There's a multitude of possible explanations. The official one given by local experts is that most were distracted by large scale fireworks on New Years (the industrial grade ones, not the cheapos some yahoo can get at a warehouse), ran into buildings and each other and fell to the ground. This sort of thing happens every year, and in larger numbers than what has happened this past season. The whole panic is because of an international and instantaneous media.

Mass animal deaths happen every year for varying reasons. Disease, accidents, pollution, etc. People cried disaster because more people hear about it in rapid succession, so they assume something large scale is to blame.
