Hmmm, lemme' think... It's kinda hard differentiating between the ones I like most and the ones I play most. There's so many games that would vie for this list but here goes:

5. Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3
4. Halo: Reach
3. Terraria
2. Shadowrun
1. Oblivion

I have to say, the runners up to this list would include Skyrim, Modern Warfare, Team Fortress 2, and Halo Wars.

1. Halo: Reach and Halo 3 (Xbox 360)
2. Pokemon Diamond/Platinum (DS)
3. Fallout 3 (Xbox 360)
4. Dead Space (Xbox 360)
5. Mass Effect 2 (Xbox 360)

My actual top ten list has quite the mix of older games.

Close Comers:

I'll explain why they're on the list, but I'm only putting a game in if I played it more than once and thought/dreamt about it when I wasn't playing, that seems to be my definition of greatness.

Demon's Souls/Dark Souls - Honestly this is a tie. Sometimes I love the classic 1-1, 2-1 level design, but the open world-like approach of Dark was a nice change of pace too. I couldn't pick "the better one" if I tried all day. Amazing controls/mechanics, makes you plan and think, emotional reward for accomplishment and marks the first time I "lunged" in RL when getting hit in a looong time. Beauty.

Red Dead Redemption - The amazing thing about this being on the list is that I had no love for westerns, cowboys, or horses going into this game. But the story was gripping, and the MMO style setup made for some addicting play. I've never played a GTA through to the end, this was a step above for me.

Super Mario Galaxy - More than I could have expected. Subtle use of Wii controls without overdoing it and feeling gimmicky, a perfect blend of old and new. Just plain fun and made me smile a lot, which is an important reminder sometimes when things get way serious.

The Binding Of Issac - I wasn't super excited for this because SMB was on and off for me, but the price was right...then WOW. Every playthough a different experience, and a sublime blend of shooter, dungeon crawler, and loot collecting. I put way too many hours into this game, and loved every second of it. I recommend JoytoKey and controllering it up.

Mass Effect - I thought about putting DA:O here, but I cared more for ME's characters and played through it more times. When I finished this game I thought this would be the next generation's Star Wars (timeless as that may be), 2 and 3 just didn't speak to me the same way, the love and care was missing. And I'm one of the crazy people who enjoyed the Mako and exploring the planets for every little thing on the checklist.

Thanks for this topic OP, a lot of good recommendations I haven't played and making this list reminded me that I really need to play Galaxy 2.

1) Portal 2

2) Portal 1

3) Dead Space 2

4) Call of Duty 4

5) Fallout: New Vegas

Very honorable mentions go to Bastion, Minecraft, Journey, and Bioshock. The Half-Life 2 Episodes should also get a mention, since the only reason they didn't make the main list is because they're not exactly standalone games, and I usually just lump them in with Half-Life 2 (a previous generation game) as if they were one game.

In no particular order:

- Portal (for the awesome puzzles and for making me laugh)
- Bastion (for the hacky-slashy action and for making me cry)
- Borderlands (for the many wonderful hours spent playing coop with my boyfriend)
- Devil May Cry 4 (for being every bit as ridiculous as I think an action game should be)
- Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers (for being the ultimate after-work chill-out game)

Don't judge me on MtG, OK? I've clocked up over 60 hours on that beautiful, beautiful time-waster!

Honourable mentions are probably Assassin's Creed (for the free-running feeling), Dragon Age: Origins (for the second best game dialogue I've ever come across - right behind the Portal games) and Torchlight (for just being plain, stupid fun).

Ooof, hard question. For a start, I'm not entirely positive what you mean by this gen as I'm a PC gamer - I assume you mean anything since the dawn of PS3/360, aye? I'll go with some general things as a game from a few 'categories', cause my actual top 5 would be pretty boring (Skyrim, Oblivion, both new Fallout games with preference on F3 would already make the 4)

Well, Morrowind falls out of this gen, so as a TES fan, I'll go with Skyrim as I prefer it to Oblivion (won't name it, but it's there as well). Predictable, I know, but hey, I just love me some TES games, giant worlds are really my thing. F3 actually comes pretty close here as well (yes, F:NV had better gameplay, but F3 was just awesome story/experience wise)

A shout out to Portal as well purely for the sake of originality. Loved the concept, excellent execution. P2 was great as well, but the first game was more groundbreaking (although I really liked the addition of more story in the second game, makes for a fantastic game to introduce people to gaming with)

Bastion wins as my indie title. Really blown away by it, I'm not an indie games person and Bastion really sucked me in to try a lot of indie titles. The game was simply beautiful though, every single piece of it, graphics, music and of course the narration. Even the gameplay was pretty fun.

I'll jump to Battlefield 3 as my multiplayer/FPS game. It's not perfect, but I'm a massive fan of the old Battlefield games and it was nice to see the series make a comeback. It's executed really well and I've gotten a lot of hours of gameplay out of it and plan to get more once Armored Kill and maybe some other DLC hits the shelves (CQ ain't really my thing, as I've mentioned before, I like big open maps and the reason I love the BF series so much is the dynamic gameplay that comes out of large open spaces and vehicle warfare).

Mass Effect 2 was my favourite in the series. It's the first one I played and I played it a while after it came out, I actually tried it while I was out of games and browsing through Yahtzee's old reviews looking for something interesting. Loved every bit of it, though I wish I played through the original game first, it took me several attempts to get over the lack of all the improvements the second game brought in.

Oh that makes 5. Damn. Well screw it, I wanna throw out one more title that I just have to put here. Consider it a buffer to choosing all the popular titles, I wanna throw out something I think people should try.

Alpha Protocol. Yes, the game had issues. The story was standard (fun, but not exactly a masterpiece), graphics and level design reeked of a game made some 10 years ago, combat and leveling, while fun, were really unbalanced and the minigames had an infuriatingly steep difficulty curve, starting from easy and ending up at "lol, hope you brought some EMP charges". However. As I've mentioned, the story and combat are fun. The stealth gameplay feel like old Splinter Cell games like Chaos Theory with some RPG elements throwing awesome powers in. And most importantly the dialogue system. It really needs to spread to more games, the dialogue in that game flowed so beautifully and made for such an amazing experience, I just couldn't be impressed with any other dialogue system in other games like DA, ME2, Skyrim etc. The dialogue options actually had an effect on both the current conversation and the future gameplay and it really felt like a part of the game and not something that was tacked on. Can't recommend it enough, it's a diamond in the rough.

hmmm.... tough choices

1. GTA IV: The Lost and Damned
2. Red Dead Redemption (desperately in need of a PC release)
3. Battlefield 3 (multiplayer only, the campaign was pretty poor)
4. Skyrim
5. Mass Effect 1 + 2 (haven't played 3, lost my save as I assumed they were on Steam Cloud)

To be fair, I don't really play that many games, I just play a select few a lot.

Portal 2
Fallout New Vegas
Arkham Asylum
Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Yes, that's more than five; no, I do not care that I put more than five; yes, I realize you most likely will not take umbrage with the fact that I put more than five.
