Gangari, 13/21 AP

There wasn't much that could be done by the time it had begun. It had happened as he had predicted. Budraal fell. A puppet took power. The tribes were corrupted.

Some tried to hold their ground against the corruption but even banding together they were few. Gangari tried to help but there were so many of them, so many dead, so much killing. He needed to make the same choice again. Make an example or save what he could.

So he decided to save those he could, as he had before.

[hr]

A large crowd of Luug stood inside a long forgotten cave of the Deep Tribes. Each were tired and battered and hungry. After they had settled Gangari appeared on top of a large misshapen rock in the center of the cave and began to speak.

"Men and Women of the Tribes- Children of Therax I thank you for trusting me enough to come tonight. I want to begin by saying that I have failed you. I failed to stop the corrupter from subverting the Tribes for her own goals. The war that has consumed your people had began and ended before I realized what was happening and there is little I can do to stop or reverse what's happening right now." Gangari spoke mournfully "You are all that remain of those who worshiped me and those who worshiped Therax in the Tribes. Your are the only members of the Tribes that refuse to do so in any other way than openly. Your are the only members of the Tribes that are free as of now." He paused briefly and then continued "Free people of the Tribes I stand before you tonight to offer you something. I offer you a chance. A chance to survive. A chance to rebuild. A chance to some day free your Kin. In exchange I ask for nothing. I ask for nothing as I always have."

A large Luug with blackened glassy skin stepped forward from the crowd and bellowed "What is this chance and why should we trust you?"

"My children have built a city in the south. They were exiled from their lands as you have been. For refusing to sacrifice to the God of their conqueror. As you are now they are small and proud and strong." Gangari paused briefly and then continued "They have agreed to open their homes and share the fruits of their labour with you if while you stand with them you share the fruits of your labours with them. Should you band together with them the authority of whomever you decide is your Supreme will be accepted as an equal to their leaders. As for why you should trust me, I have no grand answer for you. I have asked nothing of your people since I first met you and I ask nothing now. I offer a chance to survive and a place to rebuild for as long as you want and need them."

The Luug bellowed again "Why should we band with your children?"

"For the past few decades they've been working tirelessly to rebuild. They hold enough land with more than enough materials to do so. They're willing to help you rebuild if you work beside them. They also have more than enough food to survive the winter and more than enough metal to arm you for the future."

The Luug stepped back into the crowd and the crowd began to discuss en masse.

After a few hours the discussions quieted down and the blackened Luug stepped out again and spoke "We agree to your offer."

Gangari clasped his hands "Okay. If there is anything any of you need to attend to do so now. If there is anything you wish to take with you find it now. If there is anyone you wish to convince to join us try so now." Gangari imprinted an image of a field a short distance from the tribes southern border "I will be waiting there for the next two days. At the end of those two days I will guide those present to the city in the south. If any of you are late or decide to join those leaving after that point I will try to help you."

The crowd looked at him briefly and after a moment dispersed.

[hr]

Two days later the crowd of refugees met Gangari in the field. Most carried sacks of what little they owned or had stolen. Others dragged carts filled with bodies and supplies.

A particularly large and reinforced cart held a large stone block carved into a shrine to Therax, in the center of the shrine and burning into the stone below it was a spawning pool. It was the original spawning pool belonging to the Silver Tribes and it now held the remains of Haakan, who had sacrificed himself in the first days of the war that had burned its way through the tribes. On the back of one of the pullers was his spear.

Members of nearly every tribe stood infront of Gangari ready to march. Each in the loss of their homes was now working side by side, grievances against eachother forgotten and ready to move as one.

As the group organized itself Gangari yelled to them and started walking towards the south. After a few moments they followed.

[hr]

One cold night in the tribes Gangari appeared in what was once the home of Buudral. Though most of his things had been taken by now or destroyed in one corner sat a case. An old familiar oaken case. Gangari brushed some dust off of it and picked it up before disappearing with it.

[hr]

After a week on the road news was received of the invasions. A couple of the Luug quietly walked away in the dead of night in despair and weren't seen to return. The news was taken badly but wasn't completely unexpected considering what had happened to the supreme.

- Reclaim spears of lordship (both of them) from the deep tribes.

- Disconnect Gangari from the Deep tribe artificers (rune magic/ gangari based rituals will no longer function for them)

[hr]

- Create a non-sentient species smaller than an elephant.

Physically and mentally designed after the Carniolan Honey Bee, the German Black Bee, and certain breeds of bumblebee but of course with certain changes.

*Cough* en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carniolan_honey_bee *Cough* en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_dark_bee *Cough*

Though the Marsh Bee has been created using certain physical traits of other species, it has features unique to itself. The compound eyes of the marsh bee are a metallic bronze colour. The chitinous exoskeleton and hairs of the marsh bee are coloured by their environment, over generations the colours will change to match the environment in which they live causing breeds to camouflage themselves effectively through directed genetic change. The abdomen of the marsh bee has an odd feature, during night the venom of the marsh bee will glow and it will glow through their abdomen causing them to glow like fireflies after nightfall.

They have a high resistance to heat, cold, and disease.

Temperamentally they are very docile to humans and other sentients, but will become hyperagressive and swarm en masse upon creatures which attack and consume magic (such as the Auroran Genned magic eating bugs). Their venom is infact tied to this behaviour, to creatures which can sense and in turn consume magic their venom will cause the bees to appear to be a great source of magic to be consumed over other things. However if something is stung with this venom it will cause a stung creature to also appear to be a great source of magic to be consumed over other things (in effect causing magic eating bugs and other similar creatures to turn upon eachother).

As an additional note, if they continue to receive sustenance as they normally would they will continue to live without succumbing to age. This allows them to live exceptionally long lives compared to other bees and combined with long memories and an imprinted tendency to be curious they tend to become individually intelligent over their long lives (all castes) and develop minds of their own. This causes hives to develop certain quirks in their behaviour.

As part of maintaining their ability to function for long periods their stingers will not tear themselves loose from their bodies after stinging something due to them not having barbs. This allows them to defend themselves and the hives without committing suicide.

Due to a quirk in their existence when gathering pollen they tend to gather small amounts of the spore upon themselves, causing the spore to spread throughout the lands as they do and continuing the spread of Gangari's influence.

