Amen, it already started with the new consoles and kind of games that you can basically "play" without even needing to pay any attention to what you are doing (or doing anything at all): http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/11/16/codblops-first-mission-without-firing/
That video is hilarious, not to mention a great example of why I dislike heavily scripted linear game sequences. It makes me think more kindly on my useless AI allies in Crysis, who would run around and shoot a lot, but accomplish absolutely nothing without me.

I can see why developers do it - it's really just a more subtle and in-game variation on the old 'now you do something awesome, but in a cut scene' routine that games like Devil May Cry are infamous for. It makes spectacular scenes accessible to anyone, regardless of skill level, but robs you of the possibility of doing something unexpected that turns out to be more awesome than any scripted sequence.

I'm with you bro, my wife loves Dance Central, and when I got my sisters and in-laws over to play, they were all very interested to know how they could get a copy for themselves. Even when I told them they needed an Xbox, Kinect, and game which would cost around $350 minimum (4G Kinect bundle + game), they didn't seem dissuaded in the least. I'm just waiting to see which one will buckle first and pay $400 to dance in their living room.

I'm waiting to get a kinect till I truly feel awed by a game that supports it.

If something like Oblivion could play on it or some kind if in depth RPG/action game I'd probably get one. Other than that I'm not going to support it.

But, I agree with you, it's fantastic people who would never own a 360 are buying them. Nytimes.com had a really cool article a few weeks back about some artists who had hacked their kinects to allow them to build 3-d sculptures with their hands/tools on the 360 - as a way of experimenting without wasting materials. I love seeing people do that kind of stuff.

It has. At first it sold like hotcakes and many times more than it's competition but now due to very very few quality games being released on it it has become a sort of toy not unlike the kinect and has lost a month here and there to even the ps3. I won't say i don't love my no more heroes and muramasa and Tatsunoko VS Capcom, those are all great games, they're just muddled out by all the toys for kids and non-gamers.

Now this is pretty cool

But what would be really cool is if this new mainstream audience found entertainment in games that weren't the general motion control mini-game stuff (not there is anything wrong with that stuff at all) and went a little deeper into videogaming.

I think that would push the medium forward more than it currently is.

Hey, power to the people. I personally have not picked it up, but I can see the appeal in it.
Exactly, it's not my thing but if you like it go with it.

I don't like it, what if companies completely ditch proper games to make casual stuff. It scares me.

Dance Central is one of those good games.

A huge number of households had consoles or gaming PCs anyway, and that was increasing naturally. Now all I see happening is a saturation of crap on the consoles (See: the Wii).

And do you know what happened with the Wii? When they tried to release MadWorld on it a parent group got up in arms because it was viewed as a family toy, and it's viewed by the general population as such, not as a games machine, which means they can still hold on to their stereotype of nerdy gamers.

No need to worry about that. Activision will be making Call of Duty 27 in a couple years.

And FF 50
At this rate we'll be lucky to see FF15 by the time CoD27 is out.

More people playing games means less people saying games are the downfall of children.

This is good.
