I still refuse to buy a 360 until they release a new engineered version of it. I want to play Mass Effect so badly, but I just can't justify knowingly buying a defective product.
I think it's coming to PC in May.

Im taking it back today to Gamestation, luckly Im protected under the Sales of Goods Act 1979 under which if I am sold a faulty unit with a "inherent manufacturing flaw" which Microsoft have admitted to be an issue in consoles sold before late 2006, I am entitled to a replacement or full refund. Im going to try and avoid MS support on this one as when I actually phoned them, Akbar and Ishman were not very helpful (not a joke).
Dang, I'm impressed. I wouldn't have a clue under which law (if any) I'd be protected. Also amused at the Akbar and Ishman crack. Sometimes I just go directly to the supervisor. I tell them there's no way that two accents such as ours can successfully communicate anything technical.

Read my later posts. Gamestation are fucking me around.

I know the law pretty well, but I also know that its not always helpful. I could take Gamestation to small claims court and although I would'nt need a lawyer/solicitor, the simple fact is I could still have to pay a fee to take them to court and I have to give them a warning in writing and give them a month to respond.

Put simply, the law is on my side but the cure is worse than the sickness in this case. As I said Im gonna ring the department of trading standards when they open and hopefully they will have some sort of qiuck solution.

The only good thing is that if I pay for repair they will extend my warranty. What a piss take.

Being from the USA I have a hard time imagining government having a quick solution to anything, but good luck. I don't know what MS was thinking on this - did they have Eskimos do beta testing? You need one of those little apartment-sized fridges to contain your XBox. Except it's probably sensitive to cold as well. And possibly electricity.

The problem Im experiencing does'nt really have anything to do with the cooling system, and although there are problems related to cooling with earlier Xbox 360's, the problem Im facing is brought on by a missing component in the DVD drive that protects the disc.

The weird thing is all my other games play fine on it, its only Lost Odyssey that wont load now, probably becuase its a dual layer DVD.

One way or another its still a major problem, but on other news it looks like I have no choice but to bite the bullet and pay MS, my only solution is to take Gamestation to small claims court and although I would win, it would still take a month or two and I would'nt have an extended warranty.

Just an update:

Well I decided to pay MS.

Just one problem, they dont accept debit cards, only 3 types of credit card....what the fuck!? Seriously, do people actually have to apply for credit cards JUST to pay for repairs that Microsoft owe people anyway. Sweet zombie Jesus, Im so pissed off right now.

Oh well, I guess Im just another log on the fire for Microsoft.

As someone who has had three 360's cease functioning in fourteen months I can assure all of you that the only thing the 360 is a big fan of is breaking down at the most inconvenient times.

On the fourteenth, after returning home from Target with Lost Odyssey in my hands, I powered on my 360 and was greeted by the red ring of death. I know my 360 did it on purpose. It knew that I, a huge Sakaguchi fanboy, desperately wanted to log a couple hours on Lost Odyssey before being dragged out to a fancy dinner and *Shudders* "Chick flick."

Instead I get to play "The waiting game" which isn't nearly as fun.

Another update guys.

I sorted out a credit card so I rang up MS and have arranged a pick up for my 360, it could take upto a month for me to get it back with no form of compensation. Which is a shame, since y'know, its their fault.

The worst thing is that I cant play Lost Odyssey, I pre-ordered it so I could have the chance to play it the second it was available, it even arrived a day before release.

All I have now is a pair of swollen balls after MS have had a thorough kicking of them.

I cant play my game, my 360 is broke, I'm down another 60 GBP and there is a chance my 360 could come back broken.

If I had a myspace account I would go on there and type something emo, I'm that annoyed.

This is why people own PCs!

Look hard enough, and you'll probably be able to find a free game capable of keeping you addicted for weeks on end. At least until the 360 gets back.

Unfortunately Ive been having PC trouble as well, I just found out that my graphics card was built for Windows Vista.

Guess I'm stuck with the Wii for 3-4 weeks.

Only problem I ahd with my first 360, was it died. I also had a very intrictae Doom3-esque pentagram drawn on it. I sent it in for "repairs" and was uninformed that it was simply being replaced.
CS said it was not their fault I was not informed it was being replced and I was at fault for misconstruing the term 'repair'.

I couldn't figure out why Customer Service was shunning me. I used to work Customer Service for a cellular company. and I was never rude, I was always friendly and helpful and worked miracles. So why? What did I do to gain the god of Customer Care's wrath?
I don't know about you but when I phoned MS Xbox support they were friendly but it was clearly some kind of Indian call centre. I got pissed at one woman who didn't really deserve it when I talked to them.

Its odd that they would replace your 360 though as the call centre constantly reminded me that it would be repaired and not replaced.

Mine's a newer model, came with Forza 2 and (groan) Viva Pinata. Although I love the little white box, it does sometimes refuse to eject the cd drive. I keep it up-right and sometimes it just won't open, I think its get stuck on something as it moves about a milimeter. Also, a cousin of mine is on his second 360, the old one encountered the red ring of death, although with the time he spent on it, it would have sustained less damage if it was fired into the sun.

Hey don't knock Viva Pinata until you've tried it.

I have a very similar problem with my DVD drive. It wont open sometimes and I have to push the disc tray to the left to get it to pop open, I think its getting caught on something on the inside.

i think i got lucky with my 360, i bought it second hand for under half price and it came with everything a new one does and despite me expecting it to break in a few days it has been going strong for the best part of a year, but what makes it all the better is that my friend bought a brand new one but a month ago and he has already had to send it back to microsoft twice.

p.s dont bother with microsft tech support they probaly wouldent no an xbox if i threw one at them(witch i just might do)

the best way to stop the disc tray jammng is to remove the face plate

On your disc, did it just scuff in small places about an 1/8" to 1/4" of inch in from the outside edge of the disc? My Xbox 360 was placing these on the game discs I would put in but would run DVDs fine. I also left my completely horizontal on a stable surface but still had these marks and the disc read error message you described. Just curious about the condition of the game.

Mine's always been horizontal, but does seem to have a tendency to leave scratches on some discs. It's been less than a year since i bought it new so i think I might try and contact customer support and see if anything can be done.

The Xbox 360 does scratch my discs. However, the only one that was damaged badly and became unplayable was my DOA5 disc, but that was because I kept it vertical and my younger brother kept knocking it over.

Maybe some of the older models may damage it more, but the scratches hardly affected my other games. And I have the Elite so Microsoft should have fixed the problem...
