My Problem With Licensed Music in Games

Is it necessary for gaming developers or publishers to pay for licensed music and then muffle it underneath every other sound in the game? Notably whit EA games such as Burnout and Skate, you have a licensed soundtrack (almost universally full of shit music) that you can't hear in game. Hell, Burnout Paradise even has a vehicle that muffles the music even more. And if you want to play the music on you console in-game it sounds even worse.

Another problem I have is with Codemasters. Really? You have all this licenses music and it doesn't play in-game? Sure, we have Queens of the Stone Age on the soundtrack list. But it only plays in the pit area/lobby.

Go fuck yourself. You wonder why you're losing money. It's because you don't use your resources properly.

Anyway, that's just my issue with it. Anybody have a problem with it how licensed music is used in games?

There are usually sliders in the options menu that adjust the volume of these things.

I don't really care one way or the other. When it's great, it's great. (The Tony Hawk series) When it's not, well...it's really not. (Prey. You could shuffle through about 20 songs...at the jukebox in the bar at the start you don't spend more than 10 minutes in.)

I had a feeling someone would give a response this stupid.
Your opening post isn't exactly the pinnacle of intelligence and thought provocation. Those in glass houses should not throw poop, or something like that.

This just seems like a rant to me.
On a lighter note, I like the music they used in Burnout 2, how the bass and melody were jacked up a notch when you used your boost. Thems were the days.

The discussion is about the lack of discussion, the fact that this is a rant, and that you complained about a perfectly good reply.

"You lack discussion, this is merely a rant, and the first reply was perfectly fine and you had no need to complain about it"

Job well done Zero, job well done.

On a different note that is still about the same thing more or less: I could hear the music in Burnout Paradise just fine, if you couldn't hear it, maybe you should of complained less and lowered the SFX volume more.

Oh yeah, and have a 'Appy day.

Damn kids and their licensed music games. In my day we hummed along to the green hill zone tune or the Super Mario invincibility theme.

Wow.
I've seen stupid responses before...Well, lets not get into that.
Every time I want to hear good music in a game, for instance GTA IV, I turn down the main volume and turn up the music volume...
Guess what...Problem solved!!!
As for games that don't use the music during play, well I agree with you that it's a waste of resources...

They can get away with wasting cash on licenses for big songs really, even doing then I bet the sound budget is nothing compared to the visuals budget. Heck it's probably cheaper than making their own stuff.

Depends what it is I think, like anything else really. Prince of Persia Warrior Within made my ears bleed. Some games have actually been a good opportunity to find music I wouldn't have been exposed to otherwise. And then games like Brutal Legend they're even a pretty big part of it. Admittedly, I've always been a metal fan, but BL is a game I'll leave on just for the soundtrack while I'm working on something else.

Oh, one more thought. Best use of licensed music in a game=Fallout 3. Nothing like getting a slow motion of a super mutant's head blowing up with Billy Holiday playing in the background.

Cruising around while listening to the reggae station in GTA IV was sweet. Then I go downtown in real life to see a reggae band and get drunk and have a hippie chick grind on me. Oh, inspiration..every game should have Bob Marley.

So you bought games just to listen to the music?

I play games for the experience and even a hint of the proper music just amplifies that.