- Action is difficulty 9, with a cost of 3 AP. Total domain bonus applied to the roll is +6.

- Should have 10/21 AP at end of turn.

Aetherial Collective

The Collective implemented practical physics and chemistry, seeking to improve their knowledge of the mysteries of nature. Meanwhile, their pair of diplomats made it safely to Mereton and Grand Ajivha, though the latter had to shelter in Silveroot whilst the firestorm was raging outside. At the end of the month, the Collective citizens were surprised to welcome exiled Luug into their lands, the last remnants of Gangari's followers in the Deep Tribes.

Aurora

The Auroran's triple-pointed invasion plan was as successful as expected, with the Luug unable to withstand attacks from multiple directions at once with the new cannons, they quickly turned and fled their coastal homes, retreating inland to the safety of the mountains. A small population was left behind however, trapped in the newly conquered lands. Meanwhile, settlers in Padonia pushed northwards to meet their military compatriots and those who stayed behind finished the construction of Aurora's newest citadel, Osyth.

Deep Tribes

As news of the dual invasions reached Highcrag during the celebration of the Golden Ascension, the Luug quickly prepared themselves for war by raising another standing army and garrisoning Cytundeb. They were not fast enough however to save the island or it's nearby coastal regions from falling into Auroran hands, though they had some success resisting the Grat up north. Scouts were nevertheless dutifully deployed south to the edge of Aurora's newest colony to report on potential locations for reprisals, as were the Fists of the Supreme elite units. High command also ensured that Cold Blast Furnaces and Coke were swiftly implemented, for the good of the war effort.

Grat Shee

The assassinations from the Grat spies inside Deep Tribe territory worked like a charm and the Luug found themselves confused and disoriented. Whilst the Grat's first battle was won quickly and efficiently, the second point of attack became mired in difficult terrain and had to withdraw from the invasion, albeit largely unharmed. At the same time, Grat Shee blacksmiths finally made the breakthrough on axes they'd been hoping for.

Raptor States

Whilst other nations fought tooth and nail, the Raptor States expanded it's borders eastwards, though a second colony to the south regrettably failed to find any suitable terrain. Back at home, factory assembly lines were successfully researched. The Krakari mind was not entirely focussed on peace however, a new explosive device called a 'grenade' was built by combining existing technology, whilst a shipment of weapons was sent to their allies the Aurorans, which was gratefully received.

Gods

Cyth'raul

Cyth'raul's wrath was great and the long-suffering people of Ajivha paid the price for it, with countless homes set alight and crops destroyed in the ensuring fiery hailstorm. The Silveroot university found itself a haven as refugees flocked to it's magically protected boundaries, it's library quickly converted into a makeshift shelter for many thousands.

Gangari

Aside from withdrawing any remaining support from the Luug, Gangari created the Marsh Bees, a new breed of insect designed to combat those built to destroy magic. For what purpose exactly remained unclear.

King Indraj-Alika, Silverroot University, Ajivha

The King paced up and down the corridor as Ashlif held open the university doors with a cadre of volunteers, refugees from Grand Ajivha flooding in by the minute. Cultists stood around, using enchanted sheets of metal to cover vunerable windows and doorways but there was barely enough to go around. Indraj didn't even want to think about the damage that the great firestorm would be causing outside.

"What are we going to do about this?" his Queen Didana approached, bundles of papers from the library in her arms, "The cultists aren't sure how much longer they can hold on if the storm doesn't die down, we've already lost half of the west wing,"

"I'll find something" the King quickly assured her before making his way up to the nearest chapel, locating a senior high priest he trusted.

"Which deity could be responsible for this?" he asked quickly, gripping the learned elder by the shoulders.

"It is not our patron Gangari, I know that for sure!" the old man quavered, "He is never like this. Lysei, perhaps but his fire is not thought to be this indiscriminate, that leaves only one god who I think is likely to be..."

"The Pact-forger!" Indraj finished the priest's sentence for him, it fit like a glove. He hurried away without saying another word and then in the privacy of his throne room, he knelt down before an alter, avoiding the gaze of a large painting of Emperor Maximus staring down at him from one corner.

"Please Pact-forger, Cyth'raul," he prayed, "Come forth and tell me the reason for your wrath, so I can make amends and relieve the suffering of my people,"

(Minor) - Pray to Cyth'raul

Grat Shee, Cheif Sharo, war camp

Sharo stood in the center of a rough made leather tent around a mostly flat rock in the newly taken area. Looking down at a hastily made map that had been set down just an hour before he stares down at the new roughly guessed area the People had taken and looked up to stare at Merso who was standing across the tent against the wall, looking at nothing. Still staring at Merso Sharo listens to the reports being given by a half dozen scouts and messengers from around the newly taken area and then from the beaten army. Sharo's eyes narrow as he hears about how the Grat in the second army had been pushed back without being killed.

Standing and handing the map to another Grat close by who takes it and puts it away Sharo speaks softly to Merso, his voice low and soft but the edge of death kissed steel under it plain to any who looked.
"You were sent to take land and beat those who had control of it already. But you come back, alive and unhurt, with nothing but an army who has been defeated and nothing more. Explain to me why i should not send you to watch over the threesh while another takes your place."

Merso keeps looking at nothing, his claws digging into his own legs as he stays still and silent. The shaman that had gone with him steps forward and speaks to the angered Sharo in his steed.
"Please my Chief, there was no way we would have been able to continue our fight as we were. These things we fight are unlike anything we have ever seen or hunted before and we were not prepared. He asked me my thoughts when we did not defeat the others and i agreed that returning and refilling our ranks and supply would be out best options. Merso has done his best and i believe that given another chance he will show you his ability."

Merso's eyes flick to his shaman Gyrde and then back into nothing as Sharo looks at the shaman closely and walks around to stand right in his face. Staring into it and tilting his head back and forth Sharo moves over to Merso and reachs up to sink the tip of one claw into his chest and slowly draw it down. Parting the skin slowly until a shallow 4 inch long cut crosses his chest, Merso not making a sound of moving at all. Sharo pulls his claw away and licks the trace amount of blood on it.
"Your shaman spoke well for you. Fail again and that cut will be the death of you."

