Fallout 3 made me incredibly interested in the lore of Fallout to make me realize that it completely screwed up a lot of key aspects and have completely crappy story compared to the rest of the series. It's still one of my favorite games of all times, though, don't get me wrong. I just know that it's not as up to par in story telling as the rest of the series, and that I'm now much more engaged in what happened before the bombs fell.

Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Team Fortress 2 & Half Life 2
Fallout 3
Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon
Persona 3 & 4 (Not just the Persona series, but the entire Shin Megami Tensei series in general)
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

The most beneficial out of all of those would probably have to be Disgaea. Those games are some great time sinks.

Final Fantasy VIII was my first which lead me to love 9, 7, 6, 4, 10 and, 2. I also blame FF8 for me playing Dirge of Cerberus and, Chocobo's Dungeon 2.

Link to the Past was my first and while I loved Twilight Princess, Link's Adventure was the most satisfying one for me.

Red Faction Guerrilla was the reason I later tried Red Faction 1...then I was disillusioned.

My first Mega Man game was actually Mega Man 64 (ie: Mega Man Legends) and from there I moved on the Battle Net 2 then on to the classic (MM2 and MMX)

I bought a Fallout collection box after having played either Fallout 3 or, New Vegas. I liked Fallout a bit more even though I hate the 30 day counter but I didn't make it far in either game.

I don't work backwards; If I'm interested in a new game, I'll try the first game in the franchise first & work my way up.

I try to never play a sequel before I play the first one. If I were to play a sequel beforehand, it would probably only be so because of the original game being older.

Though I didn't get into the backlog of titles until after Skyrim was released, Oblivion is what set me off into the Elder Scrolls series. Especially the lore.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to play much of Arena or Daggerfall, (Fuck Morrowind; that combat is just terribad.) 'cause I own a Mac. There wouldn't happen to be some sort of port I've missed, would there?

Shin megami tensei Devil survivor, I liked turn based strategy this delivered in spades while also giving its own feel, made me check out earlier titles like Persona 3, Shin megaten Nocturne, Persona 4, Raidou Kuzunoha, Digital devil saga, all I would recommend (except maybe Kuzunoha) So yeah I have a game that got me into older titles, also fallout 3 got me to play fallout 1 both are also great.

Final Fantasy VIII. ;)
(Seriously-- I played it first, then tried out FFVII after shocked reactions from several friends. I've since played IX, X, X-2, and a paltry amount of VI and the very first one.)

The pending release of StarCraft 2 got me to finally play through the campaign of the original... WoW and Deus Ex: Human Rev. also definitely interested me in the lore of prior games in their respective franchises, though I've yet to play them.

In general, if I get interested in a series I'll try to play it from the beginning-- which is why I still haven't gotten around to DragonAge. Oops.
Completely off topic, is your Avatar from The Cat From Outer Space?

Tomb Raider III was fun. The earlier ones were significantly easier, I found out later.

My first Elder Scrolls game was Oblivion.

I have Saints Row III, and am considering getting Saints Row II.

Etc.

I played MGS4 before any others and I played Metroid Prime 3 before any other Metroid game.

The amount of hype for skyrim made me go back and buy Oblivion and Morrowind before the game even came out! I've yet to do morrowind proper justice but I feel like I've played as much of oblivion as I'm going to (except maybe to play Nehrim sometime)

That's the only one I can think of.

Assassin's Creed 2. Early last year, my Dad brought it home from work after borrowing it from a friend. I was a bit annoyed, because I NEVER jump into a game series from anywhere but the beginning when I can help it. But, I clenched my teeth and sat down with it anyway. Eighteen months later, Assassin's Creed is my third favrorite game franchise, and I've played all four games and am anxiously awaiting AC3.

Final Fantasy XII was my first FF. I've now played all of the main games, except the MMOs.
Metal Gear Solid 3 made me play the rest of the series.
Fallout 3 and Oblivion made me discover those series.
I started the Legacy of Kain series with Soul Reaver 2. I didn't understand any of it at first, but it was intriguing enough for me to track down the previous games. Fuck am I glad I did. One of the best stories in videogame history.

Resident evil 4 made me check out the earlier games. I liked them too, although in a different way.
Metroid, Zelda, and Mario are series I have played out of order.
Metroid Prime, Ocarina of Time (although I had played the original Zelda first) and Super Mario bros 3 were the games that got me in the series.

I started with Saints Row 2, went and got Saints Row, I liked it, but really wish I'd played it in order. The transition wasn't great.

Resident Evil 4. I knew it was different from the older games, but I was still struck by just how different. Replace a couple characters and it could be from a whole different series!

Persona 3 Portable was my gateway into the wonderful world of MegaTen games.

Not sure if this counts, but I only tried the original (2d) Prince of Persia because I loved Sands of Time on PS2.

After I finished Borderlands I stumbled upon the original 16-bit version. Still a pretty solid game.

For me it's Persona 3 as well, after I played it I went back and played the first Persona and I have to say I was surprised by how different it was. I'm slowly working my way through the other MegaTen games but a lot are a pain in the ass to find.
