Would he be able to buy a used PS3 & just swap hard drives?

Would he have to find the exact same model PS3 to do that with?

Sigh... Well, I loaded up RD:R for the last time yesterday, not that I knew that... the power light flashed yellow, then started blinking red.... Now it won't stay on long enough to even remove the game disc.

According to the Sony support hot line, there's nothing I can do without voiding the warranty, and I doubt I have the skill to fix it even if I was willing to do that. It will cost $150 if I want it fixed, money I don't have. Honestly, I don't mind a gaming hiatus; I've lived without my games before. But I had at least 2,000 hours of game saves on that system, everything I've played in the last two years plus years of PS2 saves. There is no way to recover that data.

It's like... I've spent years painting little ceramic unicorns -- each one unique. Tedious, but ultimately rewarding. Some had racing stripes, some were dressed like a bdsm slave and were swinging a horn twice the length of it's body, and some seemed to simply be covered in blood. Then a bomb exploded, destroying them all and burning my hands so that I have to pay some ****** to fix them before I can attempt to rebuild my shattered collection... [/tortured metaphor]

....

Fuck, I don't know, have any condolences? Advice? Anecdotes?

...Life is cruel.
Sorry dude... but All is not lost. I don't really know what's the yellow light mean but if your hardrive isn't fried, you haven't lost anything yet.
Yellow lights are a warning. After the yellow light comes the red light, which means the PS3 is broken. When you get a green light it means you can drive.
So he might not have lost anything. I know that there's a code for the X360 with the frontal light.

Hi there, I've owned, played, and generally abused a 360 for around four years now and it works great.

I'm savoring this moment.
I've done nothing to ruin my 360's and I've gone through 3 in 4 years. Don't come in here and say that when this guy's whole gaming career just went out the window.

Summerof2010, I guess you'll have to remember the moments you had. There shouldn't be any problem playing through games again. If they were fun before and you spent all that time with them, they should be fun again.

DGN: HAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHA-oh *ahem* Don't worry man. Same thing happened to me. I'm sure you can get it fixed somehow......hopefully without wasting 150$. Pardon the maniacal laughter. I enjoy laughing at other people's expense. Sorry. :)

That's uncalled for... if it were your 360, you'll be cussing like it the only word you know.
I know. On the other hand, if I did and made a thread about it, I'd probably get a number of responses to the tune of "Tough shit, failure rate, blah blah."

I have nothing against this guy and utterly sympathize with him, but I can't help but think it's a bit funny. It goes with the pleasure of owning the one utterly indestructible 360 on earth. I mean, I seriously put that thing through it's paces.
Well, i can understand the Irony... but that's Sh*t no matter the console. If Microsoft is dumb enough to make the XboX360 that way, that's their fault. You shouldn't have to stop gaming because your console has a major defect.

*Villain Hand Rub* Mwahaha. What he has experienced is known as the "Yellow Light of Death" it is the PS3's version of the RROD except that it's much more lethal than it's Xbox counterpart. This is just...so...beautiful *tear*

Sorry for being an asshat but this has proved many a people I dislike wrong.

I'll make it up to you with this.

Go back to your bridge, you shall not post here Troll.

1) Congratulations on being the tenth fucking quote I got on this thread.
2) Wait. My choice in console means I should stop gaming? And you said I was uncalled for!
2B) In case you meant to type "shouldn't" and typo'd, I agree. If your system dies on you that sucks, no matter what.

Remove the Hard Drive for one. You can do that without voiding the warrenty. (If I am wrong, now would be a good time for someone to point it out.) That way you still have your data.

My Xbox broke once. Right after the Halo 3 beta actually. Weird really, it was only on for the entirty of the beta plus an extra week so I could play offline custom games. You would think I pushed it to hard or something. Luckly I had a waranty, so I can't really relate.

Lol, holy crap, Major Buzzkill man.

The OP is hardly being whiney about his situation. He's just upset that it happened. Understandable. I've seen a lot worse threads where people complain about the stupidest shit like its the end of the world, and this isn't one of them. He's allowed to be upset over it. I hardly think he feels like its the worst thing in the world though, from the tone of his post.

Sry fer yer loss though.

If I send it in, it comes back with the hard-drive formatted. If I try to put it in another system it'll have to format it before I can access it. It won't stay on long enough for me to back it up. Yes, the data still exists, but there's just no way to access it...
Depend where you send it. There are Sony's Certify place that won't just send you a clean PS3. I would go ask around or seek repair center that are certify that can do it without cleaning the hard-drive. It's a bit of work. Also, there are Saved Game data running around the net so if it come to this, you may find replacement. If all else fail, you may ask if you may ask them if they can back up the data themselves. It's not much, but it's worth a shot at least.

I'm a 360 owner, not a PS3 owner, but you've got my sympathy OP. MS invalidated my gamertag pre-NXE because I didn't waste my time with their email service. So anything I wanted to do online was out, and the only thing they offered was, and I'm quoting "oh well, what can you do about it?"

I started over, now my gamerscore, saves, everything I'd done I redid them, and I did them better. It was an opportunity to relive some of my favorite games all over again...and again.... you get the idea.

At first it pissed me off, but now I'm cool with it, though I wish I could get my old gamertag name again, apparently that is impossible.

As for the hardware, if it's going to cost money, why even have a warranty on it in the first place? I've got a first run Core model with a drive that may or may not open on command, it freezes up during games, will tell me that I need to put my xbox 360 game in a xbox 360 to play it (lol), and it rumbles to life like a Mac truck whenever I want to play. People ask me what the hell is going on sometimes when I've paused a game to answer the phone because the thing sounds like a Harrier about to take off. Still, the ugly little console still works. So much for that bullet...

*knocks on wood*

My brother's Pokemon Blue died and with it the love of his life, his level 99 Blastoise.
