Im exactly like you mate. I didn't think there was going to be sharks in assassins creed 4 because there wasn't any in the previous games. I just found out after I bought it and im regretting it. I cant stand sharks in the slightest. Ive checked it out and it looks like the sharks are avoidable. They seem to not attack you when your just swimming while on the surface of the water (I think) Im not going to buy the diving bell and I don't know how the rowboat missions work yet (If theyre part of the main story or part of a side mission) but if I can im going to avoid them. So I would suggest you buy it cause it looks like the sharks can be avoided. But im still not a 100% sure yet. Any way, so far its turning out to be pretty good regardless of the fear that keeps going through my entire body every time I jump into the water. But I haven't been attacked yet so heres to hoping I never will

They did make me stop... I took one look at the hole in the floor and saw all the spider webs and just went 'fuck that' real shame though, that game was awesome and my bloody fear wouldn't let me through...damn

In Toomb Raider UNderworld (i think?) there was this underwater portion that i had a really hard time playing. I felt real anxiety as i played that section of the game, but i just powered through it. The sea, in general, freaks me the f**k out. I find it genuinely frightening. While sharks are basically swimming death tubes, there is so much weird stuff out there that i don't particularly want to be anywhere close to. Also i think drowning has to be one of the absolute worst ways of dying, so yeah. Not a big fan of the sea, which is, all things considered, basically a real-life lovecraftian horror.

Small disclaimer; i know sharks generally don't eat people.
Two things
1. scientists believe drowning to be the most painful way that a human can die

2. 'sharks don't generally eat people' that used to be true. But now that shark protection laws have been put in place and the fishing industry has boomed. There are more and more sharks coming to the shores of the local beaches. There's more sharks in the ocean and less fish for them to eat. Humans are slowly becoming a sharks favourite food.

So far I haven't come across a game where a fear has kept me from playing. However, I also haven't come across a game where the main character is swarmed by wasps/Japanese hornets. If that's ever the case, I probably wouldn't touch that game with a ten foot pole.

I have a thing about heights, so when I was playing the new Tomb Raider at the section when you have to climb the radio tower, it actually scared me. Sure its not real and I'm actually perfectly safe, but it still affected me. I think it made me enjoy the game even more instead of stopping me from playing.

As such, I have come to the conclusion that I may not buy Assassin's creed IV because of the potential death by ocean involved in the game. Obviously, I'm not surprised that this happened as the game was about pirating and assassinating and all good things associated with the Caribbean, but it's slightly disappointing that I may miss out.

This got me thinking though, just thought it'd be interesting to see if there were any other escapists here who had a similar quirk? i.e. Was unable to play a not necessarily scary game, out of fear of some aspect of the game? Or perhaps some other psychological quirk has prevented you from playing a game? Elaborate, explain, discuss!

tldr: Being underwater in games scares me as much as amnesia does, so I don't play the games. What psychological things (fear, ocd, anger) stop you from playing games which may not be necessarily associated with those emotions?
And too right you don't, landlubber! Stay dry on the shore and don't get your your poor wee boots wet.

But no. Some settings might bore me enough not to want to play, though.

Something that I do commonly feel in some games in a weird sensation in my legs when I'm falling. Especially from very high distances in game where jumping high/falling is common and not fatal, like Prototype, or various super hero type games. It eventually goes away.. But I get a weird tingle/tensing up feeling in the core of my legs. It's very odd feeling. But in reality, I don't have any specific fear of heights or falling beyond what probably most people have on an instinctual level.

And something else I wouldn't really call it a phobia exactly, but a sort of anxiety, about games/movies where non-enemy women (civilians and such) are being hurt, killed, or whatever. Even in games where it's common to have a reckless disregard like Saints Row, or Grand Theft Auto. I try to avoid hitting women with my cars or stray gunfire. In general I try to avoid non-combatants as much as a I can, but if a man gets in the way and avoiding hitting him would be very detrimental to my goal I sometimes won't stop.

Back in response to others in the thread, I knew arachnophobia was pretty common, but not so much about fear of water or ocean. I never really thought about it but I guess that would make a lot of games pretty difficult. I know my girlfriend despises the spiders in Skyrim, and doesn't even want to see pictures with spiders in them. I think the problem is with the ones in games that are fast and climb on the ceilings, are jumpy and in general attempt ambushes. Because she has no problem fighting and killing them in World of WarCraft, even the giant ones. Those ones aren't scary to her.

