where my "stock" name is Raisin (don't ask).
"Tastes just like Raisins"?
Actually, it has fanfiction origins. A forum I used to visit (no longer existing on account of deletion) developed a fanfiction writing method where the writer would post the basic premise, and then other board members would fill out a criteria-based application to fill out the cast, although the actual writer would usually provide the central protagonist and/or antagonist.

In any case, it wasn't uncommon for at least one of my applications for these various fics to be (at least based on) "Kimarous". In one Dragonball fic, I figured that I'd go with a food pun much like a lot of DBZ characters, and a female one at that; thus, "Raisin" was born. In the next fic that was made, I proposed that the characters of Kimarous and Raisin be a couple in-story. This became a trend over time until I finally decided to make her "canon" as Kimarous's love interest.

Male Characters I either name after myself. Though some times I name them Xavier for no other reason then I love the name.

Females I name after my girlfriend damn near 100% of the time.

Depends. If its a Sci-Fi game Ill give my char a really cool and out there name. And if its a sword and sheilds type deal I will use all my nerd power to create a name the J.R.R Tolken would be proud to use.

Ex. Sci-Fi = Shindalla Echos
Ex. Fantasy = Mugatok Bloodpane

Always after myself. Always. There seems to be a large amount of the galaxy being saved by people named Joel.

I usually name my character in rpgs after fighting game characters (usually guilty gear) that reflect the class well. I.e. my rogue in wow was called Chippzanuff (super fast ninja from ggxx) or my warlock Arakune (blob that cursed opponents)
Sometimes I'll use Elias after Dafoe's character from "Platoon" both cause i like that character and though that name was awesome (like, i might name my first kid Elias).

Usually mine for male names...or some rendition. Sammerick or something in the case of Dragon Age. But my newest is an inside joke between me and my girl. I call myself Tarnak (defender of earth). (It's funnier with a zinc oxide face mask when you are ill :p)

Male: Bob, Jack, Isaac, Oleg, Matt, Rasz (which is to say, my nickname), Gordan, Darth BadAss, and HeyPeasantWhichRoadGoesToBuda (in Hungarian, of course- it's from a poem)

Female: some general names like Ashley. Not very creative, I know.

I remember making this very thread about 2-3 months ago. Ahh, memories.

OT: I usually call my (male) character Kanze. It's the product of me trying to spell "Knave" at 12 at night. I don't play as females very often, but when I do I just think of something random.

Depends on Genre and type of character I'm playing but mostly:

First names - Male:
Tanis - Fantasy game melee based classes - After Tanis Half-Elven from the Dragonlance books
Sefth/Sefthuko - Fantasy magic user usual evil or self centered - Named after a wavy key pattern.
Aaron - Modern/Futuristic/Sci-Fi Good characters - My name.
Brok3n Halo - Games where a call-sign makes more sense, non-fantasy online games, and not really good characters

First Names - Female(not named after anyone, just liked them):
Ren/Wren - Fantasy good/neutral character
Sam - SciFi/futuristic Good Character
Ash - Fantasy/Sci-fi Evil/selfish Character though occasionally can be good too

Last names:
Uko - When a more foreign sounding name sounds right
Drivencast - magic users usually matched with Sefth or Sefthuko
or something random from whatever show I happen to like at the time

John, Joseph, Jacob, or Jack, Is usually what I pick for males. Unless it's a fantasy RPG, and then it's usually something more appropriate.

For males- it can either be Zacharai(partially based off my name) or Daken.
For Females it's usually Shera, or Kaileen.

Usually random names that I think will fit the character, however my Oblivion names are "dietsunkist" and "Diet Coke". Obvious, right?

One time, when I was bored, I started up a new game of FFVII, and thought I'd screw around:
Cloud: Bad Ass
Barrett: Whoop Ass
Tifa: Kick Ass
Aerith: Sweet Ass
Cait Sith: Fat Ass
Cid: Hard Ass
I don't remember what I named Red XIII, and I never had Vincent or Yuffie join up, so I never thought up any names for them.
More recently, on FFVIII, I gave Squall my name because I almost look like him, and though I'll deny it endlessly, I'm probably just as big a loser as he. I gave Rinoa the name Sarah because that's my favorite name for a woman (what can I say, I loved Labyrinth as a kid... and Jennifer Connelly), though I'd rather have given that name to Quistis.
... yeah, I'm a sad and lonely man.

For other games, it really just depends on my mood, though somehow I've never felt right re-naming Link in any of the Zelda games. I'm not even a huge Zelda fan, but I have this huge hang-up about it that I can't explain.

I'm probably one of the nihilistic ones. Although I do name some characters based on my mood. When I feel like pissing about I use "Gary" just because I've always wanted a pet with that name. Don't judge me :p

Other times it's based on something I'm currently into, reading or have recently viewed on the Idiot Box.

Guys usually get named something mundane like "Jim" or "Chuck" because I enjoy hearing the epic tale of some schmuck named Jim.

Girls I generally name "Delilah" because I just happen to like the name, even if it does sort of imply that she's a treacherous shrew.

Depends on the setting, I went through a Shakespeare phase a few years ago (Iago, Othello, Tybalt etc), but generally it's random. I just go with a name that fits, in Dragon Age I called my character Nathan as I based him physically off the marvel character Cable. My Malkavian in VTMB I called "the March Hare" after Alice in wonderland.
