I wish I would've been older while playing Morrowind for the first time. I was 13-14 years old(around a year after release iirc) and was completely clueless since I had never played a game like it before. It wasn't until last year, with the overhaul mod, that I actually got anywhere in the game. After 50 hours, however, I was bored out of my mind. Too much running about and the poor graphics still bothered me.

Doesn't entierly fit with the thread, but it's the only one I can think of. Most of my major addictions through life(Diablo II, WoW, LOTRO, Counter-Strike) were played close to their release dates.
The Secret World might count though. Got it during the Halloween sale and have played halfway through the current zones in the game. There are tons of puzzles in the quests that are extremely hard to figure out, so I've gotten used to just Googling the answer.
Must've been fun to play during launch and help each other with the quests, rather than constantly tabbing out to find the next solution.

Final Fantasy X. In general, I wish I picked up the PS2 sooner. I've only recently had it for the past year or so.

Empire Earth and Alpha Centauri. mechanics are great and its awesome game, yet after seeing how much other games managed to improve the UI for those two it just feels so strange to to use this old UI. Not that the game is bad, but it would be much more comfortable if it had a UI overhaul.

Deus Ex, time didnt spare this game......

I'd like to say Planescape: Torment, but I'd have been roughly 10 at that time and would not have been interested. Instead I'll say Planescape: Torment, but at the age of 15 when I had the free time necessary to get into something like that, and also the interest.

Red dead redemption so i could have got the achievement for 1st in 3 consecutive free-for-alls...those achievements are always piss easy when a game first comes out. I didn't play it for 9 months and everyone was pretty good by the time i got around to multiplayer so it was sadly the only 1 i missed.

Not that many actually. I regularly play older games thanks to steam, GOG and some hardcore followings releasing patches and graphical mods (system shock 2, vampire bloodlines, thief etc).

There are a few though: GTA vice city: Love the style and the story is quite good. But the combat is just broken at this point.

The first system shock: The creepy/ isolated atmosphere is still very much there as well as shodan being awesome. But the baffling UI by any standards and the "old school" maze-like levels killed the enjoyment for me 3-4 levels in. Which is too bad, I REALLY wanted to like that game.

Quite a few games are still awesome though :) (like the ones I mentioned before) But the nicest surprise was buying deus ex 1 for the ps2 (the inferior version I know now) for 99 pence. Literally knowing NOTHING about it except remembering it kept cropping up in "top ten" lists in magazines (remember when we used to buy game mags?) and liking the box art. My body wasn't ready... Once I saw the destroyed statue of liberty I knew I was in for a treat.
