Howdy folks. So today I went out, drove around, got some breakfast, and went to a garage sale. Bought myself an N64 with three controllers, and 23 games (Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., and Super Mario 64 to name a few) for $30. I'm trying to set it up right now. The right light on the N64 is on, but there's nothing showing up on my screen. Just a blue screen for TV/AV. Having never own an N64 before, I have no idea what I'm supposed to do. Would anyone be able to help me?

Did you put in a cartridge and check all of the inputs?

They can be pretty dodgy sometimes. Try blowing out any dust around the slot in the N64 and on the card where the chip is. And try reinserting it after every attempt to turn on the N64. The guys at Gametraders used some liquid and brushed it all around where the cartridge connected with the N64. It's a pretty common liquid which evaporates really fast, I just can't remember what the name is at the moment. That may have sounded crazy but it worked really well.

Oh yeah, like the guy above, you have to have a game cartridge in when you turn it on otherwise nothing will come up since the N64 doesn't have anything onboard like an OS like the new consoles have.

Ok... Aside from connecting the AV leads, and making sure you've got the right channel. (a lot of TV's these days have 3 or 4 different AV channels)...

N64's can sometimes be a little finicky, and do weird things.

Some games are worse than others, so try a few different ones. (I've found conker's bad fur day and perfect dark often don't start first time.)

If you've got an issue like this though you usually get a black screen and the screen will flicker at the moment you turn it on.

A blue screen showing nothing at all does, unfortunately seem more like you've just forgotten to plug in the leads or something like that.

Check the cord running to the TV and then flick it off and on a few times, it should work eventually, this happens commonly with the 64.

All cords are plugged in, everything is turned on. Still nothing. My TV just has a little button to go to AV. Push it, in AV. No AV2, AV3, etc. Just AV. Blue screen is the regular AV thing when nothing is on. Blue screen when PS3 is not on, XMB when PS3 is turned on.

My TV is a fairly old Panasonic. About 7 years old. Nothing new. Nothing digital.

If you have a SNES or gamecube then you have an extra set of AV cords as they use the same type of cord. Anyway, try putting one of those in.

Hope it helps.

Did you connect the red, white, yellow cords?
Yes. Red to red, white to white, yellow to yellow.
Hmm... I've never used an n64 with AV personally.

Mine has a simple black ariel lead, with an RF modulator. like this:
I plug that into the TV and start channel surfing until I either got a black screen (game didn't start properly) or a functioning game.

If you've got an old TV, you might want to give that a try.

Not sure if you tried this or not but you might just have to go channel surfing. I know when I had one in my parents house when I hooked it up to a TV I had to go to channel 3 or 4 on the TV. It didn't work on the AV or anything like that, I needed channel 3 or 4, hell maybe even channel 2
