[sub]*feels stricken with a vague nausea*
... please... tell me you're taking the piss...[/sub]

The lengthy movie is still compressed from a very volume-heavy manga series (so I'm told). It's a complicated story, but in short, it's (essentially) two stories:

1: Follows the psychological state and physical actions of the kicking-boy, runt-of-the-litter orphan Tetsuo and the parallel story of his best friend Kenada, who is the leader of their violent, juvenile-deliquent biker gang / social circle. During a post-drug bar, clockwork orange-style street battle with a rival biker gang, Tetsuo coincidentally slams into and becomes a part of plot thread...

2: The military Colonel of the governing council in Neo Tokyo is spearheading the resurrection of the formerly disastrous Akira project with the close assistance of a aging scientist. Simply put, the Akira project is a trans-humanist arms race to create and control omnipotence. After Tetsuo is accidentally exposed to contact with a test subject [sub]"liberated" by a corrupt council member working through political dissidents and terrorists[/sub], he is hauled in and they realize "the force is strong with this one" and immediately begin experimenting on him.

It was made in 1988, and remains a high water mark for technical classical animation (hand painted cell by cell), as well as being regarded as one of the major breakthrough hits, along with Ghost in the Shell, that popularized anime in the West during the late 80's and early 90's.

If you haven't seen it, but like anime, you need to make a point of doing so with your first available free time.

---

Just for the record, it's tone is nothing like YuGiOh and is meant for mature audiences. Expect a knot of exposition by way of a plot, brutal violence, gore, attempted rape, body horror, sex, drugs and all that other good stuff.

Elfen Lied is definitely really good. No shame in liking it.

I'll have to go with everyone else in recommending Baccano and Clannad as well. Definitely really good.
I'll also throw my hat in the ring for Spice and Wolf, which has taken its place as one of my all time favorites.

I started watching anime when I was pretty young. I used to watch things like Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball and DBZ, The Vision of Escaflowne, Pokemon, etc before I knew what anime was. Then I got into watching it subbed, and have been doing so since. Not sure what I watched first, but Trigun, Rurouni Kenshin, Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion were some of the first.

Since then I've watched like over 50 other series and a bunch of movies, Elfen Lied being one of them and I thought it was pretty good. Been watching Naruto for the longest amount of time, started on it when it was in its second season in like 2003.

As for recommendations you definitely must see Akira, it remains my favourite anime movie and I've seen it numerous times. My second favourite would probably be Princess Mononoke, though anything by Hayao Miyazaki is good.

My favourite series is probably One Piece, but as it is nearing 500 episodes with no indication of ending any time soon its a bit much to get into. Other top ones for me would be Death Note (the reason you'll hear so many people saying its over rated is because so many other people love it) and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu), which was nothing like I was expecting and very interesting.

Death Note is a really good serious anime. It's also, coincidentally, my own "very first love it forever" show.

Cowboy Bebop is really cool, too. It's about a team of mercenaries with terrible secret pasts having fun adventures in space, and it coincidentally has the best soundtrack out of anything ever.
Death note and Cowboy bebop.

I keep getting those two as the highest recommendations (clannad very close though!), are they really that good?
Cowboy Bebop definitely is "that good." I don't want to talk too much about it, because it's just one of those things that speaks for itself.

As for Death Note, it's a pretty cool suspense-thriller. It's about a misanthropic teen who one day gains a magical book which allows him to give people magical heart attacks. He uses his newfound powers to murder criminals, but what will catch up to him first: the police, or his own blossoming madness?

<youtube=y8Kyi0WNg40>

If you're into that sort of thing, it's great, but it falls to bits around halfway through.

I do love suspense in my thrillers. But a misanthropic teen sounds a bit of a turn off. Is he like one of those whiny, angst, annoying protagonists? Or does he have good reasons for being that way that the story tells well?

In maybe the first five minutes of the series he's whiny and angsty, but then he gets his magical heart attack book and uses that to relieve his stress. He's one of the few misanthropes who bemoan the foolishness and selfishness of mankind, then actually does something about it. By giving people heart attacks. Yaaaaay heart attacks!

<youtube=fx55Iv1y0OQ>

The series focuses more on his battle of wits with legendary detective L, who is a better detective even than Batman. Observe (warning: contatins minor spoilers, mostly that L is brilliant):

<youtube=zonNLY0ZQwM>

(FYI: The creepy clown thing is the misanthropic teen's pet God. It comes with the heart attack book.)

My first anime was Full Metal Alchemist.

Elfin lied is amazing And if you like that, you'd like Gurren Lagann or High School of The Dead.

First anime?

Yes, I too was one of those sick fucks who watched Elfen Lied first.

Let me put my response to it with the following words.

I
FUCKING
LOVED IT!

Great, good, and wonderful. It got me into anime and showed me that I can take most of the blood, gore, and nudity an anime could throw.

Well, until I found hentai. But that's a different story.

For recommendation:

Higurashi - If you liked Elfen Lied, you'll like this. Not as good, but it's hard to beat EL.
Gunslinger Girl - Cute girls who are actually cyborgs taking down terrorist cells. DO WANT.
Outlaw Star - Take the original Star Wars trilogy. Now pump multicolored LSD into it.

Ya I saw the first two episodes of HSOTD but the fanservice is really annoying to the point of being a complete distraction.
