Someone call Shepard.
YET ANOTHER REASON I wish The Escapist forums had a friggin' "like" button.
Anyway, I've thought about this since I posted my original opinion on this thread (see page 1) and... fine... lets go with the whole "OMGZ ALIENZ" thing.
The ONLY thing that I could imagine this being is NOT a ship but some kind of observation post (or even an unmanned satellite that can gather information on a planet/species while it develops over time).
I do believe in aliens and I do believe they have visited this planet before (hell, if you want proof... google search some ancient egyptian hieroglyphics that depict people worshiping a giant saucer in the sky 'NOT the sun')
Anyway, maybe it was left by those aliens and it runs off of solar power (because keeping something like that cloaked would take MASSIVE amounts of power) but maybe it was left here a 100 or even 1000 years ago to observe our species development and they cloaked and 'hid' it next to the sun in anticipation that we would one day have technology to observe the heavens.
Anyway, just a thought (one that's not "ZOMG ALIENZ!")
just a quick rebuttal of need to "Cloak" something to hide it. if the "Alien Construct" were to keep Mercury between its self and Earth, then barring the occasional probe, it would remain perfectly hidden, as we would not have LOS.

and Zhukov worked in SC and ME, he has won 2 inter-tubes

I say it's either Unicron from Transformers or Galactus from Marvel comic. (Is he still using a planet size dics or a flying saucer?)

Crap, my Sangheili war brothers are being way too eager to start the invasion of Earth. Must let them know to pull out until I've exposed all the humans weaknesses.
Note to self, humans incredibly gullible and assume anything out of the ordinary is aliens.

Honestly though as cool as it seems it's probably very likely not aliens. Odds are if we ever do come across an alien species in our solar system it would probably at the most be some kind of tiny slimy bug squid thing about the size of a matchbox.
It's a big universe and the odds of a hyper advanced alien race being this close to the Earth, without being spotted at any point prior, is just too ridiculously small.

Let's hope they aren't hostile.

Or maybe they're waiting for us to discover warp so we can be adopted into the galactic space federation?

p.s. suns are giant nuclear plants. im saying huge, much larger than any thing we could ever hope to make on earth, i mean its a nuclear power plant considerably more massive than the earth, its not unreasonable to say with enough technology one can tap into that power sorce.
You mean, like, I don't know, solar power [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_power]?

Chillax. Camera detectors just tend to play up when they're hit with too much light (you know, like the sun). Don't know how to link tweets, but it's Phil Plait @BadAstronomer what I'd consider a reliable source...

Call Ion-Cannon personnel to their stations. We need to hold off the Imperials until all transports got away.

Was wondering when that would be said

OP: The internet always lets the tinfoil wearing nuts have a say just ignore them until the next mystical space thingy shows up an ignore them then just for extra kicks

Good thing the Scientist gave an accurate and logical explanation for it so soon. I doubt any conspiracy theorists will latch onto this now. *sigh*

At this point I'm tempted just to let conspiracy nuts just keep going round in circles and weaving their web of conspiracies and evidence. I mean there is no data that can disprove a lot of these theories. Any rational explanation or evidence was simply "fabricated" and thus proves the conspiracy.

Obviously this is an attempt to steal all of the valuable mercury metal from there. I knew we shouldn't have taken so long to get it.

They're the same person. HL-Shep grew up into the male Earth-born ME-Shep. True story.

They got the article the wrong way around. It should be "Awesome space phenomenon makes for great photo. Also, some random Youtuber says its aliens".

Instead we get "SPACESHIP CLOAKED NEAR MERCURY, SAYS MAN! Also, some random person says something scientific at the end of the article. but who cares?"

someone i showed this to said something about planetary magnetism that is like a planet's natural defense from solar winds or something. that might be it but i honestly WANT to believe its a ship, but if its the size of a planet thats just insane. (clingon bird of prey X1000 lol jk)