Sharo turns away and Merso backs away and leaves quickly, ignoring the cut to his chest and the threat his mind wholy focused on the new battles he is to face and how he may win.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Newly taken territory, renamed Kortala

Zortu was the shaman that had been connected with Crina when she had been sent out to take these greenless lands. He was standing there watching the stragglers of the rocks they had taken from the battle just weeks ago, and he was still shocked each time he saw these new things. They had been studied roughly after a few of the battles and there was nothing inside that the Grat could eat. Zortu Jumped down and stopped one of these Luug and looked up at it. Looking it over slowly and taking in its living body. Stepping aside after a long minute and letting it go past.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Kortala, group of Luug now in charge of the Luug population now.

The Luug that was now the leader of the village that had been taken over by the Grat looked at the small group that had been allowed to gather and rumbles to them softly, atleast softly for them.
"This may be for the best, even though we are not our own right now we are free from the genocide that had been happening in our nation. We who used to worship the wanderer were always peaceful but any who spoke up about the change in our worship was killed and many not even thrown into the spawning pools for the next generation in fear our belief would somehow be transferred."

The one who was speaking had the marks of one who used to be a rune user but the marks were now dead and he was one of the few who had survived the killings. Those around knew he still did not like the deal maker and has secretly kept his old belief. Several of the Luug there looked away because they had joined in the killing. The leader spoke again this time in a harder voice that makes the dust in the ceiling fall.

"The deal maker has become something evil, asking for its worshipers to kill those who do not believe. It is to much, it is no longer a god we can follow or should be followed."

The Luug there keep quiet, most still shocked over being taken over by the Grat and some because they agree, but most because they know there are several Grat outside listening to them more than willing to report any rebellious speech.

Gangari, The Raptor States 21/21 AP

Blacksmiths worked day and night beside their apprentices. Guns, blades, bullets, and armour were being produced en masse. The metal the collective brought them was limited, as was the amount they had learned to grow for themselves.

Their work could be lightened. His gift could go to better use than as a tool of Cyth'raul.

After nightfall Gangari made his way into one of the reorganized workshops of the Krakari and spotted one of the tired men working on his own. Gangari patted the tired Krakari on the back and sat down on a chair he formed under himself before offering a chair to the man. After a long discussion Gangari gave the man a book filled with thoughts and designs. It would allow him and his colleagues to begin constructing blast furnaces for the Krakari and to teach others of how to do so.

Contained upon pages near the back was a method of producing the fuel known as coke, though the Krakari lacked access to large amounts of its constituent coal so it was unknown how useful that would be.

After a day Gangari left the man with his colleagues. He felt that they were prepared to do the work on their own.

[hr]

Ashlif, Grand Ajivha

Burning life. Everything that had been built was being torn down. Men, Women, and Children were willed into the University for protection by her, unknowingly following a command she had broadcast across her reach. Cultists barricaded doors and windows with enchanted metal to keep the fire out, air was manufactured for them by her. The huddling masses turned to prayer.

The fire kept burning her flesh but it wasn't hot enough to harm her. Just enough to make it painful.

After the first hour or so she had an idea. Attached to the Ajivhan aqueducts was an enchanted Decanter created by Gangari to bring limitless water to their deserts. Inside the city were water benders who had stayed in their lands through it all. The benders were teleported into a chamber inside the university and their leader was handed the decanter, Ashlif smiled to them saying "Use it wisely" before disappearing hoping that they would understand what she intended of them.

[hr]

The Marshlands

Odd bees started to appear throughout the Marshlands of the Collective and the Yish'Tai. Though it was beginning to snow in some areas the bees seemed unphased and their hives were constructed. A few days after appearing the Marsh Bees began to hibernate in their hives which they coated in some kind of waxy insulant.

It would be a long winter and they couldn't function in the cold forever.

[hr]

Rederick's Rest

"What do you mean burning?" Rederick yelled at the runner in his office. The runner limply picked up the singed paper that he had taken at the border and handed it to Rederick.

Rederick stared at the paper for a few moments reading before sitting back down at his desk "Tell the others that reports are to come directly to me and gather the administrators here for me." He sighed and stopped the runner from leaving yet "Don't spread anything about Ajivha, we'd have people deserting if they found out before anyone could be sent."

~~~
Three days later plans were being rolled out of the office and into the hands of workers. Even as the cold began to affect the land towers, traps, and even walls were being constructed both within and around the territory of the collective. All of it was designed to catch any attackers off guard with the way it was worked into the landscape and the way it was covered by plant life.
As the lands were reinforced the Luug who had recently joined with the collective became restless with their living arrangements, the majority of them having been directed to workshops that had been converted for their use as homes in a base manner. After a short talk between their new Supreme and Rederick plans were drawn up and resources were given to them to expand the settlement for their own kind.
~~~

After a week of work Seneschal Jubal rode back into the settlement from his meeting with Saranda. A few personnel having been left behind to speed dealings with them in the future.

