That was my first thought.
As was mine. But seriously. Imagine you have to push a button and there was a 10-20% you die, would ANY kind of reward convicne you to push it? Any at all? Its a tough question.

OP im so sorry for you. This sucks. I hope you're ok no matter what option you take. Im the same age as you and i cant imagine this happening to me or someone i know. I would take the surgery. I did research on transplant surgury for a debate competition and theres a few things i found out. Lists. Are. LONG. Organs only last 10-20 years from a dead doner and double that for live. However a live heart doner isnt going to happen.

Could the surgery be a permenant fix? Is it 100% unexplored waters? Have studies been done, meetings on predicitions of such a test? Peer review? Is this one doctor throwing a radical idea out there? I would ask further questions.

Transplant, Thats what I would do, and what you would do if I were you... if that last part makes sense...

also, this doesnt seems like a question that I would ask a bunch of anons on the internet.
Well as it is possibly the last decision I might be making, Opinions are comforting coming from anywhere.

Yeah, I can see that being true. Good luck, hope everything turns out well, what ever decision you make.

Okay, I have a rather serious decision to make and I'd like to hear some opinions from other people.
I have a rather serious medical condition; all four of my heart valves are failing. I have two options of what I can do:

Option one is a heart transplant. However, right now, for reasons that baffle doctors, I am in good condition. So I would actually have to wait until my heart deteriorates and then transplant it. There is no telling how long that will take but it will happen sooner or later. After this it's sink or swim. Worst case scenario I don't even make the first year. Best case scenario is 5-15 years. I'm 16 right now and forgive me if I'm a little selfish, but my twenties aren't exactly the time when I want to die.

Option two: I have found a surgeon that is willing to perform a rather risky surgery to repair all four valves at once. As you can imagine this is extremely risky and there is no telling what (if any) benefits I will get from it. I could possibly get a very good amount of years, maybe better than that of a transplant, but since the surgery has never before been performed, there is absolutely no way of telling.

So, what do the escapists think? The proposed mortality rate for the risky surgery is 10%-20%. I can take a gamble with the surgery or just take the transplant and be happy with whatever I get. Think of it from both my point of view and from a 3rd person perspective of the situation.
Dude, what the fuck is wrong with you? Why are you trying to get serious medical advice from a gaming site where I doubt even 5% of the people here have any decent medical knowledge. Discuss this with your family and go talk to some actual doctors about this before listening to some idiot on this site gets you killed.

Thats just for straight up die on the table. There is no way of telling what will happen even if the surgery is successful. The heart could not restart or the valves could fail again.
Yees, this does make it seem much less attractive.

Flip a coin. Heads, the transplant.
How do you feel now? If you don't like what the coin has told you to do, do the other one.

I'm asking for situational opinions, not medical advice. Calm down.

Wow, that's harsh... I don't want to say anything, though. I think this is something that only you can decide.
I agree. This is something that you should discuss with your family. Best of luck with whatever option you choose and I hope it all goes well for you.

Sorry to hear this mate, I hope you make it through ok!
My $0.02: the transplant seems saver, but you should keep the possible complications in mind; rejection, difficulty obtaining a matching heart, infection, and the limited time you'll get from this. Now the second one...are you willing to play russian roulette? 10-20% chance of mortality during surgery is about equal to that of holding a 6-chamber revolver to your head with one bullet and pulling the trigger. There is no guarantee of you having a full life after it, and it hasn't been performed before. Are you an altruist? If so, take the second option. If you die (gods forbid), at least something can be learned from the surgery. If you make it through, other people will benefit from the subsequent research. I'll be honest, prototypes rarely work, but they can and will be perfected. If you are willing to risk your life (incidentally, you'd be a bigger man than I could ever hope to be) for the benefit of others, do the surgery.
Best of luck!

It's still pretty dumb to ask random strangers about something that concerns your own mortality. Talk to your family and friends about this, not some random forum.

Wow, tough break man. I thought losing all my hair at 16 was tough but wow, I really can't complain. Anyway, as much as I want to help, this is not something I think that random internet peoples can help with. It's going to have to be your choice in what you do. Sorry Tis a lame answer but as I say, I wish I could help but I'm just not sure what help I can offer.

I know a couple of people that have lived relatively normal lives with multiple heart transplants. They both died in their forties, but up until then they had good jobs (a teacher and a nurse), happy lives, spouses, kids ... I don't know. Doctors have been doing heart transplants for decades now. They're pretty good at it. If I were selfish I'd get a transplant. If I were selfless I'd get the experimental surgery. Just remember, experimental surgery is just that, experimental. There are so few people that have received it that NO ONE can say how likely it is to be successful. We don't fully understand our bodies yet - all surgeries were experimental once, and most of them ended up failing.

I don't really know if I should tell you what to do. I mean it's your life we're talking about. If you want to risk it that's fine, but I don't feel right telling you to go the more dangerous road.

If I were you I'd go with second option. If the doctor (or surgeon, whatever) is confident in his skill and so long as it doesn't kill you right there you might be able to go back to option #1 if things start fucking up again in the future.

Still though ultimately its your choice and your life. Either way I hope you make it through it fine.

...Damn though your avatar can get distracting. It's just sitting up there while I type, bobbing up and down, up and down...

Being who I am, and if I were in your position, I'd go for the risky surgery. Heart transplant at 16 will really ruin whats left of your life, and you wont have that much time anyways. With the surgery you may end up with a full and healthy life, a marginally increased life, or death. The final option hopefully will not be painful, and we all die eventually anyway.

This is a hard decision and I can totally see why the safer route seems the way to go, but if I were you I'd go for the surgery.

I personally would take the surgery, transplants have very serious downsides like not guarantee of acceptance, the heart only lasting a decade or so, having someone else's heart in you (I like mine).

Personally id say option 2, I Almost died earlier this year myself personally. (My colon ruptured) they was experimenting with a new way to check inside me and attempt to repair and repair if possible which i opted for. the possibility of helping others even if i didnt make it crossed my mind and was a large part of my choice.

Which ever ya choose mate I wish you the best of luck, you got some hard times ahead of ya but keep ya family and close friends close and you will do ok.

Edit: In the end my colon was that badly infected and damaged I had to have 70cm of it removed from me :(
