OP, did you know the Naked Gun movies were based on a TV Series called "Police Squad!"? They're so similar, they even share jokes. If you like the Naked Gun, check out Police Squad!
At the time Police Squad aired, it was one of the shortest running national TV shows ever.

This was well before Fox's rampage of cancelling things after two episodes, of course. Or NBC's "fuck Fox, we can top that!" rampage a few years later.

I actually prefer Police Squad to the Naked Gun, because Leslie Neilsen as a straight man in a spoof of police procedurals is way better than "funny face."

It is strange isn't it how some years go by and an age goes over. I mean movies made the same way now just utterly suck. Vampires Suck? Really? Scary Movie 4, Seriously?

I have seen Airplane, yup the first of these movies, it was an awesome movie. I expect that you have seen that one already right, it was the pre-cursor to all these leslie nielsen movies. See it if you haven't! But yes highly enjoyable!

Now I haven't seen one of them but I heard he actually played in serious movies to. A bit like Jack Nicholson playing in romantic movies! I guess I should check out where I have the DVD collection of Naked Gun. Time to watch them again.

What police squad, it is that It is vacation time I will add those movies to the quee to!

That was so disapointing - watching Police Squad and already knowing half the jokes... But still god damn good!

Some things were unique and great tho

He did quite a lot of serious movies.
I'm sure you've heard of "The Posideon Adventure." It's a classic, he plays the captain in that one.

Since catching the end of Airplane when I was a kid, I haven't been able to get enough of Leslie Nielson.
His movies not only entertained, but performed the public service or teaching people that critics don't have a fucking clue.

Just watched Airplane! last night. He will always be remembered and missed here. A true giant in comedy. Also a great person off camera, he did a lot of good work for charities.

My question is... why the fuck did they make just the one poxy series with only SIX EPISODES?!?! It so deserved more...

The apparent reason for the cancellation: "Police Squad! was cancelled because the viewer had to watch it in order to appreciate it."

[HEADING=1]WUT?![/HEADING]
That cancellation excuse was awful, but if you see the series it becomes clear.

The show was full of jokes that were delivered with a straight face and little build up. Blink, and you might lose a gag... The material worked great as a movie because people in the theater do nothing but pay attention to the screen. However, the TV series was terrible if you just watched it in the background while eating or doing something else. The executives asked them several times to add a laugh track to make the jokes more evident, but they refused. While I think they were right, it eventually hurt the appeal of the series.

In the end, it was just too good for TV.