A deal had been drafted between the two nations. Surplus of what they had that the driders didn't in exchange for surplus of what the driders had that they didn't. And of course a strange book he had found in his pack, something about it made him feel that it was meant for the driders.

~~~
In one of the chemical houses a project was being carried out. Krakari medicines were being tested and compared with herbs shown to them by the local Yish'Tai. It was believed that though they weren't the same plants that some were similar enough that they could begin replicating and improving upon the Krakari medicines for their own use.
The same group however was tasked with simultaneously attempting a second undertaking. Their knowledge of healing was unparalleled in the collective and so they were also tasked with a different kind of medicine. In other times there were rumours of a poison handed down to the Krakari by Qartog, a sort of liquid death. The idea of creating a liquid life or a Panacea had been brought up recently by some of the collectives workers as an idea to overcome the limitations of their bodies ability to heal themselves. After a few days of trying on their own they realized what the simplest solution would be. Qartogs prophet lived amongst them. After some discussion Cawles was brought into the project and recipes were drawn up beside chemical equations. Methods and ingredients were slowly modified over the course of the month until positive results began to appear in their genned test subjects.
It was hoped by the administrators that research into both the magical and mundane would overcome any shortcomings of either in their early forms.
General Fallan, northern Padonia
"Send my thanks to the Raptor States, we owe them one," the General told an officer as he watched the shipment of Krakari firearms being unpacked. He resolved to convince the Emperor to send a return gift, when the war was over.
Overall, it had been a mixed month. On the one hand, the front line had been pushed far past Cytundeb into Deep Tribes land, right to the edge of the mountains. On the other, their Grat allies up north had been having some difficulties in the high terrain and the General had a feeling that the brunt of the Luug military was yet to be unleashed. The news of the firestorm in Ajivha was disturbing too, given many of his men had origins in that land, but any changes in overall strategy were not his decision to make.
His own army was to rest in Padonia, whilst the other two kept up the advance into enemy territory. A repeat of the earlier pincer movement with two armies was to be deployed, designed to capture a great swath of land at once with minimal casualties. Quick, clean and efficient. General Fallan could almost hear the blasts of the cannons that were being dragged along behind his troops at that very moment, ready for their first land battle.
"Beautiful," he muttered to himself as he watched the soldiers practice with their new guns.
Khyber, Talis
"In there..." A hooded Krakari pointed to an isolated door along the alleyway. Yoren and his spies had been helpful in finding Severyn cells all over the Raptor States but to Khyber, this one was the most important. He was tipped off that the Severyn cell in Talis would be handing off a message to one of their leaders. It was difficult dismantling the cells because just as he took one down, another two would take its place. Yoren helped but Khyber didn't know that it was this bad.
He signaled to his soldiers on the rooftops, hidden among the growing columns in the sky. With the advent of new technologies, new buildings were sprouting up all over the States to accommodate. Smoke began pour out of the large chimneys, providing some cover for his soldiers. They crept up close to the building as the sun began to set.
"Wait." The Krakari rasped once more. "They will hear your them if you go any closer. I'll draw them out." The Krakari stepped forward without another moment to spare. He weaved through the emptying streets and moved in on the wooden door. Khyber peeked out from his cover, ready to cover the agent if anything went wrong. Khyber always wondered how these Krakari were chosen and how they were trained. He had heard stories but never any solid proof. He had seen what they could do but they had remained silent these past 25 years until now.
The building was solid and no windows as well. Still, the Krakari probed around the building until he halted at the corner of the building. The Krakari spotted a hole and squatted next to it. Khyber saw the Krakari reach into his pocket and pull out a small device. A match was lit on the fuse before the Krakari gently put it into the small opening. He stepped away and a few moments later a loud boom was heard from inside the building. Smoke billowed out of the hole and the door swung open with several Severyn scrambling out of the door. Khyber gave the soldiers the signal and they pounced on the stunned Krakari. There was a brief fight but most of the Severyn were too dazed to fight back so some of them surrendered to Khyber's troops.
Khyber strode forward as his troops restrained the Severyn agents. As he approached them, he noticed some of their feathers were blown off along with blood leaking out of their ear drums. These new weapons of war was getting ahead of even Khyber but he didn't have time to dwell on these feelings as he entered the building with a few of his troops. With torches in hand, Khyber and his troops searched the building even though there was only one rather large room with desks lining the inside of it. Papers were scattered everywhere, all kicked up by the explosion from the grenade.
"Confiscate everything!" Khyber yelled out, realizing what they had just hit. "Search this place!"
His soldiers fanned out once more, going through the paper files and bringing whatever what seemed useful outside while the hooded Krakari shadowed Khyber with his every move until he stopped. He looked at the ground, tapping on it with his talons.
"Khyber, there's a loose stone here." The Krakari bent over the began to pull away the stone floor beneath him revealing a wooden panel beneath the floor. Khyber went up to it and hacked away the wooden floor to reveal a tunnel behind the fake floor. With a torch, Khyber went down into the tunnel himself. The way was cramped and damp, hastily made but thorough in its design. It was a labyrinth of tunnels leading every which way. It would take some time to see where they all went but Khyber spotted a literal paper trail leading down one of the tunnels. He picked up one of the sheets which turned out to be a letter.
Khyber's eyes widened as read the letter. He read it twice, three, four times to make sure it was truly there. Yoren was never more right than he was now.
Aerith, Aquila Estate, Silver Claw
Aerith had only arrived in her family's estate when she heard of a new war that had sparked between Aurora and the Deep Tribes. It saddened her to know that the Aurorans were diving into another war when they had just finished one not so long ago. What was even more surprising to hear was the that the States had given military arms to the Auroran army. She wished them luck but even then it was hard going up against stony beasts when your soldiers were used to fighting halflings.
"Anything else I should know, father?" Aerith asked with all of her politeness. She was fatigued from travel but still eager to know of the world's events even if it was from her parent's point of view.
"The Strix clan proposed to go further in their study of medicine, going as far as researching the very anatomy of our beings. Quite exciting but also quite odd. Although it is not going to be difficult finding bodies." Her mother said sadly. "Some Krakari did not make it home from the war, that much you saw but I pity what the Auroran mothers and daughters have to deal with."
"Such is life." Her father said concisely. "And you, I'm happy to see you again Aerith. So much has been changing here in Silver Claw. New buildings are being made and new technology is being discovered every day. It is an interesting time to be alive and I am so thankful that you are in one piece. You're lucky. If you were here a few days earlier, you would have been on a scouting expedition to the mountains."
"To the mountains? I thought the Luug have ownership of those mountains?" Aerith said curiously.
"Well some parts of it. The mountains north of the known territory of the Deep Tribes are largely unoccupied which means you can be sure that the Council will want that place scouted out for resources as soon as possible."
"At the start of winter?" Aerith said, nearly outraged. "I do hope the Council knows what they are doing. They are sending-"
Before she could finish a messenger knocked on the door and her Father attended to it as her mother gave her some more tea. Her father and the messenger exchanged hushed whispers as her father's jovial expression froze to a serious look. Her father looked to Aerith.
"Excuse me." He said before he left the room and went outside to talk some more to the haggard messenger. Something seemed off about the exchange. For her entire life, Aerith knew the messenger that usually attended to the family's messages but she didn't know this one.
"Is the messenger new? Where is Haerys?" Aerith asked her mother.
"Yes, that's Johkar." Her mother said as Aerith noticed her look had changed as well. "He's quite new actually."
The sudden change and the questions arising made Aerith uneasy. She excused herself and made her way up to her room which overlooked the city and looming mountains in the distance.
As Lysei finished up another attempt at a weapon, a Drider approached him from the shadows. It was curious how the creature had found him, but Lysei figured this might happen eventually. ?Lord Lysei,? she began, ?you may wish to hear about what happened in Ajivha.? Lysei?s eyes grew wide as he realized what had just started. He disappeared into smoke, with his new weapon in hand. If it worked or not, would be seen later.
The Driders implemented a ton of new research, while at the same time opening up trade on their end with the collective.
Highcrag, Den of the Supreme
Jugaan drummed her fingers along the armrests of her throne as her eye gazed across the mock-up of the battlefield. The only good news was the success of whatever Lew'Pan had been doing. Details faded in nothingness as details of the war took their place. Suddenly a messenger burst into the room. The Golden One glared at the hasty servant.
"What is it?" She asked, annoyed.
The messenger was altogether too quick to answer, "Hul'dran and Guuden have been found dead, Supreme."
"You know the procedure, replace them immediately." Jugaan replied.
The messenger nodded then left, "The military are already seeing it to."
With that, Jugaan made it her business to enter the war room. Her entrance was not entirely... subtle as her voice thundered through the entrance, "Do not insult me. News is not news if it is stale."
"Apologies, Supreme." One elderly Luug named Yaag responded, "But do not fret, they have already been replaced."
"As it should be." Jugaan nodded, then turned to the circle of strategists, "So what is the plan?"
"Well..." Another began.
Meanwhile, Lew'Pan was left to his own devices. If any scientific breakthrough that would help the war effort would be acceptable...
Cyth'raul, Southern Padonia - 16/21 AP
The Pactforger's only answer to the prayers demanding mercy was, "Did you not realise the Deep Tribes were under my protection? Hurt them not and I will do the same to you. Continue to do so, however..."
As if the illustrate the point, the ground near the deity cracked. That was enough time answering questions, now was the time to continue the vengeance as part of the Pact made with Jugaan.
Aetherial Collective
With their new Luug citizens, the Collective attempted to increase their borders further into the marshlands but ended in failure when not enough stable ground was found. However, camouflaged fortifications were successfully implemented into their existing land, as was their research into apothecaries, alchemy and architectural engineering.
Aurora
Another round of fighting led to successes on both southern fronts, the Aurorans pushing the Deep Tribes further yet north with their cannons and dragons. Another as-of-yet unnamed citadel was built on the northern coast of the new territory and back in the home provinces, the world's first steam-powered locomotive was designed by Auroran inventors.
Deep Tribes
The Deep Tribe's great gamble at reaching the citadel of Osyth ended in failure when their troops were routed at the battle of northern Padonia, the Auroran army's Krakari firearms quickly proving too much for the simply armed Luug. The first standing army of the Deep Tribes was hereby lost, although their second retreated to fight another day. Back in Highcrag however there were some successes to outweigh the bad news, their research into explosives and spawning pools was successful and the new Siegebreakers elite unit was formed from surviving troops.
Grat Shee
The Grat Shee's army from Kortala was more successful in the mountain terrain, perhaps from experience, and managed to push further east into Deep Tribes lands than they'd ever imagined. This assisted new research into the strengths and weaknesses of the Luug. Meanwhile new lands to the southwest were also settled by Grat, and implemented findings into the prevention of infant death led to a new boom in Grat population.
Raptor States
The Raptor State's newest colony that bordered the northern mountains was a success by all accounts, as was the new factories built down south and the research into revolving parts, except perhaps by the Krakari tasked to work them. Scouting of the mountains themselves however lead to no results of real value, as did the research in anatomical studies which failed when the purchased bodies mysteriously vanished one day.
Saranda
In a flurry of research, Saranda implemented additional matrons, genetic control over plants, guerilla warfare and blast furnaces. At the same time, talks to open trade with the Collective were completed.
Gods
Cyth'raul
In southern Padonia, Cyth'raul attempted to stir up magma deep underground into a destructive volcano but the god's efforts were in vain, as all that ended up being formed was a deep open pit of molten lava which stubbornly refused to budge.
Gangari
Gangari's powers ran true and he sensed the location of Cyth'raul in southern Auroran lands.
Lysei
Unfortunately, Lysei's second attempt at building a magical weapon was no more successful than his first, and he was left with little of value.
Drya
Drifting on the wind, Drya was wracked with loneliness and despair. Everywhere she looked all she could see was the selfish and destructive nature of man. There was no place for her in these lands, she could not stand to bear witness to the atrocities of her former people any longer. Turning northward she vanished, travelling to the forests of the one race she still held in high regard.
[hr]
'What... what has happened here?' Drya thought. She was walking through the remains of a battlefield, the terrain torn apart and the stench of death permeating everywhere. In the distance she could see Grat bustling around a village, all carrying weapons and tools of war.
'The Grat have invaded' she realised, blinking in surprise. 'They would use my gifts for something so arrogant, so selfish, after I expressly warned them not to! This horror cannot be allowed!
Her rage building and building Drya vanished, reappearing in the heart of the Grat capital. As she looked upon the race she had believed in, the people she had thought were above the rest of the foolish mortals of this world, she felt sick. This betrayal showed their true colours, they were no better than any of the other nations.
Large cracks formed in the forest floor as Drya rose into the air, thick and twisted vines bursting through the surface. Consumed with hatred and grief she opened herself completely to this strange forest, the forest that had been changed by the actions of another deity. The forest gladly accepted her and their consciousnesses merged, the two entities becoming one entwined being.
Grat stumbled out of their homes, looking fearfully up at the raging goddess above them. Blazing eyes gazed down upon them and a word could be heard whispered throughout the trees.
"Die"
The vines shot forth, grabbing and crushing the nearest Grat that they could find. Sharp branches plunged from the trees, skewering the little creatures as they attempted to flee into their hideaways. Birds swooped across walkways clawing out eyes as larger animals rampaged through the undergrowth, crushing anything that got in their path. Death reigned in IronTooth this day as a god's pain and rage became too much to bear.
Hours later the chaos had calmed. Surviving Grat peeked out from where they had hid, the whisper of the wind and the chatter of birds was all that could be heard. Drya watched from a high branch as the cautiously emerged and began collecting the remains of their kin.
'Heh, it seems I failed,' she thought tiredly. She smiled briefly at the irony of it all, before looking towards the sky. 'It seems that this world is too cruel for one such as I. Maybe it would be better if I just left...'
As she gazed pensively upwards, small green and white lights rose from her body and drifted away, scattered on the wind. Soon there was no sign that she'd ever sat there, the death below the final mark she would leave upon this world.
Gangari 17/21 AP
A whole month of watching death unfold and being unable to do a thing. Strength being burned finding the monster. Blood boiling beneath the flesh, rage overtaking mind.
A charred skeleton sat on the ground near him, its empty sockets staring at him. Gangari remembered the man, and in his absence he was killed in the terror of it all. Gangari dragged what remained of the farmer to his field and began to dig a grave. He saved those he could, teleporting those who hadn't made it to the University to Safety but some perished before he found them. His strength couldn't go to saving them now. Later he thought when it was all over he could try what he had done during the first catastrophe with the dead. Restore them. Likely end up binding them to him in the process.
After the man had been buried and his grave marked Gangari started sat down in the remains of the mans house. After a few hours of meditation the image finally appeared, the smug *****.
It was time to prepare. He removed his eyepatch and placed it in one of his pockets, exposing the bronze facsimile and its red glow to the world. He then summoned a suit of bronze plated armour with silver runes carved into it onto himself. It gave him an appearance not unlike that of Lysei. In his hands he summoned a new quarterstaff made of the same material as his armour with a blade on the top end with a shape and size like that of a lochaber axe.
After stretching himself and his new form he called out to Lysei "Cyth'raul has broken our pact and become a threat to mortals. She needs to be dealt with. In this matter I ask for your assistance to see her stopped before more damage can be wreaked." He then sent out an image of her location "Please."
Gangari then teleported off and charged at Cyth'raul to begin the melee. No attempt at subtlety or speech.
Elsewhere in the world an oddity began to occur. Priests of Gangari and those in possession of one of his spears began to see the fight from Gangari's perspective through their left eyes.
Emperor Maximus I, Nova Verde, Isle of Maia
Maximus clutched at his head as suddenly images of Gangari lunging for Cyth'raul appeared before his left eye. Instinctively he reached down into a pocket to feel the god-hiding stone between his fingers, called up from the palace treasury once news of the destruction of Ajivha and Cyth'raul's message had reached the Auroran Archipelago. Unlike his brother's use of the relic however, this time it was only aimed at sheltering the Emperor from the Pactforger.
"Good luck, Gangari," the Emperor quietly prayed, wondering if he'd see his old mentor Lysei turn up soon alongside the god of knowledge.
.
General Fallan, south of Highcrag
The bitter chill of winter had set in but that had barely slowed the advance of the Auroran army. Swept along by the knowledge of their Grat allies successes up north, the General and his forces soon found themselves at the foot of Highcrag, the supposed home of the Deep Tribes leaders. The mountain's heights daunted even the most experienced soldiers but Fallan felt sure they'd feel more comfortable once a group of climbers brought in from Sirigarde instructed them on how to move quickly in this terrain. He finished penning a quick note, to be delivered to the Luug by dragon.
Dear Jugaan,
We are at the foot of your mountain capital. Aurora did not wish to go to war but your unprovoked attack on the Grat Shee, as well as earlier attacks on civilian Auroran traders, left no other response possible. We feel this has gone far enough however and therefore we are willing to sign an armistice here and now if you are also willing to discuss terms, and we will move not a foot further north into your territory. Please send an affirmative reply within three days, or we will have no choice but to continue the siege as planned.
Yours in the name of the Father,
General Marcus Fallan
As the message was signed and carefully carried off, the General wondered what their reply would be, if one arrived at-all. The rock men were a very inscrutable race, perhaps why the war had started in the first place.
Grat Shee, temperary military base in Kortala
Merso was smiling as he stood in the heavy tent that had been set up. His army had done its job, and they had taken the land they had failed to the first time. Standing there listening to the reports next to Crina, the commander of the other army, who stands several inches shorter even not counting her lack of a crest.
Sharo was scratching out orders an wooden slats and hides, sending out runners and orders to all points of the newly taken territory and also out into a few spots in the forests where orders were needed. After almost three dozen new messages had been sent out chief Sharo looked up and grabbed a much larger roll od leather that had been sitting next to him. tossing it out and waving both Merso and Crina forward to look at it. When they did they saw that the roll of leather had been a large map more detailed and blown up than the ones they had been using before. Sharo gave them the time they needed to take in the landmarks for the areas so they would be able to use it fairly reliably before rapping his claws on the wood.
"This will be the last season of war with the Luug, if everything goes well. Our allies to the south have been eating them up and attracting their attention to them as we take their land up here. If you both can take the lands assigned to you in this next march than we can leave the new populations of Grat here and go back to our forests, where we may look to expanding in other ways."
Both the army commanders nod and look down at the rough areas of the map where they have no real information on other than a few of the Luug. Crina was the first to speak up, her voice much softer and higher than the males it was just as hard.
"Why are we stopping after this? we should take the rest of the land and let our allies deal with living next to us."
Sharo shakes his head and taps the tips of a few of his claws on two parts of the map between them.
"No, they have high and strong walls and several places that are built to be very hard to take and they are ready now. If they had been closer and we had attacked them first we could have used our spies to kill and wreck havoc to make it easier. For now, we will stick with this plan unless something else comes up. You two will be in charge here, i have to go back to Ironteeth and work on directing the repairs."
Crina and Merso both nod almost in time and put their heads down to start looking over the map and pointing out things they can do as well as where to stay away from. Sharo soon leaves and along with a fill dozen squads of hunters makes his way back to the forests at the foot of the mountains.
Army one attacks south into Luug territory, not at the citadel.
Army two attacks to the east with the First Hunters into Luug territory.
Raid Luug territory for one population.
Lysei
Theremon. That name, it had come up before, but vaguely. Lysei had met the other new god, Drya in the past. She seemed harmless, and would be able to exist. Theremon still remained an enigma however, and it was coming to be a very long time now. Lysei had very easily found the minor deity roaming around Mereton. So many of the gods had recently been in that area, especially the new ones. Lysei wondered why. The god of fire watched and studied Theremon closely over a few months, masking his own presence. The god looked sickly?for a time, in fact most of the time Lysei stalked him, Theremon looked positively weak. As if he was supposed to be feeding on something, but that thing did not exist.
That was, until the war started. When the Aurorans invaded against the Luug over what Lysei could only imagine was some sort of territorial nonsense, Theremon rejoiced. Lysei watched from afar as the god bathed in the blood of thousands, increasing the offense of both, reducing cities to rubble. He was a kid in a playground, and Lysei clutched his own weapon. Theremon had no principles, he had no morality, no concept of right or wrong. He was a god by all rights, but one who could only exist for blood and carnage. The fields were cast in his own mayhem, rocks from Luug and blood from Aurorans decorated his hovel and Lysei slowly floated down.
Theremon in his own ecstasy, almost missed the towering fire god as he lowered himself. The god spoke softly, which Lysei did not expect. ?Have you come to join the festivities, brother? It is so?beautiful. I could never in all my life imagine something so wonderful.? Theremon turned to Lysei with hopeful eyes, drenched in a river of blood. ?Won?t you, brother??
Lysei stared into Theremon?s soul. He was genuine, a beast, a sentient beast brought to life. The god simply shook his head. ?You?re a liability, Theremon,? he began with little emotion in his voice, ?and you are no brother of mine.? Lysei made a quick lunge with his sword, but Theremon grabbed it, metal slicing his hands to ribbons, but the flesh reformed as quickly as Lysei could cut. Theremon?s smile was getting wider, he laughed and said ?good, brother! I knew you were here for the festivities!? Lysei withdrew, slicing Theremon?s hands once again and analyzed the situation. Theremon was walking to him, slowly. The god had no weapons, but Lysei refused to underestimate him. Theremon kept laughing.
?Brother! It?s your turn now! Become a part of this masterpiece!? Theremon lunged himself at Lysei and the fire god had no choice but to step back and allow Theremon to fall on his sword. The god of war looked surprised for a moment, but continued to move toward Lysei, impaling himself further on the massive blade. Lysei twisted the blade, but it did not slow the monster down. Theremon?s words were garbled now, but Lysei could make out what he was saying. ?Kill, maim, destroy! That is what we are for!? Theremon reached the hilt of Lysei?s blade and grabbed the fire god?s throat. He started to choke Lysei and the god of fire in one movement swung his sword to the side, cleaving Theremon in half.
The god of war looked down at his missing legs, and almost in a betrayed manner whispered ?It?s?cold, why are you so cold?? Theremon eventually hung limp over Lysei?s body and the god of fire tossed his other half to the ground. Theremon would eventually get up, that much he had figured. Lysei debated his options. Theremon was a monster, but innocent as well. He couldn?t find any real malice, just blind ignorance unbefitting of a god. Lysei sighed and said ?You can not be of my kind, Theremon. But I can not imprison you for your nature. Thus, you shall live forever as an immortal man, powerless to me, but to other mortals a champion. I will be watching you. Do not make me revoke this chance.? Theremon could feel the power leaving him, as augur poured out of his bisected form. He made one last look to Lysei, but he couldn?t see the god anymore. Everything was foggy.
________
Lysei did not enjoy what he had to do to Theremon. He also would not enjoy what he had to do to Cyth?raul. The idea that the god would begin burning Ajivha of all places proved that it was only after vengeance. Lysei could no longer find any expediency in Cyth?raul?s existence. It was?a liability now. Lysei hefted his sword and moved to Gangari. Words were worthless now. Cyth?raul worked in pacts, and had agreed to this pact. Lysei knew the creature was smart, probably smarter than he was. So he wondered if this was just a final act of defiance, some sort of rage against the darkness. Lysei noted that he could also no longer feel Drya?s existence. He wondered how that came to pass. Th world was growing so empty now. Perhaps it was his destiny to fade with time, just like the old gods before him? Difficult to tell. Lysei would have more time to wonder. Cyth?raul came into his view, and the god of fire swung straight for the god
Another month, the same amphitheater, the same crowd, the same man.
Rederick began to speak.
"This past month there have been certain rumours spreading. Today I stand here before you to tell you the truth. A few weeks ago fire began to rain from the heavens upon Ajivha." Some of the crowd began yelling at him "The city took shelter within silver-root. They're fine. We hadn't sent help because fire was still raining upon them. Last night it finally stopped. Though you haven't known the reasons for your work as of late, let it be known that it was to help Ajivha. Last night a caravan carrying the fruits of your labour was sent out to see that Ajivha was restored to its former glory." As the word glory was spoken members of the crowd yelled out in anger. "I know how you all feel but now isn't the time for that. That isn't our decision."
[hr]
"Do you know why they're asking for all this defensive stuff?" asked one of the scientists "Probably has to do with the Luug." responded one of the scientists "Maybe they're afraid?" responded another "Paranoia." spoke a third. The first man spoke again "Why? What reason could they have for that? We're at peace with the world." The fourth man turned from his work and stared at the first man "Not everyone." Highcrag, Den of the Supreme
Jugaan didn't even look at the letter, the whole thing was probably just garbage anyway. Not even fit for the maggots. She simply couldn't, as the new Supreme, hand over her people to the Aurorans regardless. Ah, the affair of her and the throne would've been quite a love story if the throne could love back. Still, the mantle of Supreme weighed heavy on her shoulders.
"We continue with the plan as normal." Jugaan announced as the letter had been disposed of.
There were grasps and even a whimper within the war room. The Supreme narrowed her eyes, as she leaned on the table, examining the situation. "If you can think of a better one, please go ahead and share it." She said.
There was an unsurprising amount of shaking heads. Satisfied, Jugaan continued, "Remember, my path is the right path. The Pale One's path and Therax's path. Cyth'raul has shown me this and has shown you the power of a true god. We are formed from the lifeblood of the land and that filth is defiling it by attacking us. They will reap what they have sown soon enough though..."
If only she was in front of her troops while she said that, and not a bunch of officers crowded around a cluttered table. Speaking of which, now was the perfect time to deploy the Siegebreakers, wasn't it?
Cyth'raul, Southern Padonia - 16/21 AP
