My PS3 just stopped reading all discs. Win baked goods!

Two months ago for no reason my baby (my ps3) stopped acknowledging all forms of discs. Game discs, blue rays, burned discs . . . you get the idea. I have two updates since then with no change. I have been on countless forums looking for answers with no help. I have shamelessly flirted with tech support to try and get some answers and finally one guy was nice enough to tell me this, "Look we really aren't suppose to say this but . . . they really can make a nice paperweight if you paint them right."

I REFUSE to accept this. I am not rich right now and I love to game. G.A.M.E.R That's me. I am putting this on the forums because I have total faith that there are plenty of smarter people out there than I. (That's not hard *smirk*) Use your superpowers people! Don't let her die on me yet!

Ah! Yes. The win baked goods. I know most people need a cattle prod to get out of bed in the morning and I am asking others to fix MY problem for me. So, for whoever solves my problem (and yes she has to be fixed, if she has to be buried six feet under then sorry no prize) I will pre-pay for a dozen cookies, muffins or whatever baked goods you desire at the Starbucks, Tim Horton's or whatever place you WANT me to order the goods for at that is NOT your house. (Privacy here people. I read the forum rules as closely as I could and I THINK this will work. *fingers crossed*)

In any case, my PS3 controller died from trying to clean it with a touch of water...

Ridiculous, the PS3 has always given me troubles, my first one died a month after it came out next to my original 360 that lasts for 5 years with no errors.

Just offer money or a gift card or something works better.

Crazy as it sounds, have you tried cleaning the thing with a CD laser cleaner?

The deleted sounds right. It's either the laser, or the disc gear. If it's the disc gear you won't hear the disc move at all when you put it in. Either that, or there is a software issue I.E. bios corruption and that's just impossible to fix.

Hi! I noticed your thread and though I may have some idea that could help if your PS3 is out of warranty. But first I need to know what model of PS3 you happen to have. If you look on the back by the fan inlet it should have a model number (http://us.playstation.com/csimg/PS3/kbid_362/ps3_serialnumber.gif). Also what does the PS3 do when you try to insert a disk? Can you hear the drive spin up to read it? Will it even load disks at all?

In general the PS3's BD-ROM drive uses a mechanical feeding system to load disks. However with age and use this can cause the laser diode to get contaminated/out of alignment causing disk read errors. Best case scenario a cleaning disk will do the trick. Worst case your PS3 needs a new BD-ROM drive.

Seriously though, that wouldn't cause the problem he's having, it would just cause overheating.

It sounds like it's a problem with the laser, and that's really not a problem that you'll be able to realistically fix on your own. Sorry to tell you this buddy, but your PS3 is pretty much dead, unless you're willing to part with $100 to get Sony to fix it out of warranty. Regardless of how many cookies you're offering, that simple fact will not change.

Second, after reading the forums I don't think I can offer money or gift cards bc gift cards are really just money. I know it's strange but hey. We all know what everyone really would want *wink wink nudge nudge* but I'm not getting banned for getting everyone an hour of with one of those people. You know. . . . massage therapist. Yes.

It does nothing at all when I put in a disc. Wait. I just put one in and that is a small lie. I do get a disc symbol but nothing happens. Let me answer two other people and then I will look on the back for your model number. Thanks.

HA. I get it now. I was going to say that I use my PS3 day and night so . . . but "dusk" I get it. But also, ahem. . . I am not a man. Does that somehow affect how my PS3 works? Maybe it is offended by my estrogen.

Short of finding someone who can tell you how to take it apart and fix it by replacing the drive or whatever went bad, your best bet is still Sony.

No. I have not. The Cd's are not moving at all. SO, would that help at all?

OK well then I'd say it sounds like either the BD-ROM drive is dead or the PS3's Motherboard it's self is damaged. Sony will try to fix it for 100$, but if you have experience building PC's or working with electronics you could try to buy a BD drive al-a ebay and install it yourself. The BD-ROM's usually go for 70$ and working motherboards for about 150$ish. So no matter what way you go your going to have to spend some money on this.

NOTE: If you try to replace the drive yourself you MUST get the correct model of BD drive or your motherboard WILL NOT see the drive.

My ps3 died this way too...maybe you should see if your local games store will accept it as part of a trade-in (I did this with mine).

I had this happen to me on my old 40 gig PS3. My laser died completely. It would be like...$75 to get a new laser and install it myself or $130 or so for Sony to fix it, since it was out of warranty. I was told it was because of the type of laser they used in that model before a certain time...which was a month or so after I bought mine, so thus, bad laser.

I'm not sure what to tell you other than I'm sorry and I hope it's not the laser.

I can understand the cigars and dessert wine. I think I could swing that. As for Sony. . . they have not been helpful. They have sucked to say the least and to say more they seem to be in training for management in Hell when they die.
