I use a lot of different names depending on what kind of character and game. But I named my last Oblivion character, an evil magician, Shrewkin.

In open-world sandbox "silent avatar"-type games (Morrowind, Oblivion, Mount&Blade, etc.) I usually name the character after myself, but sometimes I get a little silly with it. I named my Argonian "Stand-Up Chameleon", started the game by typing "player.setAV Chameleon 100", and let hilarity ensue. I'm thinking of doing a timed run through the game seeing how fast I can beat everything from a standing start using that particular cheat. I put the over/under at 10 hours.

Either Hattori or Artemis, after my 2 favorite assassins, Hattori Hanzo the Iga ninja and Artemis Entrie from the Forgotten realms series.
If its an online game than I just go with RavingPenguin.

In every RPG it's always the default name given, I feel that deviating from that name lessens the intentions of the original designer and makes the character weaker throughout.

If I actually have to make up a name... uh... depends on the game. It doesn't happen often and now I can't actually think of any...

Almost always "Adfest" unless I don't like the characters. I won't repeat what I named "Titus".

Usually it's "Eclectic Dreck". In RPG's I tend to either use the random name generator or string together characters myself until I have a proununcable word. A few times, I've come up with a fitting name based on a character archetype, but it usually has to be REALLY obscure to have not already been taken (you can pretty much assume any name taken from the lore, greek/roman/viking myth, fantasy novels, or the Thesarus are already taken).

Derwydd (welsh for druid)
wordsmith (anything FPS- L4D, TF2 etc)
Link (zelda games)
Other than that I go with what I'm given, or hit the name generator until I like the sound. My KOTOR character was called Kalva Usipode. I'm guessing he was Asian/French?
