Kirby's Epic Yarn episodes, but the Mario ones aren't quite as good. I am having fun with Steam Train though.

They need more Barry tho.

I find the whole "Let's play" video genre odd... I mean you're watching people play video games and dick around... When you could be playing video games and dicking around.

Sounds like someone should be watching JSmithOTI.

My one issue with Game Grumps, though? I miss the pure, unadulterated friendship that was so evident between Jon and Arin. I know it can't be helped, but I was watching some best-ofs and fanimations last night. And it just really opened my eyes to how different the dynamic between Arin and Danny is.

Arin puts a lot of effort into his animations. He doesn't release them until he's happy with them. Jon is the same way with JonTron. A creative work cannot be rushed.

Have Arin's animations become less frequent since Game Grumps? Yes. Were they ever frequent to begin with? Not that I can recall. So I'm not sure what you expected.

He doesn't have to rely on his animation anymore, which means he can take his time to create something that he's truly proud of. And I think that's great.

I just wish they would refrain from bringing up gross-out topics so often. Some of us like to eat our meals when watching, you know.

I agree with this entirely. I watch game grumps and it feels like Arin and Danny are doing a job, they are sitting down to play a game for my entertainment and thats the purpose of the video. I know thats what they ARE doing but im so aware of it constantly. Jon and Arin felt like i was watching the snapshot of a friendship that was so alive. It felt more like i was just a spectator to something that was organic and would happen naturally rather than them creating enjoyment just so i can watch. The sonic adventure episode where knuckles goes into a wall will always make me laugh.

I will admit though Danny and Ego are funny. The whole spiniker skit is pretty freaking hilarious. But its more like watching comedians perform together in an act as opposed to two best friends just naturally create comedy from one another.

Yeah. Jon and Arin was like hanging out with great friends.

Arin and Danny is like watching an improv performance. Which is by no means a bad thing, but it is very different.

Eh I'm still kinda against the whole game grumps with the new guy cause it isn't john and ego but ya near the end of that time you can start to see it being more of a job and not fun having to play enough to have a vid or two to upload a day.

Honestly tho they should have called it something else ;p

Sorry I migrated over to game grumps because of Jon Tron... I ...watch it when I'm really struggling for content to play while I'm working on something but... it's not really my thing anymore. Ego while a talented animator and actor and I really look up to him in that field... isn't...dynamic enough...often enough, understandable since I couldn't put forth that much energy consistently either. Jon played off his personality really well and was the dominant persona in my eyes, now it's kinda ...reversed and I don't find myself as engaged in ...Danny is it? See can't even get his name (sorry I'm sure he's a lovely person).

Can't explain it, Game Grumps had a tendency to have moments where I got exasperated with it even WHEN Jon was around.
There was a video where they rambled on about goddamn nothing for 7 minutes and I just turned it off, and I'm glad to hear they've steered off of that, but... yeah it's not something I watch with any regularity now.

I'm with Daystar on this.

I am annoyed at the current series because they don't play enough terrible games.

Also because Sonic '06 is now lost to the eternal void.

That series was so goddamn awesome.
