There was no prophecy in the first place, it was JUST a calender ending. I can look towards the very end of my school calander, it doesn't mean my school will be shut down and close permanently on that day. Besides, a while back wasn't there some professor who said the translation from the mayan calander to the current, modern calander was off by about 50 years? Their version of "2012" might have already happened.
Actually, they had predicted several "world endings" And, interestingly enough, on one of them, tehy got wiped out by teh Spanish. So I think of it more as the end of an era. Something important might happen.

The Mayan calender ends on December 21st 2012, or sometime close to that, tha Mayan calendar was made before the white man stepped foot in the Western Hemisphere, maybe the Mayans realised the calendar they made was going to hold them over for about 600 years and they decided to stop adding days they would never see.

Think about it, are you buying calendars for 2611 yet? What do you guys think, I think its all shit, but for the sake of discussion lemme know what you think will occur in 2012.

EDIT: I know this have been done a thousand times but I was really bored last night.
the Mayan calendar was cyclical, and they charted things by ages. It's not so much that they didn't think 600 years ahead, so much as dishonest people have misrepresented what the end of the calendar means to gullible people.

To borrow from your example, most calendars sold are good for 13 months. That doesn't mean that we plan on the world ending in February, it just means that there's a new cycle of calendars to sell.

Some calendars just play the long game with their cycles.

Well, you know, NASA is saying that the sun is overdue for some kind of massive, electronics-destroying flare-thing, but I'm pretty sure they're expecting it to go down in 2013. Don't quote me on that, I'm not positive.

The whole 'Mayan Doomsday Calendar' is an amalgam of all sorts of older doomsday theories combined with (what I have read in scientific debunkings of the scenario) an at-best loose understanding of Mayan civilization, combined with Aztec and other civilizations around Central and even South America- as it seems to get them all confused, yet still label it Mayan.

The prediction itself is based on ludicrous math and reasoning that no other scientist or skeptic has been able to replicate or follow, without already 'assuming/believing' that it's true from the beginning. Nothing will happen, except all the people who bought items with "no down payment until 2012" are really gonna be hurting afterwards.

My personal explanation is; SCENE, A man is carving out a large calender, when his best friend walks in, looking excited:

"Hey how's it going? How far are you?"
"Pretty good, just finished off 600 years"
"yea yea yea thats cool, now comon, there's some cool people on horses with metal helmets that just arrived! You can finish that later, lets go!"

We are nothing but grains of dust on a marble that is travelling at 67,062mph around a ball of fire. At any moment a volcano could erupt, an asteroid could collide with us, a new disease wipes us out, we pass through a bit of space with stupid amounts of radiation, any number of deities could return or we all get nuked to dust.

So, yeah, just relax. It'll happen when it happens. :p

Oh but the Mayan thing probably wont. It's the equivalent of getting to the end of your puppy calendar and going 'HOLY CRAP ALL THE PUPPIES ARE GONE!!!!'

I have been intrigued by the dizzying turmoil of world events; natural, financial, and societal, and created this video to explore both the causes and solutions.

It is titled:
'2012 Mayan Calendar - A Schedule to Enlightened Consciousness' and is in two parts:
