I'm reminded of the old ME2 news articles bioware used to do on the cerberus network. There was a species that launched its first space telescope, turned it on and found themselves looking at an asari cruiser. The ruse having been blown, they got invited to the citadel to discuss membership.

Dare to dream, people.

Kinda cool nonethe less, imo its Mercury's magnetosphere warping the solar flare like an airbag or something.

If it *is* an alien, then I shall also lol, because it means that the only planet to support life in this system is uninteresting to them and they'd rather go watch the sun upclose.

Alternative alien theory, its an abandoned observation platform built by the Ancients!

Wait, I know, it's Sailor Mercury's invisible space castle. yes it's definitely this one. It makes total sense because nothing can beat magic. /nod /nod

not saying its aliens, but if it is, i think its silly people saying its not cause of this reason here, any intelligent being able to master space travel has technology so advance that it would seem like magic to us. 2 people who think we are important to aliens is also silly, any intelligent being able to master space travel has no need to ever deal with us. there is so much resources in space that they would have no need to bother us ever, water exists every were in space, its one of the most common things(assuming there carbon base life form like us).

im going to go with nasa in tell i can get better evidence its aliens.

p.s. suns are giant nuclear plants. im saying huge, much larger than any thing we could ever hope to make on earth, i mean its a nuclear power plant considerably more massive than the earth, its not unreasonable to say with enough technology one can tap into that power sorce.

this is the story (from yahoo)
"Is a giant, cloaked spaceship orbiting around Mercury?

That's been the speculation from some corners aftera camera onboard NASA's STEREO spacecraft caught a wave of electronically charged material shooting out from the sun and hitting Mercury.

Theorists have seized on the images captured from the "coronal mass ejection" (CME) last week as suggestive of alien life hanging out in our own cosmic backyard. Specifically, the solar flare washing over Mercury appears to hit another object of comparable size. "It's cylindrical on either side and has a shape in the middle. It definitely looks like a ship to me, and very obviously, it's cloaked," YouTube-user siniXster said in his video commentary on the footage, which has generated hundreds of thousands of views this week. Now, how this user was able to determine that the object was "obviously" a cloaked spaceship with no other natural explanation remains as much a mystery as the object itself.

Of course, there's another scientifically sanctioned explanation for the curious images, though we're not certain that skeptics and UFO enthusiasts such as SiniXster will endorse it. Natalie Wolchover of Life's Little Mysteries put the question to scientists in the solar physics branch at the United States Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). They're the people who analyze data from the Heliospheric Imager-1 (HI-1)--better known in this context as the camera that shot the footage in question.

Head NRL group scientist Russ Howard and lead ground systems engineer Nathan Rich say the mysterious object is in fact Mercury itself. And what we're seeing in the footage is the equivalent of Mercury's wake, "where the planet was on the previous day," as it travels through the solar system on its natural gravitational path:

"To make the relatively faint glow of a coronal mass ejection stand out against the bright glare of space?caused by interplanetary dust and the stellar/galactic background?the NRL scientists must remove as much background light as possible. They explained that they determine what light is background light, and thus can be subtracted out, by calculating the average amount of light that entered each camera pixel on the day of the CME event and on the previous day. Light appearing in the pixels on both days is considered to be background light and is removed from the footage of the CME. The remaining light is then enhanced."

The analysts say the practice works even better when applied to far-off objects such as stars, which don't move much relative to the sun. But for moving objects, especially planets, the process is a little more complicated. And making matters even trickier is Mercury's staus as the closest planet to the sun.

"When [this averaging process] is done between the previous day and the current day and there is a feature like a planet, this introduces dark (negative) artifacts in the background where the planet was on the previous day, which then show up as bright areas in the enhanced image," Rich explained in an email."
so, i must ask, what do yall thinnk
i have to say, im kinda leaning more to the "its a ship" side
Is there a source for this that isn't some random youtube guy? I know you said Yahoo, but I'd like to see some articles or read something from the scientific community.

Would be cool if it was a UFO but there probably is a simpler explanation.

But I for one, welcome our evil overlords.

If extra-terrestrial intelligent life visited the solar system the first things we would notice would be:

A) Tourists
B) Alien equivalent of David Attenborough
C) Worse, Alien equivalent of Darwin stealing random people in a rather obvious fashion and setting up on some random island
D) Total and utter annihilation of the species to harvest the resources of earth/stop us from ever becoming any form of threat.
E) Off world slavery.
F) Colonization.

I do not buy the "Aliens will have our best interests at heart" I mean, did WE ever have the best interests of anyone at heart when we colonized them? No, We went in, shot people, give the survivors diseases and took everything of worth at best, enslaved millions of people to grow shit that we wanted to sell whilst doing all of the above at worst.

Nor do I buy the "Aliens who have the power to travel the cosmos would then proceed to abduct random impressionable farmers/crash into earth for no given reason". Finally, There is no benefit from a ship the size of a planet nor parking said ship near a star (Stars are hot. Very, very hot) so I am inclined to go for what the scientists say over some dude on youtube who, chances are, wears a tinfoil hat.

I mean, Why create a ship the size of a planet? Sure, it can apparently be cloaked but... Space has debris, debris is dangerous. Ship the size of a planet would attract a lot of debris. Ship the size of a planet is a big target so is useless if someone wanted to blow it up. Ship the size of a planet is not covert so useless for studying anything.

