Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the player allowed to pick whether or not J.C. Denton was a guy or a gal?

You are wrong, you could only pick JC's skin color and 'real name' - you're thinking of the sequel Invisible War, where you play Alex Denton and could choose gender as well.

Supposedly "Official Hints" posted by a moderator in the GOG forums:
1. The return of incredible karmic awareness.
2. Where history overlaps with the present time.
3. They are two different characters, but they complement each other beautifully.

Wait, #2 is a real clue? Ooh! That sounds so much like the Legacy of Kain series, with Kain and Raziel, given the alternate focus on those two very different but complimentary characters, and all the time-streaming. Except I'm not really sure 'karmic awareness' fits in so much...

But hey, Good Old Games doesn't currently carry any Eidos titles so it's at least as plausible as Deus Ex, given those are also Eidos titles.

Don't care about any of the older stuff because... I either bought it when it was new (;d) or got it off the biggest Polish magazine, CD-Action. Deus Ex, Warcraft 2, they had a lot of them. But not Planescape...
