Tribes 2. It's a old PC scifi-FPS game(2001) about Jetpacks, team-based multiplayer, and probably the most fun I've ever had.

Anachronox: A turn-based RPG made by the same guys who made Deus Ex. It's a hilarious tunr-based sci-fi of true greatness. Truely.

Penumbra, both Overture and Black Plague by Frictional Games.

Better than Amnesia imo (in the survival horror genre), though maybe im biased towards the semi scifi feel of it.

Badly rated does not equal underground and under-appreciated, and unheard of, and other similar statements. It means badly rated and badly reviewed.

As in, games that did not get the good reviews it deserved.

An example of that, in my opinion, would be Sonic Riders. Indeed flawed, but an insanely addicting racing game that really is just fun and easy to pick up and whoosh through.

Same with pretty much every Sonic game that is hated. Yes, even Sonic 2006 is better than it was made out to be.

And yes, I'm going to say it, Final Fantasy XIV. It may be lacking in many ways, but it has a surprising amount to offer. As well as many improvements over some God awful things in Final Fantasy XI. Since the game is widely regarded as so horrible, I consider it underrated.

And just because it's on my mind I'm going to give an extra mention to Final Fantasy X. Initially, it was a very, very, incredibly high rated game that sent shockwaves throughout the gaming industry at it's first release. Now, however, came days of "Ben Yahztee Croshaws" and "Spoony Experiments" and people who have found it their hobby to whine about Tidus and androgyny and anyone outside of gender norms as this horrible Japanese agenda against gender and race. And it is so popular, ever so popular to hate this game and it's fans.

Welp, too bad, it's an excellent game no matter how bad you underrate it.

Ohhhhh, I thought you were insinuating that that the Wii version wasn't worth the praise or something.

Glad that's sorted.

How has no one said Rocket: Robot on Wheels? How dare you. That game had one of the first console physics engines ever, and it was done by a young Sucker Punch before Sly Cooper or InFamous came out. The gameplay was like a warm, gooey mash-up of Banjo-Kazooie and Rayman 2. The music isn't great, but it suits the game perfectly, combining carnival music, jazz, and gospel (And it works, shockingly enough). The puzzles are challenging, but not TV-obliteratingly difficult. And in the first level of the game, you can build and ride your own roller coaster. If you still have an N64 and haven't played Rocket, fix that problem.

I'd also throw out Spyro 2, Sly 3, Pokemon Stadium 2, Kirby Air Ride, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, Ratchet: Deadlocked, Okami, and Destroy All Humans 2.

TOTALLY AGREE!!!! Did you ever play Tribes: Vengeance? Its story mode wasn't anything special but it definitely was fun online. I've spent hundreds of hours thoroughly enjoying both!

Grim Fandango.
Great game, but I'd be hard pressed to call it underrated, since it's pretty much unanimously considered the greatest adventure game of all time (with Monkey Island and The Longest Journey nipping at its heels).
And Sam & Max!
I like all the Sam and Max games, from Hit the Road to the last S&M (tee hee) chapter from Telltale. But I'd be hard pressed to rank any of them with those games. That's just me though.

I forgot another (genuinely) underrated game: Singularity. It's not going to set the world on fire, so to speak, but it's a genuinely fun, well-made nuclear apocalypse shooter that Lackovision kind of threw to the wolves. I'd recommend it to any FPS fan without hesitation.
I see a quote train approaching the station... I picked up Singularity the other day. I don't mind it, it's certainly got it's merits.

Geneforge - Very creative setting. Later games deal intelligently with politics. Great RPG.

Heroes of Might and Magic IV - The campaigns are very well written. The last two campaigns, Half-Dead and Pirate's Daughter are superb.

I was thinking about how there are a lot of great games that get overshadowed by big titles like call of duty or battlefield. What are some great underrated games?

Here is my list:

Ico
Kirby: The Crystal Shards (have not played Return to Dreamland Yet)
Cave Story
Pokemon Snap
Yoshi's Story
Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness
Sonic Generations
007 Nightfire
3D Dot Game Heroes
Alan Wake

Edit: If anyone cares, I was thinking of starting a lets play channel where I play underrated games
Goodness, you hit the nail right on the head. I actually read the Alan Wake novel and I really enjoyed it. Also, Pokemon Snap is one of my favorite games. Add Street Cleaning Simulator to that list, though.

Run Like Hell.

Seriously awesome scifi/survival horror, great Mass Effect-esque setting. Way before its time. Unfortunately, it flew under the radar since the development was rough so the story is way better-done than its gameplay.
