The artsiest games I've ever played would have to be BioShock and Viewtiful Joe. I've seen gameplay of Shadow of the Colossus, so I can agree that it's artsy as well. A friend of mine has both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, which he offered to let me borrow sometime. I've heard about The Longest Journey, and Okami looks really visually stunning. I've also heard that Indigo Prophecy is pretty artsy. I know I haven't played a lot of the games I've just mentioned, but I'm sure I'll get to them eventually.

Oh well, to me, most video games are art. And I say most, because for every Okami, you have an equally crappy Two Worlds.

The Longest Journey. Beautifully written, great art design and the sense of a tangible world is beyond compare. The best point and click games ever got. Even *gasp* better than Grim Fandango, in my opinion.

And the special edition of the not quite as good but still very good sequel Dreamfall also includes a copy of The Longest Journey.

Agreed, I haven't got far in TLJ, but every location is very pretty.

Also, the Dear Ester mod for HL2.

Visually:
- All the hand-drawn Japanese games. Legend of Mana, Muramasa, all of those
- Okami
- Braid

Non-visually:
- Like mentioned multiple times, Shadow of the Colossus
- Braid
i see shadow of the colossus as visual art.

it's beautiful in so many ways.

Borderlands is a work of art, it's a brilliant show of how many games have become - even Randy Pitchford has pointed out that the game works best if you don't actually read the mission text, you just go out and kill stuff because the game tells you to.

I'd also argue that Saints Row 2 is an arty game based on how it manages to take the dark, grimy world of gang violence and make it bright, colourful and utterly comedic in an industry which is striving more and more for realism.

Going further back, I still have a soft spot for Bill's Tomato Game as quite an artsy game, but more in a modern art "what the fuck is going on" kind of thing.

I am very much a believer in the games are art argument, but I struggle to describe and list games that I personally describe as 'arty'.

I throw this question to all of you. Name an arty game and why you consider it to be that way.
You don't need to look for a specific game, because any game has so many aspects of art it's practically lactating artistic juices. Just for a list:

1 concepts (drawing)
2 models (sculpture)
3 voice acting (standard acting)
4 animation (movies/ performance art)
5 soundtracks (music)
6 cinematography (doesn't even need an explanation)

Needless to say, art is thoroughly part of the game-making process, but you need to stop thinking so traditionally about "art". If it's an expression of someone's thoughts/feelings/views or such, then it's art, and no self-respecting art critic can deny that without proving that they're close-minded hypocrites. All games are art, they're just a new and unique form of it.

I completely agree, never got round to finishing Dreamfall but The Longest Journey is an adventure game beyond compare.

Echochrome. It's based off of the works of MC Escher, and it looks alot like his Tessellations. THAT is art, my friend.

Tough call, haven't really thought much about that.

Max Payne?

Unless you're just talking atmosphere in the game as far as graphics goes.
I love the way the story is presented in Max Payne, that should count, right?
