Well, well, well. After furiously ranting on how the PS3 is just another console, it seems irony strikes.

Yesterday I received a copy of Lost Odyssey one day prior to its release date in Europe, much to my delight. However when I got around to playing the game the pre-rendered cutscenes were very choppy and often crashed. I was wondering what the hell was going on and I decided to give up trying to play the game when I finally recieved a "disc unreadable" message.

So when I remove my disc and inspect it closely my once perfect disc now has some very neat, clear and precise circular scratches on it. Knowing that this was a common complaint regarding the 360 Im taking it back today to Gamestation, luckly Im protected under the Sales of Goods Act 1979 under which if I am sold a faulty unit with a "inherent manufacturing flaw" which Microsoft have admitted to be an issue in consoles sold before late 2006, I am entitled to a replacement or full refund. Im going to try and avoid MS support on this one as when I actually phoned them, Akbar and Ishman were not very helpful (not a joke).

Well cross your fingers and hope I dont get completly bent over for putting my faith and cash in Microsoft, guess Im stuck with my Wii.

lol its fitting that you get first comment Shadow XD.

As for the link.....thats fucked up. Poor kid, I like Microsoft becuase Im an avid PC gamer but this kid clearly had a love for the xbox, that aint right.

On another note you dont know how tempted I was to put "PS3 sucks *runs away sniggering*" in the OP.

if the360 shakes with a disk in it yeah it'll scratch the thing, so don't shake your damn 360 while playing games on it. i just leave mine laying down and i've never had this problem.

oh yeah shadow skill, you sure showed me, put me right in my fucking place with this horrendus tale of one game being ruined by a problem thats been around for a while and honestly unless you are screwing around something awful shouldn't happen. unless your xbox is deffective it doesn't destroy games for no reason,

so fuck you right back my good man. while we're being petty why don't i point out that the numerous other arguments i've made about the ps3 bing a big pile of shit still havn't been touched even though i conceded one to you. so that still leaves the score- you:1, me:plenty and then some-1

Wah! NO way, seriously. I thought shaking my console would make them run faster.

I have my console layed down horizontally, I dont move it or shake it becuase Im not a moron. And Microsoft have already come out and admitted that the earlier models can scratch games.

They actally have something called the "disc replacement program" to replace all the games that have been destroyed by the faulty consoles.

The game, or the console?

I wonder how much of the 360's total sales were just repurchases spurred by defective units?

I still refuse to buy a 360 until they release a new engineered version of it. I want to play Mass Effect so badly, but I just can't justify knowingly buying a defective product.

If you're not aware, the newer version (with HDMI) mostly features a version of the drive with teflon pads in the tray. That eliminates any risk of disc munching. Also, it's not by any means all of the old 360's that scratch discs, mine has never scratched a disc beyond mild surface lines on a copy of gears when it was moved while vertical. (I didn't do it, my friend did) Mine is the earlier design revision that eliminated part of the RROD problem before the HDMI retool of the console, and almost never even freezes. AT any rate, the current version of the console uses a smaller, cooler chip, has HDMI output and reengineered graphics cooling and higher heat tolerance solder. I doubt it's going to get any better, and I'd have a hard time calling the current gen of it a known defective product.

Actually, it might get better. I've heard the Microsoft is looking to re-vamp the system after Blu Ray won that little competition they were all having. Wait for that?

Well Gamestation are deciding to be bitchy about my return so Ive had to phone Microsoft for a collection. I could force Gamestations hand and take them to small claims court which would take about a month, of course it takes about a month to send it off to MS and get a fixed or new one sent back. Ive heard nothing but horror stories so far so lets hope MS are doing the right thing and getting their shit together regarding these console repairs.

If you're looking for a non-horror story, I have one.

I called MS and told them I was having an issue (Disc read error). It had started weeks previous to my calling, but it got worse and worse until I finally phoned them up.

Then I found out that I'd waited so long that my warranty had just run out. Ouch.

They did it as a warranty issue anyway, sent me a box, and the turnaround time from when I mailed off the box to when I got it back was about two weeks. I've tested it a bit and it seems fine now, so it looks as if they've fixed the problem. Plus they added on another year to my warranty.

Sometimes I think horror stories are what people hear because stories like mine aren't any fun to tell, but just so you know, it's not all bad.

Horror stories have more to them then happy ones. That's why they are better known.

If you're looking for happy stories, my 360 RRoD'd on December 16th. (As usual, my electronics get suicidal around Christmas.) I called customer service the morning of the 17th and it took about six minutes total, including hold time, for the operator to get a "coffin" delivery set up. The coffin arrived the next morning, so I packed up my 360 and dropped it off at Purolator that afternoon; that's the 18th, for those keeping score.

If I hadn't been out of town visiting relatives, I could have been playing my (replacement) 360 the afternoon of the 24th. As it is, Purolator held it for me until I could pick it up on the, uh, 28th I think it was.

So it's not necessarily bad, at least up here in the Great White North.

Well it looks like mine IS turning into a horror story.

I had rung MS up and told them about my woes and that I wished for repair or replacement, well it turns out they only offer free repair for RROD's and that even though this flaw is entirely their fault I need to folk out 60 GBP, what a fucking piss take.

I like to think that if I paid for the repair it would come faster or the service will somehow be better but Im not so sure.

Im gonna give the department of trading standards a ring tommorow.

My 360 sounds like a steam locomotive when I play Mass Effect. It has disc read errors on a daily basis, sometimes works very slowly, and the disc tray jams a lot... but I love it anyway. It's a launch console, a fact that amuses me. I think if it wanted to get a RROD, it would probably fail to do so... cranky little thing that it is.

To be frank, I think the 360's hardware problems are vastly overstated. Sorry to hear you've run into them anyway.

Why Bill Gates? He isn't involved directly with Microsoft anymore. :p

As for a good story, had my 360 stop reading discs, past warranty, sent it in, got it back a week later, good as new, with a reinstated warranty and a free month of X-Box Live. Keep in mind, this was in mid-December.

I always feel anxious whenever I see these sorts of complaints.

I love my 360. Love it, love it, love it. I was afraid, however, when I first got it because of the nightmare stories surrounding the RROD and such. Luckily, those problems seem to have avoided my console altogether. But then I read this sort of stuff and I'm reminded that it can never...be...too...far...away...