The phobia that I really notice in myself is sometimes claustrophobia. Mostly commonly when I'm on a roller coaster and it uses those restraints that swing down and cover your chest and shoulders, especailly if they click down one too many times and gets tight up against me. I get pretty uncomfortable when it's a ride that has a delay at the end where you are just sitting there waiting for the train in front of you to move on. But being in tight places in games or small rooms doesn't bother me, just being restrained around the chest.

How strange.

wasn't there a patch/mod that removed all spiders from skyrim because the first level ones are unavoidable? can't say i've personally been unable to play a game due to any fears or worries etc
Yes, it replaces them with...odd-looking bears. I suppose you could call them "dancing bears", but that doesn't quite do them justice.

OT: That's strange. I am affected by tall heights in video games, illogical though that is. I've learned to harness the rush of fear over time and turn it into an adrenaline rush that makes playing the game more exciting. Now I seek out the tallest mountain peaks in Minecraft to build a secluded mountain retreat. I build towers rather than houses.

I think all the underwater diving is optional in AC4. I did see from Rev3Games' review of AC4 that fish are the most dangerous enemies so it seems like yet another AC game where it's basically impossible to die.
I dont know man rifleman always threw me for a curb in 3 but i kept missing that part in the tutorial that tells you how to deal with them. On the discussion side I cant think of any quirks right off hand? Im currently protesting capcom for megaman legends 3 and so I cant "buy" capcom games. will still play em though. not sure that counts.

Far Cry 3 gave me a very uneasy feeling when i was in the water. My biggest fear irl is large objects underwater (Could be a ship, whale, shark). Luckily Far Cry had very shallow water, and a big contributing factor to my fear is the depth of the water.

I don't understand why people hate water scenes so much outside of the often shitty controls. Go take some swimming lessons man. There was a guy in my area (We had windmills installed) who thought they would give evryone migraines and seizures who would feel ill and sometimes vomit by looking at them... Stress and paranoia people can have for little to no reason astounds me sometimes...

As for me, I can't play the AC series due to incredibly easy and monotonous gameplay. Hold R1 and push stick to do all movement and win any battle by just spamming a parry, that unlike Dark Souls, cannot be screwed up by anyone and tkes no precision or timing.

ohhh I understand what you mean, I LOATHEEEE going through the manaan part in Kotor because of the very tiny underwater part, not being able to move and having to use that stupid sonic emitter on the sharks causes my blood to rush like crazy with anxiety; I know exactly how many sharks there are and I've never been touched by one but those stupid ones that swim by in the background still creep me out.

There are more than a few sections you have to complete for the main storyline, some in the sea with others on land in pools and caves etc. You will only be able to upgrade the ship so far without updating too, you need to dive wrecks for some of the "elite" level upgrades. Sharks and Alligators will eat you up in some sections, nothings ever attacked me just swimming in the open ocean though. Not sure of that's because nothing can or if I avoided it.

Aw, I thought this was about your brainwashing as a child by the Americans during the Cold War to fight the Communists, and that the audio tracks from ASC4 caused you to go on an unstoppable rampage.

I am thoroughly disapointed.

But no, this isn't that odd.

Um well I gave up playing Dead Space due to huge virtago and illness created in the zero G chambers. And I have a phobia of heights so no matter what game I play when I need to climb up things or be on high ledges I'm freaking out the whole time trying not to die so playing AC climbing up the tallest structures in Italy give me mini heart attacks everytime I have to leap to grab a ledge and get even higher I'm so tense I'm white knuckling my controller! And portal created similar issues with heights and me being a human ping pong was the worst! But I consider it all part of the journey over coming the phobia to do my jobs, despite my issue I've only once had to quit. Also get motion sickness from select FPS games but I take something and keep going.

The underwater portion of the game is only one dive you actually need to complete maybe just hand it off to a friend? And you don't spear any of the sharks while diving you just beat them with your fist when they catch you. The only spearing is one as an optional choice just like hunting is I don't recall a single mission where it was in the main story and mandatory for me to go spear fishing.

However if you also can't stand the sea in general then you'd have to pass on the game because that is your main mode of transportation until you defeat the forts and discover the land via at least one visit to each island then you can fast travel for 98% of the game.
