My favorite name is Reaper, I got known as a badass and everyone called me Reaper on guildwars. It stuck, I'd never change it.

I go through a careful process, looking at character type and backgro... hell no!
I have an incredible "impulse" naming ability, and the names always sound very foreign or very non real... Ill give you some examples.

My recent one is: Edraii Karziko - Read this with a very russian-ish accent, if you do it right, it sounds quite good.
Some past ones I remember are, "Raine Farlitz" "Cryth Mergafht" and "Zeitherr Arthouff" - Those are only a few.
Try to read them with a heavy non-standard accent, heavy on the Z and those kinds of sounds.

I guess I'm the roleplaying type when it comes to naming, I never use any resebelance to my real name online, I used to go under "Nikomas" on most sites, but were I could change my name, it's now Edraii.

That reminds me, I oughta change my XBL name...

Oh yeah, also, on a scale 1-10, how are my names? Call me strange, but I really like some of them. Especially Edraii and Raine, Always have last names, always!

I usually name my character Pico, or if it's female, Picoko (Ko is japanese for female, so it makes it a girl)

On the other hand, many people have told me that Pico is actually a woman's name, so that Picoko is redundent...

Dull thread...
Posting for the sake of another post count, perhaps?
I notice you're post count is at thirty-ONE now, eh, Azaredel? *nudge nudge* ;)
Oh snap! I've been found out!
Don't worry. I won't tell anyone. heh heh... My count seems to be going up too.

On a side note; I just remembered one of the worst names I've ever seen in an online game: JesusBadman
That's hilarious! Best name ever: StrategicBanana. My buddy uses that based on his strategy when he picked up a banana in Mario Cart.

It depends on the type of game,

Military games it's usually Leon Saxon, or Cpl. Leon Saxon - The name I wish I had

Fantasy games it's usually Vanilor Wolfwood - Canilor is from Eragon and I love Trigun, hence the Wolfwood.

Other games it varies extremely.

i call my self brunt, or brunt32 because of a school name what went to far, and now my day to day name.
That happened to me too. I usually use the name Fetus13 and it has the stupidest story about it.

I name my characters Beacon in every game I play. It's ben my nickname for years and it makes a pretty decent name.

I lied actually...in every Legend of Zelda, I name my character Link...I just feel that that SHOULD BE his name...but in every OTHER game...I'm Beacon

I use a number of Random Name generators found on google. Usually i take the essence of a name I find there and change it some. I have used ancient and fantasy languages as well. Primarily Norse and Warhammer Dwarf ( Khazalid ). Also my wife has a baby name book she uses at work, as she has trouble spelling peoples names, which i use from time to time as well.
Either that or pure Divine inspiration, a name just pops into my head.

First time through, usually go with default names or name them after myself.

If I've played the game before, I typically name the characters a four-or-fewer-character, all-caps description of their gameplay role. In an RPG, for instance, I might have three characters named NUKE, TANK, and HEAL. HIT, HURT, ROB, CAST, FAST, FLEE, SING, BURN, and ZAP are also excellent choices. If there's a well-rounded hero in this naming scheme, the only possible name is AAAA.

Another fun option is to name all the player characters after important NPCs, and then see if the story makes more sense.

If it's not roleplaying, I always use the name Thirsk (which is both the name of an english city, a place in the expansion Bloodmoon for Morrowind and a name for an old nordic god of fertility, should anyone be interested). The exception that proves the rule is whenever I play an FPS. Then in most cases it's Gonad, named after the Zero Punctuation review. Because the name to me now seems rather retarded (no offence to any Gonads out there) and I generally don't feel that characters in FPSes are any smart.

If it's fantasy, however, I usually see if the culture of my character borrows from a particular culture from real life and then finds a name based on the language of said culture, being linguistically interested as I am. For example, nords/dwarves/generic barbariandudes I generally give old norse names, either actual names (Like Sigurd or Thorbjorn) or names that mean something (like Svellhond ("Icehand") or Svartbrand ("Blacksword").
If no real life culture is discernible I generally just peek at the NPCs of same race/culture and make something up in the likeness of their names.

I usually call my character Kermi. If it's an online game and Kermi is already taken by someone else, I'll go with Kermitron instead. That name has only ever been contested once, when someone tried to retrieve the password for my gmail account, because he tried to register it then (obviously) had problems logging in.
