Want your opinion heard? Have questions for the staff? Now's your chance!

Every week, from Wednesday through Friday, staff will be dropping in and out of the thread to post responses to the question below and reply to yours. From there, feel free to keep the discussion going until next Wednesday when a new topic goes up. We may even respond over the weekend while we're playing Genre Wars [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/content/genrewars].

Consider this your chance to join us in some lively debating and hopefully good times. We can't wait to discuss.

This week's discussion topic is: Name a game you've loved despite it belonging to a genre you hate. For instance, did you love Cho Aniki even though you generally don't like shooters?

I am not a big racing game fan at all. But, after buying Gran Turismo 3 in 2003 I briefly became a car fan to the point that I was thoroughly convinced I needed a real RX7 with twin turbos in order for my life to be complete. I also loved the extensive information it gave on car manufacturers and models.

I tried to get into GT4 but just couldn't get interested again. I was especially disappointed that the game had less information on all the manufacturers and models.

Tales of Symphonia, I usually hate JRPG's but this one had a great story (even though it was very slow to start) and the combat system was brilliant. I actually felt like I was doing something instead of hitting A over and over for the attack command and then sitting back while the characters did the actions and not me.

I find most FPS games boring, but I did enjoy Metroid Prime: Hunters for the DS. I was pretty impressed that they were able to take the elements of a Metroid game (exploring different worlds, solving puzzles, collecting artifacts and weapons) and shrink them down to a handheld platform so well. It felt like an actual Metroid game, and not just a watered-down shooter with a name slapped on it. What it did do different was focus on the combat rather than the exploration, and I enjoyed how it was implemented into the storyline. Running into and fighting other bounty hunters along the way helped immerse the idea that Samus was racing against others to find an "ultimate power" before it fell into the wrong hands. Oddly enough, I enjoyed Hunters more than I enjoyed Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.

Not to run off on a tangent, but Metroid Prime 3: Corruption was a very overrated game in my opinion. It really didn't have that feeling of exploring a vast mysterious and strange planet that defined the previous games. That said, I'm really looking forward to playing Prime 2 as an enhanced Wii addition.

Idunno i don't really hate a certain Genre, i do dislike racing games a lot though. I have yet to play a game that would be the "exception to the rule" so to speak

I'm not so sure about that. I liked exploring in MP3, if only because the music on Elysia was awesome, and the story (which you have to get through scans) of Bryyo was so tragically awesome.

As for the topic, platformers usually aren't my thing, but I fell head over heels for Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Mirror's Edge.

I despise halfassed sandboxing games like what GTA became after 3; but Saints Row 2 just does it for me.

I can't stand sports games but if anybody remembers Blades of Steel, or WWF Wrestling then you know why I like those.

Stealth games are boring, but Beyond Good & Evil rocked.

You stole mine.
ToS. I'm not a fan of JRPG's, but it is one of my favorite games.
Shame what they did to the sequel...

Well if you mention racing I have to mention Mario Kart. Its so different from the others yet doesnt feel like a racing game. I like other racers like Wipeout but when you think of racing games you think of those rediculously meticulous games that spend so much time on realism. These were just fun.

Yet we're all familiar with Mario Kart cheapness; you could be half the track ahead when Bowser starts going 300mph with perfect traction and no competition to drive his fat ass over your kart 50 feet from the finish line.

And I'll never forget the Seven-Blue-Shell-Rape lap on Yoshi Circuit in Double Dash.
