I would also like to toss in my vote for Kingdom Hearts 2. It continued the storyline well, and they added quite a bit to the gameplay.

I preferred The Evil Dead II to The Evil Dead, but it might have been other circumstances coloring my opinions.

Also, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence seemed better than the original GITS. EDIT: The plots of the two are loosely linked. I don't know if that falls in your "true sequel" pile.

This can be anything from a movie, to a book, to a game, but I just haven't found any sequels that were better than their originals.

And what I mean by a true sequel is that it continues a story, NOT like the Call Of Duty series where Call Of Duty 2 and Call of Duty 3 were both completely diferent.
Dark Knight, Terminator 2, Aliens, Grand Theft Auto 3, Empire Strikes Back, and probably the second time you had sex.

Probably already named, but Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and At World's End. Also, Settlers 6 > Settlers 5, 4 and 3 (though not 2 or 1). And perhaps you can also say that Warcraft 3 > Warcraft 2 > Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, though all three were masterpieces for their time and can't really be compared properly.
No. No no no no no no no. PotC:DMC and AWE were absolutely ATROCIOUS. How, man, could you possibly think thus? Dead Man's Chest at least was less criminal than the third one, but neither can really be called better than the original.

Sonic 2, From Russia with Love. I don't know if this is allowed to count but the Discworld series certainly got better as it went along.
Discworld definitely has gotten better and better as it's gone along. But in terms of mini-series', I'd say that Rincewind and the Watch has gotten better over the others over time.

But here's my list
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2
Super Mario Thousand Year Door
Mario Kart: Double Dash! (The pinnacle so far)
Guitar Hero 2 over any of the others
Dark Coud 2
SSBB > SSBM > SSB
Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World
Coming to America was better than Trading Places

Aliens > Alien
That's exactly what I thought when I saw the title of this thread. And the ones that followed were just terrible.
The ones that followed also gave no credit to Hans Reudi Giger, the bastards...
As far as I know, he was only involved w/ Alien and Alien 3.
WRONG!
He was involved in one and 2. They used his designs in 3 but NEVER gave him credit. he doesn't even appear in the credits.

Aliens > Alien
Red Alert 2 > Red Alert
Fallout 2 > Fallout 1 (Fallout 3, while fun, wasn't as fun as 2 for me)
Terminator 2 > Terminator
And a bunch of others.

Edit: Empire Strikes Back >>>>>>> A New Hope

I might go for the Splinter Cell sequels. Not that the first was bad, but the later ones were quite a bit better for me.

NHL 09 > NHL 08 > NHL 07 > NHL 06

As shocking as it has been, EA has actually managed to make each NHL game starting with NHL 07 a vast improvement over its predecessor. NHL 10 looks to be absolutely fantastic and make it three years running that a hockey game is awarded Sports game of the Year.

I disagree here. I agree that Storm of Swords is by far the best in the series, but A Game of Thrones is better than Clash of Kings. Other than a few key parts, I felt Clash of Kings drug its feet a bit. Plus, A Game of Thrones had probably the most memorable, game-changing event in any book I've read (no spoilers here, but if you've read the series I'm sure you know what I'm referring to.)
Hmm, maybe, but I gotta say, the Battle of the Blackwater was pretty fucking spectacular. That, and I really took to Davos as a character (but I still hate Jon Snow)
