Emperor Maximus I, somewhere in Oilean Uisce
Maximus strolled leisurely besides a still pool, enjoying the peace of being alone for once. Back at camp the preparations for the resistance were continuing, with the Council working on getting an entire army ready. The loyalty of King Alika and King Ver-jie had both been attained and now they too were preparing for the storming of the Auroran Archipelago, even as Ajivhan troops marched south. Nothing so audacious had been attempted in that region for over a century and so every detail had to be checked and rechecked.
Suddenly without warning the waters in the pool stirred and out rose a gigantic head, staring down at the Emperor. He instinctively flinched away before recognising the figure.
"Lysei!" Maximus exclaimed, "It's been a long time, I haven't heard from you since the mess with Cyth'raul,"
"Emperor Maximus," Lysei boomed, "Are you aware of what is happening in Saranda?"
"Yes, Gangari told me," the Emperor replied with a sigh, "I don't know what to do, the people choose Roland Olin, what was I meant to do?"
"I didn't pick Olin to rule, I chose you," the god replied sternly, "You must remove this rot, and his puppet,"
"I don't think I can any more," Maximus said morosely, "I've reigned for too long, I don't want this weight on my shoulders."
"Who else could?" Lysei asked simply, "Come, I have something to show you,"
With a flick of a watery hand the scene around them disappeared and was replaced by a high grassy hill, surrounded on all sides by thick forest. A line of weary Driders were marching in formation, behind them horse-riding Aurorans who every now and again would poke the arachnids with their spears.
"This is happening all over Aurora and Saranda," the god said coldly, "The Drider race with be extinugished soon if Roland Olin gets his way,"
"Damn..." Maximus muttered, shaking his head.
"There's more," Lysei added as he swept the Emperor upwards, far above the clouds. As the ground retreated, the Emperor's eyes widened. "I give you, the world," the god proclaimed.
"It's so... large," Maximus replied in awe. The Earth hung like a fragile blue pearl in the inky depths of space. "And round, the philosophers were right," he added with a chuckle.
"Look at the stars," Lysei pointed away from the planet. Maximus followed his gaze, there were clearly many more than could be seen from the ground, and up so high their twinkles seem subdued. "Each is a sun not unlike our own. Many even have their own planets, perhaps some with their own lifeforms looking back at us now,"
"There must be thousands, or even millions!" the Emperor breathed.
"No," Lysei shook his head, "There are trillions!" As the pair floated higher, the stars receded to be replaced by a scattering of milky white galaxies and then eventually thin tendrils of matter, criss-crossing the universe as far as the eye could see in every direction. In the end there was nothing but blackness. "There is yet more," the god added as darkness surrounded the pair.
"How?" Maximus asked, looking around to see if there was anything he was missing.
"There are more dimensions in this universe than meet the eye," Lysei said curtly, drawing lines of fire in the void with his fingers, "Up and down, left and right, forward and back. Lets call them x, y and z. Do you not remember the geometry lessons Ronin gave you so long ago?"
"I do," the Emperor nodded, "How can there be more than those three though?"
"There is a fourth spacial dimension, I call it mu. Three directional beings like you and I cannot perceive it, most of the time anyway. I occasionally catch glimpses out of the corner of my eyes, the height of my powers are needed however to move a physical object through the medium. Mu is where me and Gangari trapped Jashiki,"
"But..." Maximus said in confusion, putting his hands to his head, "Where do you go if you move through, eh, mu? I mean, I can't imagine any other directions than the usual ones?"
"Into other universes," Lysei replied, "At-least as we perceive them. Imagine a multitude of three dimensional universes, all flat in the mu direction, piled on top of each other like countless pancakes. Who knows how many are out there, it could well be infinite,"
"Infinities," the Emperor shook his head in disbelief, "My uncle used to say that our ancestors came through holes from other worlds. Could anything live permanently inn four dimensions?"
"Perhaps," the god shrugged, "Sometimes I feel there is a presence out there beyond our own, watching our every move. In a sense I hope there isn't a four dimensional being, as imagine the incredible power of such an individual. If we were to look down on a colony of ants living in two dimensions, a flatland where there is no up or down, we would see everything in that world. A building would look open from the top, we'd be able to reach into any safe or even see the insides of the ants. If we were to step into their world if it would as if we had appeared from nowhere, and we could disappear just as easily by moving up or down out of their perception,"
"So..." Maximus said slowly, "A four dimensional being would be able to walk and out of our plane at will? And see inside us through mu..." he paused for a minute in silent reflection, "Why are you telling me all this?"
"My point, Maximus," Lysei replied, "Is that reality is vast, vaster than your mortal mind can imagine. Do you not see the vainglory of Auroran philosophy, to spill so much blood and cause so much suffering to conquer what, a fraction of a grain of sand on an endless beach? It's insanity, all in the name of a man who died over six hundred years ago."
"I do see what you mean," the Emperor murmured, "It is said that Father Matthias wished for the whole world to unite under Aurora, but having read what he wrote, I don't think he'd would have wanted it done by the sword. There has to be another way,"
"Indeed," Lysei said and with a click of his fingers the pair found themselves back in the forest of Oilean Uisce. "Maximus, I have a very important task for you, and you alone. Ever since you were small I've been able to read your mind, your soul even. I know unlike many in this land you ultimately have good intentions at heart. I am charging you with the task of saving Aurora from itself, to finally atone for the corruption at your nation's heart. I have tried to steer Aurora in the right direction but the stick can only achieve so much, change must be willed from within,"
"But if they don't want saving...?" Maximus started, before stopping and meeting the deity's gaze, "I'll do it anyway,"
"Good," Lysei smiled as he began to fade away into the trees, "Keep going, we will meet again soon..."
Maximus turned after the deity vanished and made his way back to the camp, a new spring in his step. Like it or not, he was ready. Ready to be Emperor again.

Plus, since this is getting a little complicated, a map of the main different cultural areas of Aurora:
Note that for simplicity only the majority culture of an area is shown in areas where there are several, for example there is a significant halfling minority in Oilean Uisce and many driders live in the Costa Nord.