Ship the size of a planet would cost so goddam much to build as to be pointless. I mean, look at the Death Star!
Well since we are speculating obviously no not all Aliens would be nice as on Earth all Predators are more intelligent than their prey and one of the nations that had some of the most scientific advances at their time was Nazi Germany(ok now we have the nazis mentioned we never have to mention them in this thread again and internet rules are in equilibrium).

Just to say I am going with what the Scientists say but why park near a sun well possibly to study the Sun/Planet as I don't know how common a situation like ours is with Mercury and the Sun. I do know our eclipses are supposed to be unique.

If they did have a Spaceship that was capable of space travel to different planetary systems and what not they would obviously have had to have developed some sort of shielding technology or have really good metal as if not space travel is a no go at those speeds. This is assuming they travel anywhere near the speed of light.

If this was Aliens and they did build this ship how do we know this would be a big ship relative to other ships. For all we know this could be the equivalent of a corvette or other small vessel.

OT: It is obviously the planet Vulcan.

That's a violation of the treaty Zachary. You know DAMN well this star system is in the Demilitarized zone! I hope you're prepared to be censored by the Federation council.
There will be no need for a censor, Liutenant. As stated earlier, everything is happening as laid out by the High Emperor. The Human's reactions to this breach in security has been flawlessly conducted according to His plan, with the aftermath being crucial to the overwhelming of their defences.

All Hail the High Emperor!
ANOTHER thing I hate about being stuck on this pathetic backwater mud-ball, no one ever thinks to inform ME about these things. Any news on that transfer request Battleaxx90?
We apologise, but the High Emperor has insisted that you remain at your post for the time being. He also apologises that you did not recieve the notice of this stage of the plan. The officer who neglected to deliver you the notice is currently being forwarded to your ship, where you may punish him as you please. He will be dropped off at Drop Point 287 at 0200 this Saturday, where we will also have an agent with your new orders.

All Hail the High Emperor!

We still have trouble getting out of our own orbit, at least with any life aboard our ships.

Any alien vessel sufficiently advanced to get here from far enough away that we haven't seen them, or that came here from somewhere nearby that we have not been able to find, will NOT be detected if they decide to cloak themselves. Logic says that you don't enter an occupied solar system without first making sure your cloaking system works, so about the only thing we can say it isn't is a primitive cloaking field.

Oh, and the size of a planet? Any solid ship that large would start pulling Mercury out of it's orbit and more or less deliver a solid kick to the teetering mobile that is our solar system. Unless they have already managed to control gravitational effects, at which point the idea that we'd be seeing them if they didn't want us to becomes even more ludicrous.

Mercury, like Earth, has a magnetic field. That void is exactly what happens when a coronal mass ejection hits a planet with a magnetic field.

Five minutes + google = not sounding like a complete moron.

I don't think it's a ship at all (though how one could come to that conclusion so quickly and with such certainty is almost mind boggling), but I love how people would assume they'd be a violent race out to destroy us. Clearly our violent and thoughtless tendencies haven't served us too well in the past. I like to imagine that IF there is some intelligent life in the universe that has somehow mastered interstellar travel, they'd also have compassion and a moral system to match that level of sophistication. Just imo.

FOOLS! don't you see the aliens want you to believe it to be their mothership while they actually created a exact replica of mercury for their ship and then they cloaked the real one.
So it we retaliated we would be attacking Mercury while they sat safely in their planet sized ship.

I remember since I was a kid it was explained to me that when I look to a star in the sky I actually see it how it looked milions of years ago and by our time that star might even be dead. So to a lesser extent it's pretty easy to apply the same reasoning here and be accurate when they say the filmed results photograph an area where the planet was a day ago.

As for UFOs this isn't more far fetched than people that thought the moon was empty inside and aliens spy on us.
you are aware that the Earth is roughly 8 lightminutes from the Sun, right? and depending on where Mercury is along it's orbital path it's between 3 and 11 lightminutes from us.

but you're right, they did film the day before, by having the damn camera pointed that way the day before.

DA FU&K? Nuke it just for safety, identify yourselves or enjoy dodging a barrage of ICBMs coming your way.
just how's an InterContinental Ballistic Missile supposed to get to another Planet?

it's be something more along the lines of NESVR (Nuclear Equipped Saturn-V Rocket)

or that new rocket nasa's working on, with it's 130 ton payload, SLS i believe it's called

YET ANOTHER REASON I wish The Escapist forums had a friggin' "like" button.
Anyway, I've thought about this since I posted my original opinion on this thread (see page 1) and... fine... lets go with the whole "OMGZ ALIENZ" thing.
The ONLY thing that I could imagine this being is NOT a ship but some kind of observation post (or even an unmanned satellite that can gather information on a planet/species while it develops over time).
I do believe in aliens and I do believe they have visited this planet before (hell, if you want proof... google search some ancient egyptian hieroglyphics that depict people worshiping a giant saucer in the sky 'NOT the sun')
Anyway, maybe it was left by those aliens and it runs off of solar power (because keeping something like that cloaked would take MASSIVE amounts of power) but maybe it was left here a 100 or even 1000 years ago to observe our species development and they cloaked and 'hid' it next to the sun in anticipation that we would one day have technology to observe the heavens.
Anyway, just a thought (one that's not "ZOMG ALIENZ!")
