BASICS PEOPLE!! BASICS!!!

lets go back to some cultural background here!, being Mexicano, i kind of understand why it happened.

Most Latin american´s have NO idea about what the world of video games is about

many dont care
several more dont really give a lot of thought into the matter (just a distraction for the kids under 15, most under 13)
and the chilean miners probably have never played or even touched a video game in their entire lives

so, if i got stuck in a mine for "so many days" and i saw a "Cartoonish" character saying "welcome", my frist question would be "WTF is that?"

after receiving the answer of "A Video Game Character" OBVIOUSLY i would go Nuts! (given, i have no idea how the industry works, why they are doing it, and i would feel like they are "mocking" me)

"I´m stuck in a frikken cave and some guy is trying to promote his video game on my suffering?, is this a joke?, and wtf is that supposed to be??, me???"

soooo... in part is "not understanding the media" and in part is just plain "paranoid behaviour" but for the most part is "not knowing what the hell is that thing"
I didn't see a problem with it at first but now that you explained it like that i can see why someone might have missed the intention.

Is this horribly, terribly and horrendously inexcusable too?

Holy shit that's hilarious.

I thought that's an awesome picture and I would lvoe to be welcomed back by it. Although since they didn't let them play Dig-Dug down there it could've reminded them of the dark days.

Pretty clever Namco, put out harmless message, then pull it do to drummed up controversy making people aware of it that never would and take your side setting up Mr. Driller on...3DS or something. Shrewd business there.

They have no soul when they say that. Its a cute little boy in a blue and pink jumpsuit with a puppy. You have no soul to say that is offensive.

or, you know, slightly on the edge after being stuck in a mine for 69 days.

I don't personally think it's tasteless, but I might change my mind if I had to go through the same ordeal that they did.
I doubt that it was the miners who were complaining.
They probably weren't, but I just wanted to point out that not everyone that got upset about this deserves to be called a douchebag.

EDIT: If you are a miner or a minor, this post may be offensive :p

What would be offensive would be asking them what they did for ahem, 'entertainment' down there...

I guess Mr. Driller being all pink and gay looking with a little dog (representative of the years latest in 'doggy style') might have made them think that maybe it was a subtle 'I know what you go up to... ;)' message.

And they obviously took it the wrong way.

Heh.

Inexcusable? This is hilarious! I swear, people get butthurt over the dumbest of things.
Being stuck down a mine with 33 men for 69 days tends to do have that effect I guess.

Inexcusable?
Psh. Yeah it's not exactly a bouquet of roses, but it's a nice gesture. Mr. Driller is a... Uh... Driller, so it fits.
I'm still holding out for Simon The Driller, but it looks like we aren't seeing any of that:p

Funny how Namco isn't actually saying who complained. I guess they know most people think there was nothing offensive about it and would just love to let the complainers know it.

There would have to be some pretty compelling evidence of their non-douchebaggery to convince me.

That was my point. You don't think their being trapped in a mine for that long is compelling enough reason for them to be able to complain about the Namco page without being called a "douchebag"?

I dunno if they were the ones that actually complained, but if anyone has a right to it's the miners themselves.

But again, it wasn't the miners complaining. It was random douchebags.

Fair enough. I didn't realize that. I was just noting that if it was the miners that were complaining, they really shouldn't be labeled as douchebags.

It's a cute image. I dunno. Mr Driller clearly just feels for his brothers in the mining community. Especially after that incident where he was almost killed by a bubble blowing flower. He bets that guy started this cave-in too.

Well, over coming adversity doesn't necessarily preclude someone from being a douchebag, but I agree in principle.
