I am very much a believer in the games are art argument, but I struggle to describe and list games that I personally describe as 'arty'.

I throw this question to all of you. Name an arty game and why you consider it to be that way.

Okami should be a great example.

And Shadow of the Colossus of course.

Shadow of the Colossus for the way that it handles the narrative. It was a very singular experience that depended a lot on the interpretation of the individual. It was thought-provoking and awe-inspiring, both visually and psychologically. That is the epitome of an "art game" to me. Braid touches on this as well.

I never quite understood what an 'arty' game was. I kind of consider all games to be artful, because of all the work that goes into making them look nice these days.

So I nominate every game ever.

And also Borderlands.

EDIT: Oh also, Time Fcuk.(Yes, that is actually how it is spelled.) It is a really beautiful thing when a flash game can suck you in with its atmosphere.

I'd say a lot of games could be considered artsy.

Bioshock, Halo and Gears of War all have a distinctive style to them (look at the Covenant's weapons, vehicles etc.).

Halo goes with the kind of sophisticated sleek look to everything.

Gears has a very gothic feel to it:

Whereas Bioshock is very Art Deco.

The Void it's fucking amazing but you will need this to cool down the obnoxious difficulty also Passage

Also GET THE VOID! it's to awesome for words and needs a lot more publicity than it currently gets!

The Longest Journey. Beautifully written, great art design and the sense of a tangible world is beyond compare. The best point and click games ever got. Even *gasp* better than Grim Fandango, in my opinion.

And the special edition of the not quite as good but still very good sequel Dreamfall also includes a copy of The Longest Journey.

Silent Hill 2 could be considered art for the same reasons.

And there's also Okami, Psychonauts, No More Heroes, Prince of Persia, etc. A lot of the same answers here.
