I usually name my characters Flarvii or Balistora.

But I have to worship the guy who invented the "Generate Name" button.

I have 2 simple methods:

1: If it's a futuristic style game of any sort, you can't go wrong with a biblical first name and a 1 syllable last name. My favorite is Mordecai Toth. Which, crazily enough, I used for the first time playing "Star Wars:Galaxies" way back when. You could have knocked me over when I saw it as the name of one of the characters in "Dawn of War"

2: If its a fantasy\Medieval style game, I think of a common name for the present day and then change a few consonants around that can still achieve the same basic sound. Eran instead of Aaron, Eryka instead of Erica, just to give you an idea. As for a last name I usually try to stick with a concrete word like Shale or Card.

I find, in a truly freakish way, that I derive just as much joy from rolling new characters as I do from playing them.

I use different names, that I make up by typing random things on the keyboard and move the letters around a little.
Name Generators use way to typical names imo, and it's more satisfying to come up with names your self.

Online I use DrSpaceman. (Obviously)

In single-player I use Kevin DuBois. Why? A friend of mine and I named my KOTOR character this because of a Homestar Runner reference. (It's a bit bastardized, but what the hell.) For some reason, it's totally stuck. Been my single-player game name for nearly six years now as a result.

(And hell, if you take WoW as an example... People SERIOUSLY blow at picking names. I'm happy you can't use numbers, or it'd be pure madness)
It's so true, it almost hurts.

There are some really good ones, though you should be able to expect at least a fraction of the gigantic population of WoW to have some kind of wit or imagination. But then there are, naturally, the kids who play blood elves that name their character something along the lines of "Tittymcawesome"

Also, if you think WoW is bad, you should see Maplestory (which on a side note is the worst game EVER), where you CAN use numbers in your name. I don't think I saw a single somewhat serious name, save from my own, during the brief period I found myself playing that dreary suckfest of a game.

Random name generators anyone?

I've used them for Sims games in the past. Nowadays I usually just use my first name, or a variation of it, and pick the last name of my favourite famous person at the time. Not always mind you.

If it's a game with very race-specific names then I can take hours until I mash the keyboard frantically and come up with something that sounds good, then merely make it phonetic and applicable to that race. I had an argonian called 'Whatever-Works' at one point.

Thank you, sir! You have been most helpful, and I appreciate your expertise.
More like .. Almost .. You're just missing a couple of dots. It's "TodesHändler" "Handler" is not really anything =P
Close enough though =P Also "toten" kinda means death too.

On topic again ...
I mainly look around and see what others with the same race as I (NPC's) are called, and name it somewhat same. Like on Oblivion I called this ... Nord or something "Seulangio" I love that name =D

Banana Phone, what an ace name!

I oddly use foreign languages, words that mean colours, not sure how it started.
Failing that, as they are often too short, I go for the geeky "name after a brain part or type of glial cell" coz thats what i study.

Although for Soul Calibur 4 the name Selina just popped into my head, having not met someone with that name before, that was kinda strange.

Any variation on the name Raden. I like it because I've not only used it for a lot of things but it fits well into fantasy universes as an actual name.
Some variations include:
Raeden
Raiden (Its own name in istelf)
Riaden
The name that is the least like Raden I have (Other then my own name and one time Chrono and all times Link) is Ridenore.
Named a guy FweWewe once. Laughed like a maniac whenever my dad read it aloud, mainly because it ways the Sims and it was his character represantation. And I call him fat (He is in on the joke and thinks it's funny, don't worry).