Cyth'raul wasn't the least bit surprised. The two gods were reduced to what they actually were: nothing but rage. It was pitiful to see divine beings being controlled by such mortal and base things such as emotions but that hardly mattered. Defending oneself did. Mimicking their approach, there were no words, seeing as they wouldn't work against such rabid dogs but there was nothing but a disappointed detached from current events in the Pactforger's heart, in contrast to the other two's rage. Wait... There was reluctance in Lysei's swings. Irreverent. All had chosen their path now as the fight between the three gods began.
Defend self.
Aetherial Collective
In response to the influx of Gangari-worshipping refugees, the Collective expanded their territory to the west, for the first time gaining a sea border. At the same time, they researched fortifications of both runic and living metal types and also implemented apothecaries and liquid life alchemy, keen to improve the health of their citizens. The first batches of these were donated to their battered neighbours in Ajivha, along with architects to assist in rebuilding. In temples across the land, Cyth'raul become a target of ridicule and contempt by Luug and Ajivhan-orginated citizens alike.
Aurora
True to their word, with no response from Highcrag the first Auroran army moved in, sweeping aside any resistance. Back in the home islands, the first steam gun was unveiled by Auroran technicians. Not all energy was dedicated to defence at this time however, the borders of Padonia were yet further expanded by colonists eager for a new life and across all Auroran lands metal tracks began to appear as the first steam-powered locomotives arrived on the scene.
Deep Tribes
The Deep Tribes again found themselves struggling militarily, their army in the east was beaten back southwards by the horde of invading Grat whilst the Siegebreakers were slain by Auroran cannons, unable to break through enemy lines. Attempts to raise a new second army ended prematurely when it was found that the Deep Tribes remaining territory did not support enough population to sustain another army. Deep within Highcrag however, spawning pools with medical properties and explosives were both successfully implemented, though whether they'd be enough to turn the tide of the war remained to be seen.
Grat Shee
Despite earlier set-backs, the Grat Shee made great advances to the south and east, finally reaching the Krakari border. Their raids deeper into Deep Tribe territory for population were a more mixed success, with the southern venture gaining a measure of population while the eastern one ended up largely empty handed. Their diplomats made it across the border into Raptor States land, and not a moment too soon as the dying wrath of Drya came across the land and none were safe from her anger until she had finally passed.
Saranda
Preparing for the next season, the Driders of Saranda dedicated their energy towards a bout of research. They were only mildly successful however, with success in rune magic and means to contact the gods whilst their other attempts found little of value.
Gods
Cyth'raul, Gangari and Lysei
Without warning Gangari and Lysei attacked Cyth'raul, angered by her actions in Ajivha. The Pact-forger attempted to defend itself and was left with some damage, though still with a lot of life left in it.
(Cyth'raul now is at 9/15 health points)
Drya
With her dying act, Drya attacked the foundations of Grat Shee society, the forest she'd created turning on it's inhabitants with a ferocious anger. When the dust cleared, it was clear that the Grat had survived the attempt to wipe them out, though it would at-least a season to fully recover from the damage caused.
"Do you hear that?" Asked Rederick "That's the sound of inevitability." A Justiciar sitting on a long clay slab looked at Rederick oddly before he spoke again. "Gangari appreciates you volunteering yourself for the experiment." The Justiciar smiled and spoke "It's my duty sir. Anything to help." After a moment he frowned and asked "But the risks I was told about. I will be taken care of right?" Rederick looked intensely at the young Justiciar before speaking "After a discussion with my sister, she's promised that if anything should go wrong she'll put you back together. Right?" After a few moments Ashlif appeared behind Rederick and simply smiled and nodded at the young man on the slab. Noticing the reaction on the mans face Rederick turned and looked "So I assume you'll be beginning now then?" Ashlif with a smile still on her face turned her head to the door and mouthed something. After a moment she turned her head back and spoke to them "I'll begin in an hour, my assistants are still preparing."
Rederick shook his head internally and decided to ask Ashlif "Did you invite Cawles?" Ashlif frowned slightly before speaking "After her ascension Father got in her head. If we're to surprise him she can't know what we're doing."
Grat Shee, Kortala, War camp
Merso stomped out of the hide where he had just gotten his new orders( via messenger!) and towards where his own private hide had been dug out. Storming into it and throwing his axe against the wooden wall hard it buries itself into the wood deep as he tips over the low heavy wooden table and roars, the sound carrying over quite a lot of the camp and even to where Crina was still standing inside the hide with the messenger and the shamans there to keep order among the non-hunters.
As Merso's seconds and thirds slowly walk in they find the walls of the hide are beaten on with large chunks axed out and much of the sparce furniture has been overturned. As they wait for Merso to calm down they trade quick glances and can already tell what the news is. Merso growls from deep in his chest.
"We are to attack the moving rocks to the south, but Crina is to attack their rock fortress. With the First Hunters!"
He pulls his axe out of the wall and raises it to bring it down on the table and stops. Looking at the table and sighing he puts the axe down slowly and looks over at the small group of Grat standing close to the entrance looking at him. Merso takes a deep breath again and lifts the heavy table himself to right it. Several of the lower level Grat rushing over to pick up the leathers and pieces of wood that had been scattered.
Merso sits down on a small nest of furs and leathers and looks at the 10 Grat standing and motions them to all take a seat around. For several long minutes the only sound was some leathers being moved around as things are sorted. Just as Merso was opening his mouth to talk the last person any of them expected to walk in does, Crina stepping through the hanging leather and stopping right inside. Many of the assembled Grat there glared at her and none more than Merso, but she makes a small movement with her claws and tail that any nonGrat would be unable to understand.
But it made the whole room stop and stare at her, recognizing the motion as one from one friend to another to express trust/friendship at the same time. As they all stares Merso speaks quietly.
"You are very brave or very very stupid, and i can not quite tell which right now. Why are you here?"
Crina steps in farther and through the hanging leather they can see dozens of little movements of Grat taking up positions outside. She says quietly.
"My people are outside, and they will stay outside till this talk is over. Yes, i know i will be taking the Grat share in this next battle. But we both know that there are some who are not working out as well as they should in their position."
Most of the Grat inside had blank and uncertain looks but Merso and a handful of others looks surprised, then fearful and considering at the same time. Merso himself sitting up sharply and growling.
"Get out! Now! Pray that i do not report this to Sharo or Kesar."
Merso's shoulders and face showing anger but his tail in a weird position that Crina both say and recognized. Turning she makes her way out swiftly and the whole group outside move away. Looking around at the Grat in with him Merso slash's the air with his claws.
"This did not happen! Do not repeat it or remember."
As the Grat around looked at him and some swallow Merso sits back and starts slowly scratching at the wooden table, small slivers being scratched out.
