Is my xbox screwed?

Try not to breathe too heavily or play loud music, or say any naughty wiords to the xbox. it's a temperamental little bastard.

Seriously though... it happens if you move the machine while playing or while a disc is inside.

Yes, it sucks. Thankfully it happened on my Halo 3 disc and only a part of the boring campaign is inaccessible.

But when it happened onmy copy of F3 I was a little bit angry...

The 360 spins DVDs incredibly fast. If you move the 360 while a DVD is spinning it is bound to be scratched.

This happened with 2 of my games, MAss Effect and Rainbow Six Vegas 2.

Apparently M$ could have fixed it, but it would have costed them a couple million dollars, so they decided to let it ship as is, and they ended up paying like 1 billion dollars for the whole red ring fiasco.

That doesn't make sense to me but hey, I guess it must to M$ since they knew about both the problems.

Basically, M$ is known for shitty ass products.
you have a PS3, don't you

Relatively, it's rather slow. The 360 by default reads at 12x speed, and will read at slower speeds if necessary. You ever tried bumping your computer tower when it's reading the disks at 32x? The issue isn't speed here, what the problem is, is that the manufacturers of the drives built them so that the disk isn't held in securely.

Essentially this is what is happening:

Xbox 360 developers have confirmed that even with their knowledge that they released Xbox 360's where the disc goes around too fast in the system which leads to scratches.
A sadly failed attempt to combine a DVD drive and a ninja-star shooter.
Makes me happy to own a PS3, no problems. =)
Well, I have thought about switching, but:
a) My backlog of 360 games wouldn't work,
b) I can get pretty much everything on my PC as is, and LittleBigPlanet and the Team Ico stuff, whilst temping, aren't worth £400 (nor is the blu-ray player so long as I have SkyHD)
c) Team Sony have just been so unlikably argorant I can't stand the thought of giving them money ;)
Well, it's ur decision. =)

Except Vista and the 360, I don't know what products you mean? The intellimouses they made are pretty good (Although I'm a Razer user), the 360 controller is pretty solid in design, and... that's about the sum total of the hardware MS makes, the keyboards they make are great, too.
true, I guess its their more expensive products that are defective, and most of their stuff is overpriced, like their hard drives.
$100 for 120 gigs for my 360 while I payed $60 for 140 gigs for my PC. Yeah, ripoff.

Yes, and a Wii, a PC with that can play most games, and a 360, I own it all.
Its kind of hard to be neutral when my old 360 got the RRoD 3 times even after sending it in to get it "fixed". And now my new one usually freezes when I try to start up a game while signed in.

In short, yes. Your drive is loose and you'll have to get a new one in there. You're going to be Xbox-less for a while.

I know vertical set Xboxes often scratch discs, but those are only the older versions. I had mine scratch 2 discs but I got a launch-console. Horizontal should help against this but since this is your problem try calling Microsoft to install rubber cushionpads around the lens of your dvd-reader. That's the main problem of scratching, if your Xbox is not damaged in any physical way.

This is a common problem caused by poorly designed hardware that Microsoft refuse to take the blame for. The problem is that the disk is not properly secured, so any vibration in the house could potentially cause the disk to get scratched.

More information can be found here [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_technical_problems#Scratched_discs].
M$ didn't manufacture the rom drives.

I once shredded a disc in my 360, when I made the mistake of moving the console during it's operation. I have not repeated the mistaken and I have not reproduced the problem.
